Pirates beat Troy by 17
The Prairie Pirates avenged an earlier loss and defeated Troy 72-55 Friday, Jan. 18 at Cottonwood to remain atop the standings in the league.Rhett Schlader goes for 2 against Troy.
The Pirates are now 6-2 in league play. They and Kamiah are the only teams with just 2 losses in a tightly contested 1-A Division 1 portion of the White Pine League.
The game was close throughout the first half with the lead changing hands a couple times in the first quarter until Prairie put together an 8-0 run to end the quarter and take a 17-11 lead.
Marcus Higgins had 4 points in that run while Lucas Arnzen and Seth Chaffee each scored 2.
Troy came back strong in the second quarter as Prairie sent Brooks Malm to the free throw line for 10 attempts. He made 9 of those and added 2 baskets in the quarter as Troy was able to take a 21-22 lead with 3:24 left.
Prairie countered with Rhett Schlader who went 8 for 8 from the line in the quarter and added a basket for 10 of Prairie’s 14 points. Dylon Bruegeman added a 3-pointer while Arnzen scored the remaining point.
Prairie managed to lead 31-28 at the half despite having Higgins and Jake Bruner sitting out much of the quarter in foul trouble.
The Pirates came out strong in the third quarter with a 10-0 run with Bruner scoring 6 of those 10 points.
For the rest of the quarter Arnzen took over the scoring load as he hit 7 of 8 shots in the quarter for 14 of Prairie’s 24 points.
Prairie took a 55-45 lead into the fourth quarter. 
Early in the fourth Malm tried to carry the Trojans back into the game as he stole the ball on 3 consecutive Prairie possessions and scored 6 points to cut the lead down to 57-53. At that point Malm was obviously gasping for air and Prairie responded with a 15-0 run to put the game away. 9 of those 15 points were at the free throw line as Prairie went 9 for 10 at the line in the quarter. Chaffee and Bruner were each 4 for 4.
Arnzen led a balanced scoring attack with 17 points with Schlader scoring 16, Bruner 14 and Higgins and Chaffee 11 each. Bruegeman was the only other Pirates to score with 3.
Prairie held a 35-24 rebounding advantage with Arnzen grabbing 12 rebounds and Bruner 9. 
Schlader had 2 steals and 3 assists while Bruner and Higgins had 4 assists each. 
Prairie was 25 for 47 from the field, 53%, and 20 for 30 at the line, 67%. Troy was 17 for 49 from the field, 35%, and 19 for 23 at the line, 83%.
There was a technical foul on Troy in the game due to a player wearing a different jersey number than what was put into the official book.
With the win Prairie is 6-2 in league and 10-4 overall.
The JV game was shortened to just 2 quarters due to Troy missing several players with the flu. Prairie wound up winning 28-15.
Troy scored first in the game but Prairie then reeled of 16 straight points to take control.
Calvin Hinkelman and Isaiah Shears scored 6 each in the quarter while Tanner Ross added 5 as Prairie took an 18-5 lead into the second quarter.
Each team scored 10 points in the second quarter with Justin Schumacher scoring 3 for Prairie while 3 others scored 2 each.
Hinkelman led the team in scoring with 8 points while Ross scored 7, Shears 6, Schumacher 3, Dylon Brugeman 2 and Bryson Higgins 1.
Prairie had a 21-20 edge on the boards with Jared Higgins, Ross, Shears and Hinkelman each having 4 rebounds.
Shears had 5 steals while Ross had 4 and Jared Higgins had 2 assists.
Prairie was 10 for 34 from the field, 29%, and 8 for 23 at the line, 35%. Troy was 7 for 18 from the field, 39%, and 0 for 2 at the line.
