Pirates split final regular season games
The Prairie Pirates went 1-1 in their final 2 regular season games as a fourth quarter rally fell short at Kamiah, 53-58 Tuesday, Feb. 5 and then they won at Nezperce 65-52 in their regular season finale.
Vs. Kamiah
Prairie went to Kamiah with a chance to be the #2 seed into the district tournament with a win but fell behind by as many as 18 points before a furious rally closed the game to 4 before the lost by 5.Marcus Higgins drives into the lane for a basket at Kamiah.Prairie opened the game in their favored man-to-man defense and Kamiah jumped all over them to take a 5-16 lead and led 9-19 by the end of the first quarter. Much of the damage was done by Kamiah’s two biggest players, 6’9” Matt Munch who had 8 and 6’4” Eric Hill who had 6. Jake Bruner led Prairie with 5 in the quarter but came out in the second quarter with an injury to the collarbone he broke in the final regular season football game at Potlatch.
Marcus Higgins supplied most of the offense for Prairie in the second quarter with 9 points including all 3 free throws when he was fouled on a 3-point attempt.
Munch added another 6 and Tyler Williamson scored 7 for Kamiah though as they led by as many as 17 at 18-35 and 20-37 before Higgins’s free throws closed out the half and cut the lead to 23-37.
In the third quarter Kamiah out scored Prairie 2-6 to open their biggest lead at 25-43.
Prairie cut the lead back to 11 at 33-44 but trailed 33-48 entering the fourth quarter.
Prairie had switched to a zone defense in the second half and it slowed Kamiah down. In the fourth quarter they stepped up the intensity of their full-court pressure and forced several turnovers as they opened the quarter with a 12-2 run that cut the lead to 45-50.
At the tail end of that run they lost Rhett Schlader to fouls so now they were down 2 starters for the final 5 minutes. That seemed to slow down the rally and Kamiah was able to put some points on the board again and pushed the lead back to 8 at 47-55 with 1:14 left.
A 3-pointer by Higgins and a free throw by Lucas Arnzen cut the lead to 51-55 with 46 seconds left but Prairie couldn’t get any closer.
Higgins wound up with 22 points to lead Prairie in scoring with Schlader scoring 10. Arnzen and Tyler Hankerson scored 7 each  while Bruner scored 5 and Seth Chaffee scored 2.
Kamiah dominated the boards 27-43. Arnzen led the Pirates with 8 rebounds.
Schlader had 6 steals while Arnzen had 4 assists and Higgins had 3.
Prairie was 23 for 59 from the field, 39%, and 4 for 6 at the line, 67%. Kamiah was 20 for 48 from the field, 42%, and 18 for 31 at the line, 58%.
The JV game was close for 3 quarters but Prairie pulled away in the fourth for a 46-32 win.
Prairie trailed 10-11 after the first quarter despite 9 points from Isaiah Shears.
A putback with 6 seconds left in the half fame Prairie a 20-18 lead that they never relinquished.
Calvin Hinkelman scored 7 of Prairie’s 9 third quarter points as they built a 29-22 lead only to see Kamiah rally to within 2 at 29-27 at the end of the quarter.
A 14-2 run to start the fourth quarter finally put the game in Prairie’s control.
Hinkelman scored 13 to lead the scoring with Shears scoring 12. Tanner Ross scored 9 with Dylan Bruegeman scoring 6, Appy Enriquez 4 and Bryson Higgins 2.
Prairie had a 43-40 rebounding edge. Ross had 15 rebounds to lead Prairie.
Hinkelman had 4 steals and Bryson Higgins had 3 assists.
The JV’s were 19 for 55 from the field, 35%, and 5 for 11 at the line 45%. Kamiah was 12 for 51 from the field, 24%, and 8 for 15 from the line, 53%.
