“Always has a smile and a kind word for everyone and willing to help others,” commented the co-workers of Tom Schumacher who was named as the March Employee of the Month for St. Mary’s Hospital.
Schumacher began working for St. Mary’s in January of 1995. Prior to that he worked for twenty years at the Grangeville sawmill. “I worked at the sawmill until it shut down and I was fortunate that a position in the maintenance department at the hospital came open and equally as fortunate that I was given the opportunity to fill that position,” comment Schumacher. “The hospital is like a second family to me.”
Whether it is winter, spring, summer or fall you will see Tom outside working on the grounds of either the hospital or one of the outlying clinics. His responsibilities include; snow removal, mowing lawns, trimming trees, spraying, fertilizing, etc. He also has many duties indoors; plumbing, waxing floors, painting and general maintenance. “I guess I do little bit of everything,” said Schumacher. “I’m what they call a Jack of all Trades and I learned a lot of my skills on the job here at St. Mary’s.”
“I have pride in my work and I want anyone that comes to the hospital to leave with a good feeling and impression,” Schumacher said. “I enjoy helping people; co-workers, patients or guests. I feel if you can make a difference you should.”
Not only does Tom do a lot of yard work as part of his job, he also does it has a hobby; along with landscaping, wood working and remodeling.
Tom and his wife Cindy, a first grade teacher at Prairie Elementary, make their home in the country between Cottonwood and Greencreek. They have two children, Kari who is a 7th grade science teacher in Buhl, Idaho and Joe who is a student at LCSC majoring in criminal justice.
