Pirates finish season with 2 wins
The Prairie Pirates bounced back from their only loss of the season with a 55-18 win at Clearwater Valley Tuesday, Feb. 11, and then trounced Kamiah on Senior Night Friday, Feb. 14 at Cottonwood 80-32.

Prairie came out with full-court pressure and generated much of their offense out of turnovers as they jumped out to a 10-0 lead with Lucas Arnzen scoring 6 of those points.
After C.V. made it 12-4, Prairie ended the first quarter with another 10-0 run to make it 22-4 at the break. Rhett Schlader scored 6 of those 10 points after a rough start shooting the ball.
In the second quarter the offense nearly disappeared. Tyler Hankerson scored a putback and a perimeter shot to put Prairie up 26-4 with 6 minutes left in the half. Prairie scored only 1 more point before half, a free throw by Jared Higgins with 53 seconds left. The defense kept them in control though as C.V. was unable to capitalize, scoring only 4 points in the quarter to trail 27-8 at the half.
In the third quarter C.V. got within 18 at 30-12 but a basket by Arnzen started a 17-2 run to end the quarter. In all Arnzen scored 7 of those 17 with Schlader scoring 6 as Prairie took a 47-14 lead into the final frame, initiating the running clock mercy rule.
Arnzen and Schlader wound up with 15 points each in the game with Tanner Ross scoring 9, Jake Bruner 6 and Higgins and Hankerson 5 each.
Prairie had a 30-28 rebounding edge with Arnzen grabbing 9 to lead the team. 
Higgins had 5 steals and 5 assists while Schlader had 4 steals and Bruner had 3 assists. The defense for 29 turnovers from the Rams while Prairie committed just 10 turnovers.
Prairie was 22 for 60 from the field, 37%, and 9 for 12 at the line, 75%. C.V. was 8 for 23 from the field, 35%,  and 2 for 10 at the line, 20%.
Prairie also won the JV game 49-39.
The Pirates fell behind 0-9 to start the game but rallied with a 10-0 run to finish the first quarter up 10-9. John Mager scored 4 and Devin Bruegeman hit a 3-pointer.
After Prairie took a 14-9 lead early in the second period, making it a 14-0 run overall, C.V. rallied to tie the game at 14. Prairie then went on a 13-2 run to take a 27-16 lead near the end of the half with Mager scoring 7 and Brandon Higgins 4.
Prairie led 27-18 at the half. C.V. got within 8 by the end of the third quarter and pulled within 4 at 36-32 midway through the fourth.
Prairie responded with an 8-0 run to put them back in control and they held on to win by 10.
Mager had 19 points to lead the JV’s in scoring with Calvin Hinkelman adding 10 points. Higgins scored 7 with Bruegeman scoring 5 and Isaiah Shears, Terran Peery, Brandon Anderson and Daniel Mager scored 2 each.
Prairie was 19 for 59 from the field, 32%, and 10 for 21 at the line, 48%, while C.V. was 16 for 38 from the field, 42%, and 7 for 18 at the line, 39%.

It was a memorable Senior Night for Jared Higgins, Tyler Hankerson and Dylon Bruegeman as they combined for 38 points on 17 for 19 shooting in a rout of Kamiah.
Higgins was a perfect 6 for 6 with three 3-pointers for 15 points while Hankerson was 6 for 7 for 12 points and Bruegeman was 5 for 6 with a 3-pointer for 11 points.

Prairie was 12 for 18 from the field in the first quarter as they took a 25-6 lead into the second quarter.
A 12-0 run to start the second quarter with the usual 5 starters pushed the lead to 37-6. It was 43-14 at the half.
The Pirates had runs of 4 and 7 points in the third quarter with Higgins hitting a pair of 3’s while Hankerson was 2 for 2 for 4 points as the Pirates took a 65-28 lead into the fourth quarter.
The onslaught continued in the fourth quarter as Prairie held Kamiah to just 4 points while scoring 15, including the final 8 of the game. Bruegeman played much of the fourth quarter and was 3 for 3 to join his fellow seniors in double figures. With about 4 minutes to go coach Teel Bruner put Hankerson and Higgins back in with Bruegeman so that he could sub them all out together a minute later to an ovation from the crowd.
Joining the 3 seniors in double figures was junior Bryson Higgins with 10 points as he was 4 for 6 with a pair of 3 pointers.
Arnzen and Ross scored 8 points each while Schlader scored 7, Isaiah Shears 5 and Bruner 4.
Prairie dominated on the boards 35-18 with Ross grabbing 7 to lead the team.
Jared Higgins had 3 steals and 4 assists.
Prairie was 34 for 54 from the field, 63%, and 5 for 12 at the line, 42%. Kamiah was 11 for 34 from the field, 32%, and 9 for 20 at the line, 45%.
Prairie finished their season at 19-1 overall and 12-0 in league play. Their district tournament opener won’t be until 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24.
The JV team also finished the season with a big win as they routed Kamiah 55-11.
Kamiah actually scored first in the game but that was the only time they held the lead as Prairie reeled off 10 straight points, 4 each by John Mager and Hinkelman. Prairie led 12-5 at the quarter break.
Neither team scored much in the second period as Prairie led 17-8 at the half with Shears scoring all 5 of Prairie’s second quarter points.
Prairie dialed it up in the third quarter scoring 24 straight to open the quarter as they built a 45-9 lead by the end of the period. Shears and Hinkelman each had 8 points in the quarter.
Kamiah scored the first two points of the fourth quarter on a pair of free throws but Prairie scored the final 10 points of the game.
Shears wound up leading the scoring with 13 points while Hinkelman scored 12. John Mager and Luke Wemhoff scored 6 each with Peery, Mason Dalgliesh and Ricardo Dominquez scoring 4 each, Daniel Mager 3 and Devin Bruegeman and Ryan Glimp 2 each.
The JV’s had a 39-26 rebounding edge led by John Mager with 7 and Dominquez with 5.
Hinkelman and Perry had 4 steals each while Higgins had 4 assists.

Pirates district opener is Monday , Feb. 24 at 6 p.m.
The Boys District Tournaments started earlier this week but Prairie as the #1 seed has a bye into the semifinals.
Prairie, as the #1 seed, won’t play until Monday, Feb. 24 when they face Genesee which defeated C.V. Tuesday, Feb. 18 in a loser-out game. They will kick off action that evening at 6 p.m. at the Activity Center at LCSC in Lewiston. Following their game Lapwai will face Troy which beat Kamiah on Tuesday. Kamiah had beaten Potlatch in Monday’s loser-out game.
Next Monday’s winners will both qualify for State and advance to the championship game Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. The losers will play at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27 with the winner of that game playing at St. Maries Saturday, March 1 at 6 p.m. against the District 1 champion for a state berth.
