Pirates clinch state berth
The Prairie Pirates clinched a berth in next week’s State Tournament with a surprisingly easy 60-22 win over Genesee Monday, Feb. 24 at the LCSC Activity Center in Lewiston.Rhett Schlader, Lucas Arnzen and Tyler Hankerson were part of the tough defense Prairie played against Genesee Monday as they held the Bulldogs to just 22 points, only 5 in the first half.
Prairie had beaten Genesee twice during the season but both of those games were a lot more competitive than this one. Prairie took 6 seconds to score as Jake Bruner grabbed Tanner Ross’ opening tap and took a couple of dribbles and scored a lay-up.
A minute later Rhett Schlader scored a pair of free throws. Lucas Arnzen, Jared Higgins and Ross each followed with a basket as Prairie made their first 4 shots from the field and took a 10-0 lead with 5:07 left in the first quarter.
Ross added two more baskets before the quarter was over as Prairie took a 14-0 lead, limiting Genesee to just 7 shots and forcing 9 turnovers with their press.
Higgins scored to open the second quarter and give Prairie a 16-0 lead before Genesee finally broke through with a 3-pointer by Reece Wayt.
To that point Reggie Tilleman, who had scored 23 and 27 during the season against Prairie, had yet to even attempt a shot.
After Genesee scored Prairie went on a 10-0 run with Bruner scoring 6 of those as they pushed the lead to 26-3. It was 30-5 at the half as Genesee was 2 for 17 from the field.
Reggie Tilleman finally scored to open the second half, with a free throw, his only point of the game. He wound up leaving the floor midway through the third quarter and did not return.
Genesee finally hit double figures with 4:07 left in the third quarter only to see Prairie score the next 15 straight points for a 51-10 lead.
Prairie’s biggest lead came midway through the fourth quarter when they went up 55-11 on a basket by Bryson Higgins.
Four of the five starters wound up in double figures for Prairie with Schlader and Jared Higgins scoring 11 each while Bruner and Ross scored 10 each. Arnzen scored 7, Tyler Hankerson 6 and Bryson Higgins 5.
Prairie dominated on the boards 37-23 with Bruner grabbing 12 to lead the team.
Jared Higgins had 4 assists and 3 steal while Arnzen also had 3 steals and Schlader added 3 assists. 7 different players had at least 1 assist.
Prairie was 27 for 51 from the field, 53%, and 3 for 6 at the line, 50%. Genesee was 6 for 37 from the field, 16%, and 5 for 11 at the line, 45%.
We have never seen a Genesee team get dominated like this and we would imagine it is the first time they have ever been shut out in the opening quarter of a game. After 3 quarters Genesee had nobody with more than 3 points.
Prairie now plays Lapwai Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. to decide the District title. Both teams have already qualified for State. Troy and Genesee play Thursday at 7 p.m. for third place and the chance to advance to state in a play-in game at St. Maries Saturday, March 1.
