Pirates win District Title
The Prairie Pirates continued an undefeated march through White Pine League opponents with a 62-49 win over Lapwai in the District Championship game Wednesday, Feb. 26 at the LCSC Activity Center in Lewiston.Rhett Schlader goes for a shot in the District Championship game against Lapwai. Lapwai was the one to get off to a fast start as they opened up leads of 3-10 and 5-12 in the first quarter. 
Prairie then put together a 6-0 to pull within 1. Jake Bruner started things with a lay-up on a feed from Lucas Arnzen. Arnzen then scored on a putback and a steal by Rhett Schlader led to another Bruner lay-up.
Lapwai came back to take a 13-16 lead at the quarter break.
Schlader, who was 0 for 4 in the first quarter, quickly got into the scoring column in the second with a pair of baskets that gave Prairie their first lead at 17-16.
Lapwai took the lead back with a basket but a free throw by Schlader tied it and a lay-up by Tanner Ross put Prairie back on top.
Lapwai tied it at 20 but Prairie then put together an 8-0 run and never trailed again. Schlader started the run with a 5 foot leaner and Arnzen followed with a pair of free throws. Bruner then forced a bad pass on a trap near the midcourt sideline and Jared Higgins picked it off and went the distance for a lay-up. Arnzen added a basket on a feed from Schlader to make it 28-20.
Lapwai managed to get back within 5 but 2 baskets by Ross and another basket by Schlader helped Prairie take a 34-27 lead at the half.
A 6-0 run to start the second half put Prairie in control of the game. A basket by Arnzen and 2 putbacks by Ross put Prairie up 40-27.
A 5-0 run later in the quarter on a lay-up by Higgins out of the flex offense and a basket and then a free throw by Bruner put Prairie up 47-32. They led 49-34 after 3 quarters.
Lapwai never got any closer than 10 points in the fourth quarter as Prairie hit 11 of 16 free throws to keep the Wildcats at bay. Ross was 5 for 5 at the line in the fourth quarter.
Ross wound up as the leading scorer with 19 points with Schlader and Arnzen scoring 13 each. Bruner made it 4 players in double figures with 11 points and Higgins added 6.
Prairie dominated the boards 45-26 with all three post players having double-doubles. Ross had 12 rebounds while Arnzen and Bruner had 10 each.
Schlader had 4 steals and Bruner had 3 while Higgins and Schlader had 4 assists each and Arnzen had 3. 
Prairie was 23 for 53 from the field, 43%, and 16 for 28 at the line, 57%. Lapwai was 22 for 50 from the field, 44%, and 2 for 10 at the line, 20%.
With the win Prairie takes a 21-1 record into the state tournament where they will play Glenns Ferry at 1:15 p.m. MST Thursday, March 6 at Vallivue High School in Caldwell, the same place they played the previous 3 trips to state. Lapwai takes on defending state champion Butte County at 6:15 p.m. MST. Glenns Ferry gave Butte County their only loss this season.

Bruner named White Pine Leage D1 coach of the year
Prairie’s Teel Bruner has been named the White Pine League Division 1 coach of the year.
Prairie’s Jake Bruner and Rhett Schlader were named to the All-WPL Division 1 first team while Lucas Arnzen was named to the second team. Genesee’s Reggie Tilleman was named the player of the year.
