Pirates win opener
In their first game since May of 2011 the Prairie baseball team got a strong pitching performance from Clark Bruno and beat Clearwater Valley 11-1 at Kooskia Monday, March 17.Clark Bruno delivers a pitch as third baseman Calvin Hinkelman gets ready for a possible play.
Bruno, who played with Kamiah the past two years, gave up just 3 hits and 1 unearned run in 6 innings. He walked just 1 and struck out 6.
Prairie scored their first run without benefit of a hit. Devin Bruegeman, who also played with Kamiah last year, was hit by a pitch with 1 out in the first inning. He wound up scoring when Calvin Hinkelman’s 2-out fly ball to left was dropped for an error.
Prairie added another run in the third when John Mager was walked to lead off the inning. He went to third on Bruegeman’s single to right and scored on Bruno’s sacrifice fly to right.
In the fourth inning Brandon Anderson beat out an infield hit to lead of the inning. He moved up to second and third on pitches that got past the catcher. He then scored when Daniel Mager’s ground ball to second went through the wickets of the second baseman for an error.
In the fifth inning Hinkelman had a 1-out single and Casey Danly followed with a solid double to left. Anderson then reached on an error at third but the runners were unable to advance. Terran Peery then hit a comebacker to the pitcher who got the force at home on Hinkelman but Danly wound up scoring when the catcher’s throw to first to try and complete a double play went into right field.
In the sixth John Mager led off the inning by reaching on a dropped third strike. He scored on Bruno’s 2-out double to left.
C.V. finally cracked the scoring column against Bruno in the bottom of the sixth. A couple of errors led to the run as C.V.’s leadoff man reached on a throwing error, moved to second on an infield hit, stole third and then scored when the throw to try and catch him stealing got away.
In the top of the seventh Prairie finally was able to plate more than 1 run.
Jake Bruner pinch hit for Danly and walked. Anderson reached on an error with Bruner going to third. Anderson then stole second. C.V. changed pitchers and the new pitcher promptly walked Peery. Bruner and Anderson each wound up scoring on wild pitches. After a pair of strikeouts, Rhett Schlader walked. Bruegeman then reached on a fielder’s choice with Peery scoring. Bruno beat out an infield single to load the bases and Hinkelman singled to center to score Schlader and Bruegeman. Bruno scored on another wild pitch to make it 11-1.
Bruegeman then pitched the bottom of the seventh. He struck out the first two hitters, gave up an infield single, and then got the final out on a grounder to second.
Prairie had 8 hits with Bruno collecting a double and single and 2 RBI. Hinkelman had 2 singles and 2 RBI. Danly had a double. Bruegeman had a single and an RBI. Anderson and John Mager each had a single and Daniel Mager had an RBI.
Prairie is now 1-0 in both league and overall.
