Pirates trail in suspended game
The first game of a scheduled league doubleheader with Troy was suspended in the bottom of the 7th inning due to rain with Prairie trailing 13-16 Friday, March 28 at Clearwater Park in Lewiston.Tyler Hankerson pitched 4 innings of no-hit ball against Troy before tiring in the 5th.
The second game and a league doubleheader scheduled for Saturday against Potlatch at Cottonwood were all postponed due to rain.
In the suspended game it should never have gotten to the bottom of the seventh as Prairie took a 13-7 lead into the top of the inning. 3 walks, 7 hits, a hit batter and a pitching change later Prairie was on the short end of a 13-16 score and Troy had the bases loaded when Prairie final got the third out.
The game started well for the Pirates as Tyler Hankerson pitched 4 innings of no-hit ball before tiring in the 5th. He sailed through the first two inning then ran into some trouble in the third as 2 errors and a walk led to 2 runs. He struck out the side in the fourth but lost control of the strike zone in the fifth, walking the first 3 batters before giving way to John Mager.
It didn’t start well for Mager as the first batter he faced laid down a bunt up the third base line. Mager couldn’t find the handle on the ball and the batter reached and the bases were loaded. A single brought home another run as did a wild pitch and then an error before Mager got out of the inning.
Prairie meanwhile had built an early lead with 2 runs in the first. Rhett Schlader started things off by beating out a bunt single. Schlader stole second and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Devin Bruegeman. Clark Bruno walked and stole second. Schlader scored on Calvin Hinkelman’s groundout and Bruno came home on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
Daniel Mager and Hankerson started off the second with consecutive singles. Brandon Anderson, Jake Bruner and Schlader all walked as a pair of runs scored. Troy then changed pitchers and Bruegeman greeted the new pitcher with a looper over third that scored another run. Bruno walked to force home a run and Hinkelman then forced Bruno with a run scoring. Another run scored on the errant throw to first to try and complete a double play. That made it 8-0 in Prairie’s favor.
Prairie added 2 more in the bottom of the 4th to make it a 10-2 lead as Bruno singled and Hinkelman doubled to put runners on second and third. With Daniel Mager at the plate, Bruno scored on a wild pitch and Mager reached on an error with Hinkelman scoring.
After the tough fifth inning Prairie’s lead was cut to 10-7.
In the bottom of the fifth Prairie pushed the lead back to 5 with a pair of runs. Anderson and Bruner both walked. A deep fly to right by Schlader advanced both runners. Two wild pitches during Bruegeman’s at-bat allowed Anderson and Bruner to scored to make it 12-7.
John Mager got through the 6th without incident and Prairie tacked on another run in the bottom of the 6th thanks to a couple of Troy errors.
With a 13-7 lead it looked like Prairie would pick up a win. Mager got an out to start the 7th then things fell apart. A bloop single over shortstop, a walk, a single to left and a walk led to Bruno replacing Mager on the mound.
Bruno struck out the first batter he faced then basically pitched batting practice with a few badly timed wild pitches thrown in. Troy got a single, hit batter, single, single, triple, single, error and walk out of the next 8 batters before Bruno finally nailed down the final out with a strikeout.
In the bottom of the seventh Bruegeman grounded out but Bruno singled to left. Hinkelman had a 3-0 count on him when the game was stopped. The game will be picked up at that point when it can be rescheduled, followed by the second game.
Prairie is now off for Spring Break with their next scheduled game set for Tuesday, April 8 at home against Kamiah.
Catcher Terran Peery catches a foul pop up against Troy.
Calvin Hinkelman dives back to first on a pickoff attempt.
Clark Bruno slides safely into third as the throw gets away from the Troy fielder.
