Hawaiian Luau to benefit Center for Discovery
The Center For Discovery would like to take this opportunity to invite the community to our First Annual Hawaiian Luau on Saturday, May 3 at the Cottonwood Community Hall.  Just to clarify this started out to be a progressive dinner, but after much consideration we have decided that we can not make that work at this time.
The Center For Discovery has played a very important role in the lives of many Cottonwood youth over the years.  Our doors were first opened in September of 2000.  At that time we received a very large federal grant.  With that we purchased a school bus that we used for our students to be delivered home.  We also helped pay for part of the remodel of the old Kindergarten building so we could move from the high school to the elementary school.  At that time we served kids Kindergarten through sixth grade.  We had that grant for our first three years of operation.  Then we received a smaller state grant that was for five years.  We continued to operate at Prairie Elementary School and provide a safe place for all kids Kindergarten through sixth grade students.  We helped get them get their homework done, and made sure that all their goals set up by their school day teachers were met.  We also helped them get too and from practices, took them on field trips, and provided them with outside time and enrichment activities.  With our second state grant we decided to offer after an school preschool program.  We worked and still do with our younger children to making sure that they are ready for Kindergarten.  This has and still does help out many of our local parents because a major daycare closed and we gave preschool kids a place to be all day.  This past year we received another five year grant through the state; however this grant was much smaller than years past.  We have done a very good job making sure that we have money in our account to cover our operating costs.  We continue to serve students preschool through sixth grade.  At this time we average about 25 younger kids and 22 older kids per day.  We have also taken under our wings the Kindness Rocks program along with Mrs. Colleen Sonnen, and we have brought the Missoula Children’s Theatre to Cottonwood the last couple of years.
All of these things are the reason for the Luau.  This will be a major fundraising event.  We would like to invite everyone to purchase Luau tickets for $25.00 per person, $45.00 per couple or $170.00 per table of eight.  Dinner will include roasted pig, twice baked potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower salad, caesar salad, rolls, and cheesecake.  We will be having a Chinese auction, along with a couple of silent auction items, as well as games that will be played through out the night.  Tickets must be purchased by April 25.  This can be done by calling The Center at 962-7080 or by calling Tara Rowland at 962-7071.
If you would like to make any kind of donation, whether it be for the auction or if just a monetary donation to help purchase necessary items please feel free to send it to Center For Discovery, PO Box 453, Cottonwood, ID 83522 or call Erin Shears at 208-816-0202 to arrange for pickup.
