win 4 of 5
The Prairie baseball team won 4 of 5 games played this past week, all of them league games. On Tuesday, April 15 they knocked off Clearwater Valley 18-5. On Friday, April 18 they split with Potlatch, losing the opener 6-14 then bouncing back for a 17-9 win. On Saturday, April 19, they swept a doubleheader at Timberline, winning 21-1 and 26-3. Another scheduled game, against Highland Thursday, April 17, was postponed due to rain. 
Prairie took a 2-0 lead in the first without benefit of a hit. Tyler Hankerson and Calvin Hinkelman both walked and thanks to wild pitches and errors, both came around to score. C.V. tied it in the second off of Prairie starter Devin Bruegeman with a 2-out double followed by a home run. Prairie bounced right back in the bottom of the second by plating 7 runs. Daniel Mager started the inning by reaching on an error. Casey Danly followed with a single to left. John Mager then knocked in both runners with a triple to deep center. Mager then scored on a wild pitch. Jake Bruner was hit by a pitch and Bruegeman blooped a single over third base. A fly ball to left by Tyler Hankerson moved both runners up then Hinkelman crushed a homer to left that scored 3 runs and made it 8-2. After a second out, Brandon Anderson walked and stole second. He scored on Daniel Mager’s single to right to make it 9-2. Prairie made it 11-2 with a pair of runs in the third inning. Bruegeman singled to left and went to second when the ball was misplayed by the left fielder. Hankerson hit a fly ball single to center with Bruegeman having to hold to make sure it wasn’t caught. Both runners moved up on stolen bases and scored on Terran Peery’s single to left. C.V. added 2 runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 11-4 but Prairie responded with another 7-spot in the bottom of the fourth. Danly singled with 1 out and John Mager followed with an RBI double to left. Bruner singled to right as Mager moved to third. Bruegeman reached on an error with Mager scoring. Hankerson reached on an error that saw Bruner score. An error on a pickoff play at third allowed Bruegeman to score. Hinkelman doubled in Hankerson and scored when Perry reached on an error. Anderson beat out an infield single and Rhett Schlader went in to run. He stole second and when the throw got away, Peery scored to make it 18-4. Bruegeman gave up 1 more run in the fifth on a couple of errors to make the final score 18-5. Bruegeman pitched all 5 innings allowing 5 runs on 6 hits with no walks and 7 strikeouts. Prairie had 13 hits with Hinkelman collecting a double and homer and 4 RBI. John Mager had a double and triple and 3 RBI. Bruegeman and Danly each had 2 singles. game while they came back with a 12-hit attack and took advantage of Potlatch’s
sloppy defensive play to win the second game.
In the opener Hankerson breezed through the first inning and Prairie had a chance to score in the bottom of the inning. Hankerson reached on an error and Clark Bruno followed with a single to left as Hankerson advanced to third. Hinkelman then hit a fly ball to center that should have scored a run but Hankerson left early and coach Kyle Westhoff had to have him get back to third. Potlatch took the lead in the second on a double, single and an error that led to 2 runs. The Loggers added to that in the third on 3 singles, 2 errors and a 3-run homer that gave them a 0-8 lead. Prairie got on the board in the bottom of the third with a 2-out rally. Bruno walked with 2 outs and scored on Hinkelman’s pop fly double to left. Hinkelman then scored on Peery’s single to center and Peery scored on Anderson’s double to left to cut the deficit to 3-8. Potlatch pushed the lead to 3-11 with 3 more runs in the fourth on a walk, hit batsmen and 2 singles. Prairie escaped further damage when Hankerson caught a line drive right back to him and doubled off the runner on first to end the inning. Prairie tried to get back into it with a run in the fourth as Bruegeman walked and later scored on Bruno’s double. Prairie added 2 more in the fifth as Perry led off with a single and went to third on an error by the left fielder. Anderson and Daniel Mager walked to load the bases. Peery wound up being forced at home but Bruegeman singled in 2 runs to cut the lead to 6-11. That was it for Prairie though as the Loggers added 2 in the sixth and 1 in the seventh. Hankerson pitched the whole game allowing 14 runs on 12 hits with 2 walks, 1 hit batsman and 4 strikeouts. 3 actual errors and several others plays that could have been made cost the Pirates. Prairie had 8 hits with Bruno collecting a double and single with an RBI. Peery had 2 singles and an RBI. Hinkelman and Anderson each had a double and an RBI. Bruegeman had a single and 2 RBI and Bruner had a single. Bruno started the second game and it looked like it might be more of the same as Potlatch scored 3 first inning runs on a single and a walk plus an error. Prairie came right back though with 5 runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Bruegeman reached on an error to start the game and Bruno singled him home. Hinkelman beat out an infield hit and Hankerson then doubled in Bruno. Hinkelman scored on the play after the ball got away from the catcher trying to catch Bruno at the plate. Hankerson went to third on the play. Daniel Mager walked and took second as the Loggers were worried about Hankerson at third. A balk then scored Hankerson and moved Mager third third. Mager wound up scoring on a wild pitch. Bruno got the side out in order in the second and Prairie added another 5 runs. Peery led off with a walk and Bruno hit a 2-run homer to left. Hankerson tripled and then scored on a wild pitch. Daniel Maer walked and Bruner was hit by a pitch. A couple of errors allowed 2 more runs to score and make it 10-3. In the third 2 hit batters both came around to score to cut the lead to 10-5. Prairie made it 13-5 with a 3-run third. Bruno led off with a triple to give him three-fourths of a cycle. He scored when the left fielder’s throw in got away from the cut-off man. Hankerson singled after an out to give him three-fourths of a cycle as well. He came in to score when Bruner reached on an error. Bruner scored on Anderson’s double to left. A single Potlatch run in the fourth was answered by 2 Prairie runs that could have been more but aggressive baserunner couple with great throws by Potlatch led to 2 outs at the plate which is why Prairie scored just 2 despite a single followed by 4 walks and a hit batsman. Potlatch got to Bruno for 3 in the fifth on 2 walks and 2 singles. An interference call on the batter on a steal attempt helped Prairie get out of the inning without further damage. Daniel Mager went to the mound for the final 2 innings and gave up 3 baserunners but no hits or runs. Prairie added 2 insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Bruno led off with his fourth hit but it wasn’t hit quite hard enough to give him the double he needed to complete a cycle. Bruno scored when Hankerson reached on an error as the pitcher threw the ball into right field on a comebacker. Hankerson wound up going all the way to third and scored on Danly’s pinch-hit ground out to second. Bruno gave up 9 runs on 5 hits in 5 innings with 3 walks and 3 hit batsmen with 4 strikeouts. Daniel Mager gave up no runs and no hits in 2 innings with 1 walk, 1 hit batsman and 1 strikeout. Prairie had 12 hits as Bruno had a homer, triple and 2 singles with 3 RBI. Hankerson had a triple, double and single and 1 RBI. Anderson had a double and single and 1 RBI. Hinkelman, Peery and Schlader each had a single. Bruno, Hankerson and Bruner each reached base 5 times. Bruner did it without benefit of a hit as he wound up 0 for 1 in the game. He reached on a walk and an error and was hit by pitch 3 times. By then they were down by 16 runs as Prairie scored 4 in the first, 9 in the second and 3 in the third. The Pirates added 5 more in the fourth. Prairie had 12 hits in the game with Bruno collecting a double and 2 singles and Daniel Mager 3 singles. Hankerson had a double and a single while Bruner had 2 singles and Danly a single. In the second game Daniel Mager got the call on the mound and gave up 2 runs in 3 innings. Bruner pitched the final 2 innings allowing 1 more run. Timberline managed just 3 hits against them. Prairie scored 5 in the first 2 in the second and 4 in the fourth for an 11-2 lead heading into the fifth. They erupted for 15 runs in the top of the fifth to give them plenty of margin to end the game after 5. Again Prairie pounded out 12 hits with Danly picking up 3 singles. Bruegeman, Daniel Mager and John Mager had 2 singles each. Anderson and Bruner had a double each while Peery and John Halligan each had a single.  Games this week rained out Prairie's baseball games this week at Kendrick, April 24 and at Troy April 25 have been postponed due to weather. The Troy games (finish of the suspended game plus second game) have been rescheduled for May 3 at 11 a.m. at Troy. No information on whether the Kendrick game will be made up. The Highland game that was postponed April 17 will be part of a doubleheader Monday, April 21 here in Cottonwood with the first game to start at 3:30 p.m. Late update, Friday, April 25--The doubleheader with Nezperce on May 1 has been cancelled. Late update, Monday, April 28--The doubleheader with Highland scheduled for April 28 has been moved to Friday, May 3 at 3 p.m. at Cottonwood.
