Logging camp tour planned
During the early years of the operation of Craig Mountain Lumber Company of Winchester logging was done on company owned rail roads.  As the rails were laid into the forest a camp would be set up to feed and house the track layers and loggers. After the timber was cut in that area the rails were taken up and the rails and camp were moved to the next site of operation.
Mike Dill, a board member of the Museum of Winchester History, will be guiding a tour of the logging camps south of Winchester on May 23 and June 14.  A bus with a loud speaker system will be used so Mike can narrate and answer questions about the history of the camps.
Mike has spent several years researching the locations of these camps, using old maps, old timers and newspaper stories. Mike, as well as his father and grandfather, lived south of Winchester in the Woodside area (5 miles south of Winchester). He heard stories and visited some of the sites when there were still railroad beds and water towers to be seen.
The tour will begin at the museum in Winchester, 417 McBeth, at 9:00 with enlarged maps showing the railroads laid out on tables in the dining area in the basement, then at 10:00 the bus will leave.  As the tour will last about 4 hours people should bring a lunch.  The bus will have a cooler available for drinks. The plan is to stop at Camp 8 to eat and stretch the legs. Other stops will be made as needed.
The cost will be $10 per person.  The bus will accommodate 30 people so reservations will need to be made in advance.  Reservations can be made by calling Janene Alley, 208-924-7920 or e-mailing janenedon@q.com.  Payment needs to be made prior to the bus tour. Checks should be made payable to the Museum of Winchester History and can be sent to 2191 Airport Road, Craigmont, ID 83523.
