The Prairie baseball team finished their regular season winning 3 of 4 games. On Friday, May 2 they swept Highland 23-4 and 11-0 at Cottonwood. On Saturday, May 3 they lost the completion of a suspended game 14-16 then won the second game 24-2 at Troy.
Vs. Highland
The opening game against Highland saw the Pirates pound out 20 hits as they scored in every inning of a 23-4 rout.Brandon Anderson managed to hang on to the ball despite stumbling backwards on this play against Highland.
Prairie jumped on Highland with 10 runs in the first inning as they sent 14 hitters to the plate.
Devin Bruegeman started it off with a walk. After he stole second Rhett Schlader pounded a double to the fence in right center to score him. Schlader scored on Calvin Hinkelman’s single to left. Hinkelman went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Terran Peery’s single to left. Brandon Anderson and Casey Danly walked to load the bases and at that point Highland changed pitchers. Tyler Hankerson grounded out to second with Peery scoring. Anderson stole home to make it 5-0. Jake Bruner walked and he and Danly executed a double steal. Bruegeman walked again to reload the bases and Schlader walked to score Danly. Clark Bruno singled to left to score 2 of the runners and Schlader scored when the ball got away from the left fielder. Bruno then scored when Hinkelman reached on an error to make it 10-0 before Tyler Hankerson even went to the mound.
Highland had 2 doubles in their half of the first to score a run with a perfect relay from left to third to home keeping a second run from scoring.
Prairie added another 7 runs in the second inning as they sent another 12 batters to the plate. Anderson, Hankerson, Bruner and Bruegeman each had singles and Schlader had a second double. Bruno had a sacrifice fly to center and Hinkelman Anderson and Danly each added run-scoring singles to make it 17-1.
In the third Bruner led off with a double and Bruegeman followed with a run scoring single. Schlader walked to force another pitching change. Bruno grounded out to second with Schlader being called out for interference on the play as he was going to second. Hinkelman then triple to left center to score Bruegeman to make it 19-1.
Highland got to Hankerson for single runs in the third, 4th and 5th innings but Prairie added 1 in the 4th and 3 more in 5th to win easily.
Hankerson pitched all 5 innings allowing 4 runs on 6 hits with 4 walks, 2 hit batters and 7 strikeouts.
As mentioned earlier Prairie had 20 hits with Hinkelman having a triple and 3 singles and 3 RBI. Schlader had 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Bruno had a double and single and 3 RBI. Anderson had 3 singles and an RBI. Bruner had a single and a double. Bruegeman had 2 singles and an RBI. Danly had 2 singles and 2 RBI. Peery had 2 singles and an RBI. Hankerson had a single and an RBI as every starter had at least 1 hit.
In the second game Daniel Mager pitched a 3-hit shutout as Prairie again won in 5 innings. Which was fortunate since they were running out of daylight due to the length of the first game.
Mager gave up a single and walk in the first inning with 1 out but a flyball and groundout got him out of the inning.
In the bottom of the first Bruegeman led off with a bloop single over second. He then stole second and third and scored on Schlader’s infield single. Schlader scored when Anderson reached on an error.
Prairie added 7 in the second as the first 6 batters all reached base. Danly and Daniel Mager singled. Peery went in to run for Mager and stole second and third and beat the throw to the plate as Bruner reached on a fielder’s choice. Bruegeman singled with the ball getting past the leftfielder to allow Bruner to score. Schlader singled in Bruegeman and Bruno followed with a 2-run homer over the right field fence. Anderson later singled and scored on Danly’s single to make it 9-0.
Prairie added 2 in the third to get the 10-run margin needed to end the game early. Schlader walked and Bruno singled. The executed a double steal and both scored on Anderson’s single to left.
Daniel Mager allowed just the 3 hits with 3 walks and 8 strikeouts including a string of 5 in a row over the second and third innings. In the fourth inning Highland got a leadoff single but Mager picked him off first. That helped keep the shutout going as the next batter doubled.
