The Backyard Naturalist Finds Bugs!
Bugs, bugs, and more bugs!  This was the focus for the second week of the Summer Reading Program.  On Thursday, June 26th, the Prairie Community Library was visited by approximately 25 children and 75 bugs (dead, alive, plastic, and paper)!  Children signed in and received a gummy worm if they brought with them their bookmark from last week or a bug!  New children registered and set their reading goals for the summer.
Meanwhile, the children checked out books and played “Don’t Wake the Bumblebee” and “The Spider Relay” until all were ready.  The younger attendees then painted the first coat of their soon to be pet ladybug rock while the older children examined the 75 bugs and wrote down as many as they could identify.
All the participants then went into the library where guest reader, Missy, shared the book “The Grouchy Ladybug” by Eric Carle.  Complete with her antennas, Missy kept the children engrossed in the story.  After the story ended, the children went back out into the adjoining room.  The little ones finished their ladybugs, learned more about insects, played games, listened to another story “The Pest Fest” and then heard from the older kids as they explained their own creations.  The older participants, examined the bugs and learned of their characteristics, then created their own “bugs” and shared them with the audience.
Finally, the program ended with souvenir bugs being distributed and all children being reminded to read, read, read for the next two weeks.  The summer program will skip next week, 4th of July week, and resume on Thursday, July 10th from 1:00-3:00.  Robots will be the focus for the next session. Hope to see you all there! Needed for this session are all sizes of boxes.  We thank anyone who can drop off a box(es) to the library before July 10th.
The summer reading program is a free program for all participants.  But we are grateful for any donations to help cover the cost.  You may leave your donation at the library in the Summer Reading jar or “Adopt a Book” purchased for the summer program.  Ask the librarian if you have any questions.  Thank you for your help.
