28 turn out for football
There are 28 players turned out for the Prairie High School football team.
With the so-called “skill” position players returning from the team that finished third in the state last season, big things are expected this season. With junior Jake Bruner returning at quarterback along with seniors Lucas Arnzen and Hunter McWilliams and sophomore Calvin Hinkelman at running back and seniors Rhett Schlader and Tanner Ross and junior Isaiah Shears at receiver Prairie could have a strong offense IF they get good play from the offensive line.
Prairie has some good size in the line with Philip Spencer, Bobby Hood and Highland transfer Hunter Hasselstrom but very much varsity experience as seniors dominated both the offensive and defensive lines last season.
Prairie should be well in the mix for a state berth in the expanded state playoffs this year and should compete for the White Pine League title. Last year’s league champion, Troy, returns their linemen but lost their quarterback and top running back to graduation. They’ll still be in the mix for the league title as will Genesee, the league’s third state participant last year.
Kamiah should be improved and would have made the state playoffs last year if this year’s set up was in place.
Lapwai, C.V. and Potlatch round out the league. Wallace was invited to join the league and earn their playoff spot but decided they rather stay an independent and take their playoff spot as the state’s only District 1 team in 1-A, Division 1.
This year an extra round of state playoffs were added with 16 teams making the state playoffs, 5 from Districts 1 and 2. We believe Wallace would come in as the #5 seed and play at the WPL champs.
The WPL 2nd place team would host the District 3 4th place team. The 3rd place WPL team would play at the District 3 2nd place team and the WPL 4th place team would play at the District 3 1st place team.
The higher seeded winners host the second round games on Nov. 7 with any northern higher seeded teams left likely playing in the Kibbie Dome. The semifinals will be Nov. 14 or 15 with the championship games on either Nov. 21 or 22.
With the added round of playoffs there will be only 8 regular season games.
Prairie’s roster this year includes 7 seniors: Lucas Arnzen, Mason Dalgliesh, John Mager, Rhett Schlader, Tanner Ross, Hunter McWilliams and Dally Ratcliff. There are 11 juniors: Isaiah Shears, Devin Bruegeman, Terran Peery, Jake Bruner, Calvin Hinkelman, Daniel Mager, Bobby Hood, Philip Spencer, Hunter Hasselstrom, Brandon Higgins and Justin Schumacher.
There are 6 sophomores: Tyson Schlader, Brandon Anderson, Raice Dalgliesh, Kory Bahlman, Evan Jost and Lucas Wemhoff.
Finally there are 4 freshmen: Dereck Arnzen, Hunter Chaffee, Jayce Huling and Nick Mager.
Prairie opens their season with a tough league matchup at Genesee Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m.
Their next two games are against last year’s 1-A, Div. 2 championship finalists. They are at Salmon River Friday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m., PDT and at Council Friday, Sept. 19, also at 6 p.m. PDT. Their first home game will be Friday, Sept. 26 against Clearwater Valley. This will also be the Homecoming game and a league game. All 4 of October’s games are league games, at Lapwai, Oct. 3; Troy here, Oct. 10; at Potlatch, Oct. 17 and Kamiah here Oct. 24.

The Prairie football team gets warmed up at the start of practice. They jump right into White Pine League action this Friday when they play their season opener at Genesee at 7 p.m.
