Pirates dominate at Genesee
The Prairie Pirates rolled up 520 yards of offense, 368 of it rushing, to win 60-20 at Genesee Friday, Sept. 5 in the Pirates’ season opener.
As assistant coach Teel Bruner noted, that score was almost identical to the Pirates district win over Genesee lLucas Arnzen stiffarms a Genesee defender on a running play. #23 is Calvin Hinkelman.ast February in basketball when they won 60-22. Of course for the Pirates a lot of the same players stood out in both games.
Genesee tried an onside kick with the opening kickoff but Hunter McWilliams was able to cover the ball at the Prairie 43. Prairie needed just 5 plays to cover the 57 yards for their first score. A 17 yard gain on a screen pass to the right to Rhett Schlader set the Pirates up at the Genesee 19. On the next play quarterback Jake Bruner stepped back as if to pass and when he saw the whole left side of the Genesee defense open up, he took off for the end zone covering the 19 yards untouched. Bruner passed to Schlader for the 2-pointer to make 8-0.
Genesee got a great kickoff return to set them up at the Prairie 28 with Lucas Arnzen making the touchdown saving tackle on Genesee’s Trent Souders after a 56 yard return.
Genesee proceeded to go backward with a bad snap to quarterback Beau Tilleman costing them 13 yards. Prairie took over at their own 38.
Prairie picked up a first down but then the drive stalled and they turned the ball back to Genesee at the Prairie 45.
The defense forced a 3 and out and Prairie took over at their own 29.
After a couple of missed passes Prairie went to the run with Arnzen going right for 7 yards and Calvin Hinkelman picking up the first down on a 5 yard gain up the middle.
Bruner then found Isaiah Shears wide open on the left side for a 43 yard gain to the Genesee 16.
A flare pass to the left to Schlader gained just 2 yards. On the next play Hinkelman went up the middle but fumbled the ball at about the 4 yard line. It rolled toward the end zone and Hinkelman wound up recovering the ball for a touchdown. Hinkelman then ran in the 2-pointer to make it 16-0.
Calvin Hinkelman leaps for the goal line coming down with the ball just across the stripe for a touchdown.Another 3 and out by the Genesee offense saw Prairie almost give it back on the punt return but Bruner wound up recovering the fumble at the Genesee 38.
Five plays later Bruner ran a keeper to the left, cut back to the middle and scored from 11 yards out. After a false start on the 2-point try, Bruner again kept the ball and scored to make it 24-0 with 1:22 left in the first quarter.
Prairie’s offense stalled in the second quarter. Although they picked up 5 first downs a sack on fourth down and a fumble kept them out of the end zone.
After the fumble Genesee finally picked up their initial first down when Souders gained 31 yards on a fake punt. He appeared to hurdle Mason Dalgliesh on the play, which is a penalty in high school football, but the referees did not see it that way. Genesee wound up getting as far as the Prairie 17 before turning the ball over on downs.
Prairie was unable to move the ball and punted it back to the Bulldogs who took over at the Prairie 46.
Genesee went to a hurry-up all pass offense and picked up gains of 13, 15 and 18 yards to score their first points of the game with just 12 seconds left in the half. Their 2-point try failed with Prairie holding a 24-6 lead at the half.
Dalgliesh tried to make it a bigger lead on the kickoff return, going 41 yards before being tackled as time ran off the clock.
Genesee received the second half kickoff and went 3 plays and out with Prairie taking over at their own 37 after the punt went out of bounds.
Prairie ran the ball 4 straight times with Arnzen gaining 8, McWilliams 30 and Arnzen 9 to take the ball to the Genesee 16. Hinkelman went up the middle for the final 16 yards and Arnzen added the 2-pointer to make it 32-6.
Genesee picked up a first down on their next possession but 3 straight incompletions turned the ball back to the Pirates at their 46.
A 10 yard run by Arnzen was followed by runs of 6 and 10 by Hinkelman. Prairie then went back to the pass and Shears somehow got wide open in the end zone for an easy 28 yard touchdown play. There wasn’t a defender within 15 yards of him. Arnzen again added the 2-pointer to make it 40-6.
Prairie tried a short kickoff to keep it away from Souders, who had burned them a couple of times. The upback for Genesee wound up fumbling the ball with Arnzen recovering at the Genesee 40.
Prairie moved the ball down to the 23 before turning it back to Genesee on a fumble. The Prairie defense gang-tackles Genesee quarterback Beau Tilleman. From left are Calvin Hinkelman, Terran Peery, Tanner Ross and Lucas Arnzen. We’re not sure who the player on the ground is.
Genesee was able to move the ball out to midfield where they faced a fourth down and 4. Tilleman got rushed and his pass attempt was intercepted by Bruner at the Prairie 22.
On the next play Arnzen took the ball and managed to turn the corner around left end and was off to the races. The state 400 meter dash champion wasn’t going to be run down from behind as he went 78 yards for the score. Hinkelman added the 2-pointer to make it 48-6 early in the fourth quarter.
An out of bounds kickoff saw Genesee take over at their 35. They got a couple of big running plays and then on fourth and 5 at the Prairie 23, Tilleman ran a read-option, putting the ball into his running back’s chest then pulling it back and taking off himself for the touchdown. Genesee added the 2-pointer to make it 48-14.
Genesee tried an onside kick but hit it too hard as the ball wound up going out of bounds before they could get to it. Prairie took over at their 48 and marched the ball downfield for another score.
A third and 15 was converted when Dalgliesh caught a screen pass to the right and took it 19 yards.
Bruner later converted a third and inches by going 2 yards on a sneak. McWilliams then took the ball and went over the left side for 11 yards and a touchdown. The 2-point try was stopped short leaving Prairie with a 54-14 lead.
Genesee added another score with Prairie putting in some subs in on defense. Tilleman ran another read option and went 55 yards for a score to make it 54-20.
With the second string offense in the game Prairie needed just 2 plays to score from their own 48 after another out of bounds onside kick attempt.
Backup quarterback Schlader completed a 6 yard pass to Devin Bruegeman then handed off to Dalgliesh who went over the right side and outran the defense for a 42 yard scoring play. The 2-point try again came up short as Prairie led 60-20.
Substitutes finished up the game on both sides of the ball as Prairie picked up a White Pine League win.
Prairie picked up their 368 yards rushing on 42 attempts, an average of  8.76 yards per carry. Arnzen had 163 yards on 10 carries to lead the way. Hinkelman added 82 yards on 10 carries with McWilliams gaining 54 on 9 carries, Dalgliesh 52 on 2 carries and Bruner 24 on 8 carries. Bruner’s total was brought down by 3 sacks for 25 yards worth of losses. He gained 49 yards on his 5 called running plays.
Bruner completed 11 of 21 passes for 146 yards with Schlader completing his only pass attempt for 6 yards.
Shears caught 4 for 79 yards, Schlader 3 for 52, Dalgliesh 1 for 19, Arnzen 1 for 8, Bruegeman 1 for 6, Tanner Ross 1 for 5 yards and McWilliams 1 for –7 yards.
Genesee had 245 total yards, 141 rushing on 36 attempts. Tilleman had 55 on 10 carries and Austen Jones 51 on 13 carries.
Tilleman completed 17 of 32 passes with 2 interceptions for 104 yards. Souders led the receivers with 5 catches for 47 yards.
Hinkelman led the defense with 11½ tackles followed by Arnzen with 9½ and half a sack. Shears had 7½ and the other half sack. Ross had 4 tackles, Dalgliesh 3, Dally Ratcliff and John Mager 2½ each, McWilliams 2 tackles plus an interception, Schlader and Brandon Anderson 2 each, Bruner 1 tackle plus an interception, Philip Spencer, Terran Peery and Bruegeman 1 each and Justin Schumacher had half a tackle.
With the win Prairie is 1-0 on the season and in league play. This week they have a non-league game at Salmon River who has lost their first two games this season after back to back state championships. The game will start at 7 p.m. Mountain Time, 6 p.m. Pacific Time.
By the way, if you were wondering about some of the scores, like Timberline 62-Lewis County 0, they changed the 45-point run this year. Instead of ending the game at that point it just goes to a running clock. Which means no more games ending at halftime or in the third quarter.
