School year off to a good start
By Rene’ Forsmann
Cottonwood School District #242 Superintendent
Our K-12 enrollment is holding steady with 390 students enrolled.  Last year at this time we had a count of 392 students. Our elementary school enrollment is up from last year with 209 K-6 as compared to 198 the prior year.  We currently have 41 students open enrolled at both our elementary and jr/sr high schools.
Seven classrooms in our elementary were remodeled this summer.  We added cabinets, coat cubbies and storage, which made a huge improvement to the rooms.  The science room lab at the high school was also renovated by adding cupboards and lab tables.  Painting was done in both buildings in the classrooms, hallways and bathrooms.
It has been wonderful seeing students up and down the hallways ready and willing to learn.
Our high school volleyball and footballs teams are off to a great start and our junior high football and girl’s basketball teams start their seasons this week.
Our high school students are preparing to sign up for dual credit course work through LCSC.    Students and parents are also working with our school counselor on advanced opportunities and options for online course work offered through the IDLA program.
We take this opportunity to welcome a new art teacher, Mr. Shane Chapman.  Shane spent the last 8 years in the Garden City Public Schools in Garden City, Kansas.  Shane and his wife, Laurie, have two children, Sierra 7th grade and Reed 5th grade.  Take time to admire the newly painted pirate logo and “Home of the Pirates” on the field house.    Thank you, Shane!
Gloria Funke is a new addition to our jr/sr high school staff.  Gloria will be working in our Special Education department as a paraprofessional.  Gloria spent the last 34 years working for the United States Postal Service and 14 of those years as Postmaster of the Cottonwood branch.  Gloria has 4 children and 7 grandchildren.
Tori DeCaria joins the jr/sr high school team as the newest Special Education instructor.  Tori and husband Mark have two children Gabe 5 years old and Alaina 4.  Tori grew up in LasVegas, graduating from the University of Nevada, LasVegas with a bachelor’s degree in Human Services Counseling and a master’s in Special Education.  She and her family moved to Grangeville two years ago.
We look forward to a great year.
