What a difference a year makes! The Prairie football team rolled to an easy 60-6 win over the 2-time defending 1-A Division 2 state champion Salmon River Savages at Riggins Friday, Sept. 12. 
With the core group of that 2-time championship team graduated and one of the few holdovers, Jimmy Shepherd, out with a hand injury, the Pirates had little trouble rolling over the Savages, scoring each of the first 7 times they had the ball and only once did they need more than 3 plays to score. Prairie took the opening kickoff and on the second play from scrimmage Hunter McWilliams went around the right end for 58 yards and a touchdown. Lucas Arnzen added the 2-pointer to make it 8-0 just 48 seconds into the contest. Salmon River had to turn the ball over on downs at their own 40 and on the next play Jake Bruner tossed a short pass out to Isaiah Shears on the left side. Shears made a nice cutback at the 30 to make good use of his blocking and wound up going all the way for a 40 yard touchdown. Bruner ran in the 2-pointer to make it 16-0. Salmon River alternated their quarterbacks between sophomore Tucker Boyd and freshman Devan Branstetter. Branstetter’s first pass of the game went for 45 yards to get the Savages into Prairie territory at the 27 but 3 plays later Boyd was back in and he got a big rush forcing a bad pass that Shears was just waiting for. Shears caught the ball at the 24 and went 76 yards for another Pirate touchdown. McWilliams ran in the 2-pointer to make it 24-0. It was 3 plays and punt on the Savages next possession with Prairie taking over at the Salmon River 45 after a 14 yard return by Mason Dalgliesh. 2 plays later McWilliams scored his second touchdown of the game as Bruner rolled out to the right and pitched the ball to McWilliams who took it 43 yards for the score. The 2-point pass attempt was incomplete as Prairie led 30-0 with 2:33 still left in the first quarter. A penalty helped Salmon River pick up a first down on their next possession but their fourth down fake punt try came up 2 yards short with Prairie taking over at their own 40. 2 plays later Bruner lofted a perfect pass deep down the left side to a streaking Rhett Schlader who caught the ball in stride and went 59 yards for another Pirates touchdown. McWilliams added the 2-pointer to make it 38-0. Devin Bruegeman ended Salmon River’s next possession with an interception at the Prairie 44. Some of the backups went in at this point, including Schlader at quarterback. On the second play from scrimmage McWilliams was finally tackled short of the goal line as he gained 23 yards around left end to the Salmon River 28. On the next play Schlader was scrambling around trying to find an open receiver and appeared to go over the line of scrimmage before finding Terran Peery downfield for a 28 yard touchdown. No penalty flags were thrown and the play stood. The 2-point try failed leaving Prairie up 44-0. Salmon River finally put together a scoring drive going 71 yards in 12 plays. Prairie appeared to have it stopped when Dalgliesh intercepted a Boyd pass in the end zone but a roughing the passer penalty negated the interception and Salmon River wound up scoring on the next play. The 2-point try failed making it 44-6. It didn’t take Prairie long to answer back as McWilliams scored his third touchdown on just his fourth carry of the game on Prairie’s second play following the kickoff. This time McWilliams went 56 yards giving him 180 yards on 4 carries for the game. Calvin Hinkelman added the 2-pointer to make it 52-6 which is where the score stood at the half.  With
a 46-point lead the game would have been over at halftime in previous years
but this year the 45-point rule was changed to where you go to a running
clock in the second half once a 45-point lea is reached. The clock stops
only after scoring plays and called timeouts.
In the second half Salmon River took the kickoff and moved out to midfield before the drive stalled at the Prairie 38. Prairie took over at their 43 and this time needed a whopping 5 plays to score. Each of the 5 plays went at least 9 yards with the touchdown coming on a pass from Bruner to Schlader from 10 yards out. Hinkelman added the 2-pointer to make it 60-6. Salmon River appeared headed for a second score as they got down to the Prairie 4 yard line before the defense stopped them. The JV offense went in at that point and were able to get out to the 16 before a fumble turned the ball over. Salmon River had one last possession but was unable to gain a first down and Prairie was able to then run out the clock. The Pirates had 418 yards of offense, 259 rushing on just 17 attempts and 159 more passing as Prairie completed all 6 of their pass attempts. As mentioned McWilliams gained 180 yards on just 4 carries with 3 touchdowns. 6 other Prairie runners gained at least 10 yards. Brandon Anderson gained 14 on 2 carries. Schlader had 13 on 1 carry. Brandon Higgins and Lucas Wemhoff each gained 12 yards on 2 carries and Bruner had 12 yards on 1 carry while Lucas Arnzen gained 10 yards on 2 carries. Bruner was a perfect 5 for 5 passing for 131 yards with 3 touchdowns. Schlader was 1 for 1 for 28 yards and a touchdown. Salmon River gained 198 yards, 177 of that passing on 16 completions. The Pirates stuffed their running game holding the Savages to 18 yards on 28 attempts. Boyd was 5 for 10 with an interception for 48 yards while Branstetter was 12 for 21 with an interception for 129 yards. McWilliams and Peery led in tackles with 7 each. McWilliams also had ½ a sack. Hinkelman had 6½ tackles including a sack.. Bruner had 4½. Dalgliesh had 3½. Arnzen and Anderson had 3 each. John Mager had 2½. Shears had 2 plus an interception. Schlader had 2. Bruegeman had 1 plus an interception. Ross had 2 assists on sacks. Bobby Hood had a ½ tackle plus half a sack. Dally Ratcliff, Bobby Hood, Hunter Chaffee and Philip Spencer each had 1 tackle. The Pirates are now 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in league play. Their next game will be at Council this Friday at 6 p.m. PDT.  Spencer 5th at Asotin meet Peter Spencer and Ryan Glimp of Prairie are again competing with the Highland Crosscountry team this year. They had their first meet this past Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Asotin Island Run Invite at Chief Timothy Park. Spencer was Highland’s top finisher as he placed 5th overall in 14:17.33 over the 2.6 mile course. Glimp was 52nd overal lin 19:58.30. They helped Highland finished 6th out of 9 teams. Glimp had also previously competed at the Troy Invitational on August 28 where he finished 24th in 22:19. Spencer did not compete at that meet.
