overwhelm Council
A battle of unbeaten teams quickly turned into a mismatch as the Prairie Pirates won 60-8 at Council Friday, Sept. 19. 
Council had come into the game 3-0 and had outscored their previous opponents 176-0 but Prairie showed them right off the get-go that this was going to be different. Lucas Arnzen picked up 25 yards on Prairie’s first play from scrimmage and Hunter McWilliams picked up 27 on Prairie’s second play. The drive stalled a bit at that point as Prairie wound up facing fourth down and 9 from the 15. Quarterback Jake Bruner rolled out to the right on fourth down and tossed a short pass to Isaiah Shears who not only picked up the first down but made it to the end zone. The 2-point try came up short but Prairie led 6-0. Prairie forced Council to punt on their first possession and took over at their own 42. The Pirates then ground out a 10 play drive that featured 9 running plays to add another score. Calvin Hinkelman converted a fourth and 1 with an 8 yard burst up the middle. On the next play Bruner connected with Rhett Schlader for 15 yards. Two plays later Bruner found a hole in the middle and went 17 yards for the touchdown. The 2-point try again failed as Prairie led 12-0. An interception by Mason Dalgliesh ended Council’s second possession but Prairie couldn’t capitalize as Bruner missed on 4 straight pass attempts. Council took over at their own 36 but didn’t keep the ball very long as Schlader came in from the quarterback’s blind side for a sack and forced a fumble as well with Tanner Ross recovering at the 18. A 12 yard run by Hunter McWilliams set up a first and goal at the 1 and Bruner went in for the score on the next play. Hinkelman ran in the 2-pointer to make it 20-0 early in the second quarter. Council was stopped again and tried a fake punt but the punter fumbled the ball with Hinkelman recovering to set the Pirates up at the Council 18 yard line. Bruner connected with Schlader down the right side and when the defender fell down, Schlader had an easy touchdown. The 2-point try again failed with Prairie leading 26-0. The next series was the Terran Peery series. Peery is the kicker and somehow made it all the way down to the 19 to tackled the returner. 3 plays later he burst through the line and chased the quarterback all the way into the end zone where he tackled him for a safety that made it 28-0. The ensuing free kick from the 20 by Council went out of bounds at the Prairie 42. Arnzen broke through for a 32 yard gain on Prairie’s first play.  3

Shears leapt and made a great catch while parallel to the ground above
the goal line. He came down in the end zone for a 26 yard scoring play.
Hinkelman added the 2-pointer to make it 36-0.
Council finally got across the 50 on their next possession, getting down as far as the Prairie 30 before giving up the ball on downs as Dalgliesh made a defensive play on a fourth down pass attempt. Prairie gave the ball right back 2 plays later on a fumble but Dalgliesh intercepted a Council pass on the next play at the Prairie 10 and returned it out to the 38. Prairie came up short on fourth down but Council got just 1 play off before the half ended. Council opened the second half with a great kickoff return out to the Prairie 35. A personal foul penalty was called on the tackle moving Council to the Prairie 20. Prairie appeared to have Council stopped just short on fourth down at the 10 but another penalty gave Council a first and goal at the 5. Arnzen talked the quarterback for a 5 yard loss on first down and this time Council was assessed a personal foul penalty pushing them back to the 25. Council found a hole on the left side on the next play and Casey DeHaas burst through for a 25 yard touchdown. DeHaas added the 2-pointer to make it 36-8. It didn’t take Prairie long to answer back as Peery fielded the short kickoff and ran it back to midfield. After an incomplete pass on first down, Prairie ran the option and Bruner kept the ball and turned upfield and went the distance for the touchdown. Hinkelman added the 2-pointer to make it 44-8. Council’s next possession saw all three plays get thrown for a loss leading to a punt. Prairie took over at their own 36. The Pirates moved down to the Council 37 before a fumbled snap to Bruner turned the ball over. 3 plays later Prairie got the ball right back on a fumble as Ross recover at the Council 48. On the first play following the recovery Arnzen burst through the left side and was off to the races for a 48 yard score. McWilliams added the 2-pointer to make it 52-8. After the score the clock operator, who is apparently not Council’s math teacher, kept the clock running thinking it was a 45-point lead and 1:01 ran off before the referees discovered it was still running. They put it back to 54 seconds. Even if it was a 45-point lead the clock still stops on scoring plays. At least it did at Salmon River. Another penalty on Prairie helped Council pick up a first down on their next possession but the defense stopped them at the Prairie 40 and took over. Prairie had a holding penalty set them back to their 29 but Bruner then found Schlader deep down the left side and when the defender tried to make a play on the ball it took him out of any chance of catching Schlader after the catch was made a Schlader scored on a 71 yard play. Shears caught the 2-point pass from Bruner to give Prairie 60 points for their third straight game. This time the clock did go to running mode and subs played the rest of the way on both sides as Council wound up running out the rest of the clock. Prairie wound up with 448 yards of offense, 275 on 31 running plays and 173 more through the air. Council was held to just 80 total yards after having just 3 yards total at the half. Arnzen gained 129 yards rushing on 9 carries. Bruner added 77 on 7 carries and McWilliams had 54 on 12 carries. Bruner completed 7 of 16 passes for 173 yards. Schlader caught 4 for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns and Shears caught 3 for 64 and 2 touchdowns. Council had 38 yards rushing on 36 rushing attempts and their quarterbacks were 6 for 15 with 2 interceptions for 42 yards. Defensively the Pirates sacked Council’s quarterback 4 times, had 2 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries. On the down side they were whistled for 10 penalties, 8 on defense, nearly all called by the same referee. Prairie’s coaches figured he was going to need to ice that right arm down after throwing all those flags. Dalgliesh led in tackles with 7½ plus 2 interceptions. Hinkelman had 6 tackles including a sack. Peery had 5½ including a sack and a half with a safety. McWilliams had 4 tackles. Bruner and Shears each had 3 ½ tackles. Arnzen had 3 tackles including half a sack. Ross had 2½ tackles and 2 fumble recoveries. Schlader had 1½ tackles including a sack and forced fumble. Jayce Huling and Dereck Arnzen each had 1 tackle. Devin Bruegeman and Dally Ratcliff each had ½ a tackle. With the win Prairie is 3-0 on the season. Their next game is Homecoming, this Friday against Clearwater Valley at 7 p.m. It is also their first home game of the season. Spencer 2nd at Seaport Invite Peter Spencer placed 2nd overall in 16:20.03 at the Seaport Invite Cross Country Meet held at Clarkston High School Saturday, Sept. 20. Ryan Glimp of Prairie placed 67th in 23:58.38. They competed with the Highland team that wound up placing 7th out of 10 teams.
