Pirates win big at Lapwai
The Prairie football team won 60-16 at Lapwai Friday, Oct. 3 to set up a first place showdown with Troy this Friday at Cottonwood.
After Troy edged Kamiah last week, they and Prairie are the only unbeatens left in White Pine League play.Bobby Hill, left, makes a block to spring Calvin Hinkelman for more yardage. In the background is John Mager.
Mason Dalgliesh muffed the opening kickoff but was able to pick the ball up and go 30 yards to the Prairie 45.
Two plays later Lucas Arnzen went up the middle and broke free for a 55 yard touchdown run. Hunter McWilliams added the 2-pointer to give Prairie an 8-0 lead just 40 seconds into the game.
Lapwai was stopped short on fourth down and Prairie got the ball back on their own 48.
This drive didn’t start well as quarterback Jake Bruner and McWilliams couldn’t connect on a pitch with McWilliams recovering for a 5 yard loss. Prairie recovered well though with Bruner connecting with Rhett Schlader for 10 yards and Bruner then got Lapwai to jump offsides with a hard count for a first down. Two running plays each by McWilliams and Calvin Hinkelman set up first and goal at the 1. Bruner took the ball in for the touchdown on the next play. McWilliams added the 2-pointer to make it 16-0.
On Lapwai’s next possession the Wildcats picked up a first down and got to midfield up Arnzen then sacked quarterback Courage Lone Bear for a 13 yard loss which led to a punt.
Prairie took over at their own 22 and McWilliams gained 30 yards to move the ball into Lapwai territory at the 48. On the next play Bruner’s pass to Schlader was batted up by a Lapwai defender and intercepted.
Two plays later Lapwai’s Cameron Shawl broke free for a 54 yard touchdown run. Lone Bear then passed to Tommy Williams for the 2-pointer that cut Prairie’s lead to 16-8.
Lapwai then tried an onside kick but Tanner Ross recovered at the Prairie 48.
3 running plays led to a first down at the 41. After an incomplete pass, Bruner tossed a screen pass to the right to Schlader, who took the ball 41 yards for a touchdown. Bruner then passed to a wide open Devin Bruegeman for the 2-pointer to make it 24-8.
Lapwai then went 3 incomplete passes and punt, giving Prairie the ball back at their 26. McWilliams gained 26 yards on a little flare pass out to the left and 2 plays later Isaiah Shears was so wide open on this catch that there wasn’t a Lapwai defender within 20 yards. This wound up as an 80 yard scoring play.Bruner connected on a deep pass to Dalgliesh who was tackled at the 1 yard line after a 39 yard gain. McWilliams went in for the score on the next play and then added the 2-pointer to make it 32-8 with 1:17 still left in the first quarter.
Lapwai’s next possession ended in a fumble at the Lapwai 30 with Dalgliesh scooping up the ball for the Pirates and returning it to the 18.
McWilliams gained 13 yards total on 3 carries to set up first and goal at the 4. A false start penalty and Bruner being sacked for a 10 yard loss moved Prairie back to the 19. Bruner then connected with McWilliams on a short pass to the right side. McWilliams broke a couple of tackles on his way to a 19 yard touchdown. Bruner pass to Isaiah Shears for the 2-pointer to make it 40-8 early in the second quarter.
Lapwai came back with a couple of first downs and got down to the Prairie 26 before Ross and Shears combined on a sack of Lone Bear for a 10 yard loss. Lapwai wound up 7 yards short on a fourth down pass with Prairie taking over at the 23.
Prairie loses 3 yards on first down then Bruner goes back to pass and somehow Shears gets wide open deep down the field, catching Bruner’s pass at the Lapwai 45 without a defender within 20 yards of him. He easily takes it in for an 80 yard touchdown play. The 2-point try failed, making it 46-8.
Two plays later Dalgliesh intercepts a Lone Bear pass and returns it 15 yards to the Lapwai 20. McWilliams takes a pitch to the right and goes 20 yards for the score on the next play. This 2-point try also failed as Prairie led 52-8.
Lapwai’s next possession ends in a fumble as Ross recovers at the Lapwai 40. 4 plays later Bruner goes 6 runs on a keeper to the right and McWilliams adds the 2-pointer to make it 60-8 with 1:09 left in the first half.
The entire second half is played with a running clock.
Lapwai gets the ball first to open the second half and moves the ball to midfield before turning it over on downs.
Prairie puts their subs in on offense with Bruegeman at quarterback and Lucas Wemhoff and Brandon Anderson seeing most of the duty at running back.
They picked up a first down before a sack of Bruegeman forced a punt.
Lapwai meanwhile still has their first unit offense in the game so Prairie kept their first unit defense on the field.
Shears blows up an end around play for a 10 yard loss that leads to a punt. Prairie put their first unit offense back in and that didn’t go well as Bruner’s pass to Arnzen is intercepted.
Lapwai gave the ball right back on an interception 4 plays later as McWilliams makes the play at the Prairie 45.Devin Bruegeman was wide open on a 2-point conversion pass.
With Bruegeman completing a 19 yard pass to Hinkelman and later scrambling out of pass formation for a 17 yard gain, Prairie moved the ball to the Lapwai 3 for first and goal. The drive stalled there and Lapwai wound up taking over on downs at their own 2.
At this point Prairie put their subs in on defense while Lapwai still had their first team offense on the field.
Lapwai moved out to the 37 on a 32 yard pass to Williams and 2 plays later Shawl caught a deep pass and went 61 yards for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion wound up being the game’s final play.
Prairie wound up with 455 yards of offense to 244 for Lapwai.
The Pirates had 220 yards rushing on 40 attempts led by McWilliams who had 90 yards on 12 carries. Arnzen had 55 yards on just 2 carries. Dalgliesh added 28 yards on 4 carries and Hinkelman had 24 yards on 4 carries.
Bruner was 6 for 10 passing with 2 interceptions for 215 yards. Bruegeman was 1 for 1 for 19 yards.
Schlader caught 2 passes for 51 yards and McWilliams 2 for 45. Shears caught 1 for 80 yards, Dalgliesh 1 for 39 yards and Hinkelman 1 for 19 yards.
Lapwai had 76 yards rushing on 26 attempts with Shawl picking up 99 on 16 carries.
Lone Bear was 10 for 28 passing with 2 interceptions for 168 yards. Shawl caught 3 for 73.
Hinkelman led in tackles with 9½. Bruner and Terran Peery each had 5½. Shears had 3½ including half a sack. Dalgliesh had 3 plus an interception and a fumble recovery. Schlader had 3 tackles. McWilliams had 2½ plus an interception. Arnzen had 2½ including a sack. Ross had 2 tackles including half a sack plus an onside kick recovery. Dally Ratcliff had 1 tackle.
With the win Prairie is  5-0 overall and 3-0 in league play. Their next game is a showdown for first place in the White Pine League against Troy at Cottonwood Friday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
