volunteers awarded
Volunteers from St. Mary’s Hospital and Clearwater Valley Hospital& Clinics were honored at the 2014 Idaho Hospital Conference held in Sun Valley from October 4th through the 7th. Kathy Daughtery a volunteer for CVHC received the LOVE (Leader of Volunteer Excellence) award and Zara Hasselstrom a SMH volunteer was chosen as a finalist for the LOVE award. “It is pretty amazing to have volunteers from each of our facilities honored at this convention; it just goes to show what wonderful volunteers we have at both hospitals,” commented Donna Quick SMH Volunteer Coordinator. The generosity Kathy Daughtery fosters in the Orofino area is unbelievable. In a community where jobs are hard to come by, she garners the support of citizens, businesses and community leaders. Every gift is meaningful in her eyes and she showers her affection on all who provide contributions and support – which is usually anyone she asks, because if you’ve met her, you’ll quickly realize there’s no saying no to this effervescent and lively volunteer! From bazaars and auctions to the Harvest Moon Cruise, Valentine’s Pie Social and the hospital Gift Cabinet Kathy’s fingerprints are everywhere, bringing people together and generating support. Her service doesn’t stop at the hospital door where she greets patients and families every week. Together with her auxiliary team, they reach out to fill vital community needs including filling back to school back packs for young students, sending diabetic youth to special summer camps, and getting Santa gifts organized for families in need. Zara has been a member of the St. Mary’s Hospital Mission Committee since 2005 and the chairman for the hospital sponsored food bank since 2007. The food bank began back in 2002 and it basically started as a “food closet”. Over the years it has developed into a full-fledged food bank; due largely in part to Zara’s dedication and hard work. Zara spends hours and hours purchasing items for the food bank, organizing food drives, stocking shelves, clearing shelves of expired food and distributing food. She developed a policy on distribution of food to make sure families were receiving all the required food necessary for a healthy diet plus also making sure the food bank was not being taken advantage of by families who did not qualify for assistance. “This conference pushed me to be a better volunteer and to have more compassion for those in need. I am very thankful for our hospital and what it has helped me accomplish in my life,” commented Hasselstrom when asked about the honor. “I look forward to being the best steward within the hospital and out in the public for the better of our community.”
