beat Kubs for league title
The Prairie football team was held to their lowest scoring total of the season but still easily dispatched Kamiah 48-6 to finish their regular season unbeaten and win the White Pine League championship Friday, Oct. 24 at Cottonwood. 
It was also senior night for the Pirates with 7 senior football players, 2 cheerleaders and a stat keeper honored before the game. Lucas Arnzen, Mason Dalgliesh, John Mager, Rhett Schlader, Tanner Ross, Hunter McWilliams and Dally Ratcliff were the players honored with Beth Dinning and Kirstin Latimer being the cheerleader honored and Sydney Glimp is the senior statkeeper. Quarterback Jake Bruner didn’t seem sharp on his deep passing as he tossed a couple of interceptions on poorly thrown balls but still managed to complete 5 passes that went for 22 or more yards. The defense was the story of the game though as the Pirates smothered Kamiah’s offense holding them to just 21 yards passing and only allowing 4 plays to go for double digit yardage while 7 went for negative yardage. Only once did Kamiah get past the Pirates 34 yard line. Prairie received the opening kickoff and marched the ball 65 yards for a score. McWilliams carried the ball 5 times for 30 yards and Isaiah Shears caught 1 pass for 24. Bruner wound up scoring from the 1 with the 2 point try failing as Prairie took a 6-0 lead a little over 2 minutes into the game. Kamiah’s first possession was 3 plays and punt with Prairie taking over at their own 30. The drive started with Bruner misfiring on a deep pass, his second miss of the game, but he completed hit other 4 pass attempts including a 42 yard post pattern to Dalgliesh. Dalgliesh also scored the touchdown on a fourth and 6 from the 13 yard line on a short pass out to the left that he took into the end zone. Bruner ran in the 2-pointer to make it 14-0. For Kamiah it was 3 plays and punt again but disaster struck for them on the punt as the snap sailed over the punter’s head and Prairie took over at the Kamiah 14 yard line. 2 plays later McWilliams took a pitch around right end for a 10 yard scoring play. Bruner again added the 2-pointer to make it 22-0. Kamiah was 3 plays and punt for the third straight time with Prairie taking over at the 20 after a touchback on the punt. Bruner gave it right back on the first play as Kamiah intercepted his deep pass for Shears at the 46. On the ensuing drive, Kamiah picked up their initial first down of the game as quarterback Parker Whipple broke free for a 40 yard run on an option play. Lucas Arnzen made the touchdown saving tackle at the 10 yard line. 3 plays later though Kamiah was able to punch the ball into the end zone and cut Prairie’s lead to 22-6.  Prairie
answered right back with a 75 yard scoring drive. Bruner completed 4 of
6 passes on the drive while McWilliams picked up 19 yards rushing. The
Pirates converted twice on fourth down to keep the drive going. The first
time Bruner connected with Shears for a 15 yard gain on fourth and 3 and
the second time was the touchdown. Facing a fourth and 1 at the 11 Bruner
was just going to sneak the ball for the yard but the whole right side
opened up and he wound up going untouched for the score. The 2-point try
came up short but Prairie led 28-6.
Kamiah’s ensuing drive stalled at the Prairie 47 yard line as Whipple’s fourth down pass fell incomplete. They got the ball right back though on Bruner’s second interception of the game on a deep pass attempt to Schlader. The Kubs took over at their own 29 and picked up a first down but were forced to punt it away and Prairie ran out the half. Kamiah received the second half kickoff and moved the ball to the Prairie 39 before the Pirate defense stopped them as Terran Peery and Calvin Hinkelman made the tackle for no gain on a fourth down pass play. Prairie took over at their own 40 and kept mostly to the running game as they moved 60 yards in 8 plays. McWilliams, Hinkelman and Bruner each had a run of at least 13 yards in the drive with McWilliams going in from the 1 for the touchdown. Kamiah again stopped the 2-point try as Prairie made it 34-6. Peery recovered a Kamiah fumble to end the next Kubs possession at the Prairie 38. On the first play after the fumble Hinkelman went around the right side for a 62 yard touchdown but it was called back on a holding penalty 12 yards downfield. A 22 yard pass to McWilliams converted the first down and a 24 yard completion to Shears over the middle set Prairie up at the 13. McWilliams took a pitch around right end and scored on the next play. He then added the 2-pointer to give Prairie a 42-6 lead with 1:39 left in the third quarter. Kamiah made their deepest penetration into Prairie territory since their touchdown as they got as far as the Prairie 34 before Hinkelman stuffed a fourth down and 1 run for no gain to give Prairie the ball back at that point. 3 plays later Bruner found Shears wide open 20 yards downfield and Shears went the distance for a 63 yard scoring play. The 2-point pass dropped incomplete as Prairie led 48-6. Subs on both sides finished out the game. Prairie had 203 yards rushing on 37 attempts with McWilliams picking up 97 yards on 16 carries. Hinkelman had 49 yards on 6 carries and Bruner had 39 on 5 carries. Bruner was 13 for 23 with 2 interceptions for 253 yards passing. Shears caught 7 passes for 148 yards with Dalgliesh catching 3 for 56 yards, McWilliams 2 for 38 and Hinkelman 1 for 11. Kamiah had 150 yards rushing on 49 attempts, well down from their usual 300+. Kamiah passers completed a 8 of 10 attempts, a great percentage, but for only 21 yards. Hinkelman led the defense with 10½ tackles. Shears had 7½ tackles including a pair of sacks on consecutive plays near the end of the first half. Peery had 7 tackles plus a fumble recovery. Ratcliff had 5½ tackles. Devin Bruegeman had 5, Mason Dalgliesh 4, Bruner 3½, Brandon Anderson 2½, Arnzen and Ross 2 each, Schlader, Jayce Huling and Dereck Arnzen 1½ each, McWilliams 1 and Mager and Bobby Hood ½ a tackle each. Prairie finishes the regular season with an 8-0 record, 6-0 in the league. They will face Wallace in a first round state game this Thursday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. at Cottonwood.  Pirates host Wallace Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. Prairie will host Wallace in a first round state playoff game this Thursday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. at the Prairie Football Field. Since it is a State Playoff Game the only passes that will be honored are IHSAA passes. Neither Prairie season or business passes nor student passes will be honored.
