Pirates crush Wallace, Oakley up next
The Prairie football team opened their state playoff run with a resounding 80-26 win over the Wallace Miners Thursday, Oct. 30 at Cottonwood. The Wallace defender just missed deflecting a pass that was caught by Mason Dalgliesh. After the defender fell down, Dalgliesh had an easy path to the end zone.
Next up is Oakley this Friday, Nov. 7 at 4 p.m. at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow. Prairie has a 1-1 record against the Hornets with the previous matchups coming in the 2008 and 2009 state championship games.
Against Wallace Prairie received the opening kickoff and needed just 2 plays to score. After Calvin Hinkelman’s 10 yard return of a short kickoff set them up at their own 45, Hunter McWilliams took a pitch around right end and went for 47 yards, slipping out of at least 3 attempted tackles along the way.
Jake Bruner scored from the 8 on the next play and then passed to a wide open Isaiah Shears for the 2-pointer to give Prairie an 8-0 lead just 38 seconds into the game.
Wallace picked up a couple of first downs with their solid running game before stalling out at the Prairie 39. Brady Brantley’s punt checked up at the 3 yard line and rolled dead.
Prairie needed just one play to score as Bruner found Rhett Schlader with a step on the defenders over the middle and Schlader had the speed to take the ball the remaining 60 yards for a 97 yard scoring play, quite possibly the longest pass play in Prairie history.. McWilliams ran in the 2-pointer to make it 16-0.
Wallace was unable to pick up a first down this time and Prairie took over at the Wallace 38 after a short punt of only 21 yards.
Bruner passed to Hinkelman for 11 yards on first down then McWilliams was hit for a loss in the backfield. McWilliams made up for that loss by gaining 13 and 12 yards on the next two plays to put another touchdown on the board. Hinkelman ran in the 2-pointer to make it 24-0 with 4:43 left in the first quarter.
An illegal block cost Wallace a big gainer on their next series and they wound up turning the ball over on downs at the Wallace 48.
4 plays later Prairie was in the endzone again with Schlader breaking wide open over the middle for a 29 yard scoring play. The conversion pass failed with Prairie leading 30-0, still in the first quarter.
Wallace turned the ball over on downs on the first play of the second quarter at their own 38. McWilliams fumbled on the first play following but an illegal substitution penalty on the Miners gave Prairie back the ball at the 33. McWilliams then scored on the next play as he took the ball around the left tackle and cut back to the right and outran the defense to the end zone. Terran Peery ran in the 2-pointer to make it 38-0.
Peery then scored Prairie’s next touchdown as he intercepted Justin Bayer’s pass at the 30 yard line and ran it back for a touchdown that made it 44-0 as the 2-point try failed.
After another Wallace punt, Prairie had to overcome a holding penalty that set them back to their own 25. Bruner hit Shears with a little swing pass to the right that Shears took 35 yards to the Wallace 40. On the next play Mason Dalgliesh caught a pass at the 20 and carried it into the end zone to make it 50-0 with 7:29 left in the Terran Peery tackles a Wallace runner. Also shown from left are Rhett Schlader, Tanner Ross and Isaiah Shears.half as the 2-point try failed again.
With the game pretty much over Wallace finally was able to get on the scoreboard as they put together a 6 play scoring drive to cut the lead to 50-6.
Prairie put backup quarterback Rhett Schlader in the game and he ran an option for a 49 yard gain to the Wallace 3 yard line. A fumble on the next play kept Prairie from scoring again.
Wallace was forced to punt and with Bruner back under center Prairie scored again with Schlader the pass receiver on a 21 yard scoring play. Bruner passed to Shears for the 2-pointer to make it 58-6 with 2:05 left in the half.
Wallace finally found some traction with their passing game as they added another score with 3 straight long yardage pass plays. The touchdown came on a trick play, the hook and lateral with Brantly catching a short pass. He then lateraled back to Mitchell Millard who finished off a 34 yard scoring play that cut the lead to 58-12.
Wallace tried an onside kick but Devin Bruegeman picked up the ball and returned it 7 yards to the Wallace 45.
Bruner passed to Schlader for 10 yards to the 35 and then Hinkelman went over the right side and broke free for a 35 yard touchdown. Bruner passed to Schlader to make it 66-12 with 45 seconds left in the half.
Wallace went for another big pass play but Bruner intercepted and Prairie then just ran out the half.
Under last year’s rules the game would have been over at that point but now they had to play the second half.
Wallace needed just 1 play to score in the second half as Millard got around right end for a 63 yard scoring run that cut the lead to 66-18.
They then decided to kick it deep and Shears caught the ball at the 15, took the ball toward the left sideline then cut back all the way across the field and raced down the right sideline for an 85 yard kickoff return to make it 72-18, tying Prairie’s highest scoring output of the season to that point.Calvin Hinkelman wards off a Wallace defender with a stiffarm as he picks up big yardage.
Wallace answered back with a touchdown against a Prairie defense that had started substituting freely and had lost their first half intensity as they made it 72-26 after finally adding a 2-pointer. It was the first time all season Prairie had allowed more than 3 touchdowns.
Prairie nearly added another kickoff return for a touchdown as Wallace went to an onside only to see Hinkelman pick up the ball at the 50 and return it to the Wallace 27 before being hauled down.
With basically the JV offense on the field, Tyson Schlader ran a keeper 2 plays later for a 26 yard touchdown. Brandon Higgins ran in the 2-pointer to make it 80-26.
Wallace threatened to add another score against the backup defense but Bruegeman intercepted a Bayer pass at the Prairie 13 to end that threat.
The JV offense then moved the ball downfield and then nearly scored on a trick play. Quarterback Tyson Schlader and tailback Higgins switched plays with the ball at the Wallace 30. Higgins took the snap then turned and tossed the ball to Schlader who passed the ball downfield to Hunter Chaffee who was tackled at the 1. A false start penalty set Prairie back to the 6 and a fumble on the next play gave Wallace the ball at the 5.
Wallace tried to pass their way downfield but 4 of their 5 attempts fell incomplete and with the clock not stopping on incompletions anymore, the clock ran out.
Prairie had 601 yards of offense in the game with 282 yards rushing on 24 attempts and 319 yards passing.
McWilliams gained 123 yards on just 8 carries. Rhett Schlader added 49 yards on 1 carry. Hinkelman had 35 yards on 1 carry. Tyson Schlader had 28 yards on 2 carries and Higgins had 26 yards on 3 carries.
Bruner completed 9 of 13 passes for 290 yards and Tyson Schlader was 1 for 1 for 29 yards. Rhett Schlader caught 4 passes for 157 yards and 3 touchdowns. Shears caught 2 for 72. Dalgliesh 1 for 40, Chaffee 1 for 29, Hinkelman 1 for 11 and McWilliams 1 for 10.
Wallace gained 390 yards, 211 on 38 rushing attempts and Bayer completed 8 of 21 passes with 3 interceptions for 179 yards.
Millard gained 163 yards rushing on 21 carries.
Defensively Peery led the team with 8½ tackles plus an interception return for a touchdown.  Rhett Schlader and Mason Dalgliesh each had 6 tackles. Bruner had 4 tackles plus an interception. Hinkelman and Brandon Anderson had 4 tackles each. Shears had 3½ tackles. Tanner Ross and Dally Ratcliff had 3 tackles each. Jayce Uhling had 2½ tackles. Lucas Wemhoff had 2 tackle. McWilliams, John Mager and Chaffee had 1 tackle each. Bruegeman had an interception.
Prairie improves to 9-0 on the season and as stated earlier will face Oakley, the District 4 tri-champion, at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7 at the Kibbie Dome. Oakley, Raft River and Valley tied for the District 4 championship with Oakley drawing the #2 seed on the tiebreaker. Other state games this week have Kamiah traveling to Arco to play Butte County, Troy traveling to Hazelton to face Valley which got the #1 nod in District 4, and Genesee traveling to Malta to play Raft River. The Deary-Wilder 1A-Div 2 game will follow the Prairie-Oakley game in the Kibbie Dome Friday.
