Pirates beat Oakley, Kubs next
The Prairie football team broke open a close game late in the first half and went on to beat Oakley 50-20 in a quarterfinal state playoff game Friday, Nov. 7 at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow.Hunter McWilliams races down the right sideline for a 75-yard touchdown run that gave Prairie a 14-0 load over Oakley.
It wasn’t a good start for the Pirates as they fumbled the ball away on their own 17 on their first offensive play of the game.
The defense came through though and forced Oakley to turn the ball over on downs after a little help from a holding penalty.
Prairie took over at their own 34 and two plays later Jake Bruner found Rhett Schlader open over the middle at about the Oakley 40 and Schlader outraced the defenders to the end zone for a 64 yard scoring play.  Hunter McWilliams ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-0.
The defense stopped Oakley short on a fake punt and took over at their own 35.
McWilliams serpentined his way through the Oakley defense for a 38 yard gain. 3 plays later Bruner scrambled away from the pass rush for 11 yards to the 3 for a first and goal.
A fumble on the next play kept Prairie from adding to their lead and gave Oakley the ball at the 2.
Oakley could gain just 4 yards in 3 plays and had to punt out of their end zone with Prairie taking over at the 33.
Oakley’s pass rush got to Bruner on consecutive plays and the Pirates turned the ball over on downs at the 28.
The Hornets got a 35 yard gain from Curtis Bedke to the Prairie 6 but a fumble that led to a 17 yard loss on the next play forced Oakley to settle for a field goal attempt from Belgian exchange student Martin Barré. The attempt from 39 yards out went wide left and Prairie took over at the 20.
Bruner hit Schlader on a crossing route for 24 yards but the offense stalled at midfield and Prairie had to punt.
Oakley put together a drive as they moved down to the Prairie 31 but at that point the Oakley quarterback was hit just as he was throwing and his wobbly pass went way right of his intended target, right to Mason Dalgliesh who made the interception at the 12 yard line.
A 6 yard run by McWilliams and a 7 yard scramble by Bruner moved the ball to the 25.
On the next play McWilliams took a pitch to the right and got through the first line of defense and broke into the clear where he outraced the defenders for a 75 yard touchdown that made it 14-0 with 3:14 left in the half.
On the ensuing kicking Wadsworth fielded the ball at the 19 and raced up the sideline for an 81 yard kickoff return that cut Prairie’s lead to 14-6. Schlader and Calvin Hinkelman combined on the stop of the 2-point try.
The next 3 minutes of play though turned the game in Prairie’s favor. The Pirates answered Oakley’s touchdown with a scoring drive as McWilliams returned the Oakley kickoff 30 yards to the Prairie 40.
Facing a third and 10, Bruner connected with Hinkelman for a short pass that Hinkelman turned into a 40 yard game to the Oakley 20.
Two runs by McWilliams moved the ball to the 11. On the next play Bruner ran a quarterback draw where he looked like he was going to pass then tucked the ball and ran for a touchdown. Bruner added the 2-pointer to make it 22-6 with 41 seconds left.
John Mager’s squib kickoff bounced off an Oakley play and Dally Ratcliff recovered at the Oakley 49.
Bruner’s long pass downfield to McWilliams turned into an interception when McWilliams stumbled.
Jake Bruner battled the flu bug but still managed to pass for 4 touchdowns and run for another against Oakley.Oakley tried a couple of passes with one going high and the other being deflected by Schlader. On third and 10 they tried a hook and lateral play that Wallace burned Prairie for a touchdown a week earlier. This one wasn’t nearly as successful. The pass completion was good but Schlader saw the ball being tossed back to a trailing back and hit the runner just as the ball got there forcing a fumble with Lucas Arnzen recovered at the 16.
Bruner passed to Schlader on the next play for the touchdown. The 2-point try failed but suddenly Prairie was up 28-6 instead of by just 8 as they headed to the half.
Oakley received the second half kickoff and converted a couple of first downs to move into Pirate territory at the 38.
On the next play Tanner Ross got to the quarterback just as he was throwing and Bruner intercepted the wobbly pass at the 43 and returned it to the Oakley 42.
5 plays later Bruner connected with Schlader for a 26 yard touchdown, Schlader’s third of the game. Bruner ran in the 2-pointer and a once close game was now 36-6.
After a short kickoff Oakley picked up a first down before turning the ball over on downs as Ross stopped Tallon Muhlestein just short on fourth down at the Prairie 31.
Prairie was able to move the ball to the Oakley 17 before a sack and then an interception gave Oakley the ball at their own 30.
During that drive Oakley started getting chippy, picking up a late hit penalty. Once they took over the ball it got worse.
On a 10 yard pass completion Muhlestein got whistled for targeting when he nailed Hinkelman behind the play. He added to it with an unsportsmanlike penalty that moved the ball back to the 13.
After the next play was over both teams got called for unsportsmanlike penalties.
Oakley followed that up with an 80 yard pass play to Wadsworth and added the 2-pointer to cut the lead to 36-14.
The dirty play by Oakley continued on Prairie’s next series when Oakley was called for a facemask penalty when they ripped Schlader’s helmet off on a 6 yard pass completion. Schlader actually picked up a few more yards but the play was whistled dead once the helmet came off. On the next play Bruner picked up 8 yards on a scramble and slid down at the 40, giving himself up. Muhlestein hit him late anyway and was hit with a 15 yard penalty and ejected from the game, probably as much for his previous transgressions as that one play.
Bruner went on to toss his fourth touchdown of the game a few plays later, a 19 yard completion to Hinkelman. Schlader passed to Terran Peery for the 2-pointer to make it 44-14 with 10:16 left to play.
Another personal foul on Oakley on the touchdown saw Mager kick off from the Oakley 45.
Oakley returned the kick to their 22 and then got a 44 yard gain on a halfback pass by Bedke.
Prairie was able to stop Oakley after that and took over on downs on their own 37.
Schlader moved to quarterback with the game well in hand and directed a 9 play 63 yard scoring drive that was all running plays as Hinkelman finished off the drive with a 3 yard run that made it 50-14 with 3:49 left.
Oakley added a final touchdown against Prairie’s JV defense to make the final score 50-20.Devin Bruegeman, 8, in for an injured Isaiah Shears, provides a key block on Jake Bruner’s 11 yard touchdown run.
Prairie had a balanced attack in the game with 240 yards rushing on 43 attempts and 236 yards passing.
McWilliams gained 151 yards on 15 attempts with Bruner adding 32 on 12 carries despite 24 yards in losses due to sacks. Hinkelman had 31 yards on 6 carries Peery had 18 on 3 carries and Schlader had 17 on 2 carries.
Bruner completed 13 of 21 passes with 2 interceptions for 236 yards. Schlader caught 9 passes for 166 yards and 3 touchdowns. Hinkelman caught 3 for 55 and a touchdown. McWilliams caught 1 for 15 yards.
Oakley had 148 yards rushing and 209 passing.
Bedke led in rushing with 65 yards on 11 carries with Muhlestein adding 47 yards on 11 carries. Oakley passers were 11 for 25 with 2 interceptions.
The Hornets wound up with 15 penalties for 155 yards. 7 of those were personal foul or unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Prairie by contrast had just 8 penalties for 80 yards. Only 1 of those an unsportsmanlike conduct and that came when both sides were whistled at the same time.
Defensively Bruner had 11½ tackles plus an interception. Dalgliesh had 8 tackles and an interception. Hinkelman had 7 ½ tackles. Arnzen had 4½ tackles plus a fumble recovery. Ross had 4½ tackles. Peery had 4 tackles. Schlader had 2½ tackles. Mager had 1½ tackles. Jayce Huling, Brandon Anderson, Hunter Chaffee, Isaiah Shears, Brandon Higgins and Hunter McWilliams each had ½ a tackle. Dally Ratcliff had an onside kick recovery.
It was an impressive win as Prairie won by 30 over a good team despite 4 turnovers and with their starting quarterback fighting the flu. They also lost starting wideout and linebacker Shears to a knee injury early in the first quarter. He thought he would be able to play this week but we’ll see what the doctors have to say.
Prairie improves to 10-0 and will play Kamiah, which beat Butte County 42-36 in overtime. That game will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow.

One of a long strong of personal foul penalties against Oakley in the third quarter. Here you can see Rhett Schlader without a helmet and a penalty flag at the left of the photo. Oakley was called for a facemask penalty and the play was stopped as soon as the helmet came off even though Schlader picked up about 5 more yards.
