beat Kubs, to play Valley for State Title
The Prairie football team overcame a rocky start to win 62-28 over Kamiah in a state semifinal game Thursday, Nov. 13 at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow. Kamiah received the opening kickoff and proceeded to march down the field to score a touchdown and put the  Pirates
behind for the first time all season. A couple of encroachment penalties
helped the Kubs keep the drive alive, one of them coming on a fourth down
and 3.
Prairie then proceeded to give the ball right back on a fumble on their second offensive play, setting the Kubs up on the Prairie 37 yard line. The Kubs went for the big strike to try and put the Pirates down by at least 14 as Parker Whipple passed 20 yards downfield on the first play following the Prairie turnover. He underthrew the ball which allowed Rhett Schlader to make the adjustment and intercept the ball at the 17 yard line. He returned it 38 yards to the Kamiah 45. Four plays later Jake Bruner found Schlader open in the left corner of the end zone for a 26 yard touchdown play. He again passed to Schlader for the 2-pointer to tie the game at 8-8. The next 12 minutes of action tilted the game towards the Pirates. The defense allowed Kamiah just 2 first downs in 4 possessions, forcing 3 punts and one turnover on downs. Each time Prairie’s offense took over they scored a touchdown. After Kamiah’s first punt Prairie took over at their own 35 and it took just one play to score as Bruner found Schlader open deep over the middle for a 65 yard scoring play. The 2-point try fell short but Prairie had their first lead of the game at 14-6. After Kamiah’s second punt Prairie took over at their own 15. This time it took a little longer but the result was the same. A 22 yard pass completion to Hunter McWilliams was followed a couple plays later by a 22 yard run by Bruner on third and 2. A big gain on a pass play to Terran Peery got called back on a holding penalty putting Prairie into a first and 27 situation. Bruner gained 12 yards on a keeper and then passed to Schlader for 12 more to set up a very manageable third and 3. McWilliams then ran a sweep around right end for 26 yards all the way to the end zone on the first play of the second quarter. Bruner ran in the 2-pointer to make it 22-8. Kamiah then turned the ball over on downs as Whipple was tackled for a 4 yard loss on fourth down with Prairie getting the ball at their own 47. 5 plays later Schlader had his third touchdown of the game as Bruner connected with him on a post pattern over the middle for 26 yards. Schlader caught the 2-point pass from Bruner to make it 30-8.  It
was 3 plays and punt for Kamiah with Prairie taking over at their own 16
after a 44 yard punt.
A 44 yard completion from Bruner to Schlader put the Pirates on the Kubs 36. McWilliams picked up 21 yards over the left side and Calvin Hinkelman finished off the 3-play 84 yard drive with a 15 yard burst up the middle. Bruner ran in the 2-pointer to make it 38-8. Down 30 points the Kubs tried to stem the bleeding by grinding out a long scoring drive. It took them 13 plays to cover 61 yards with Whipple scoring from the 10. Tanner Ross then sacked Whipple on the 2-point try leaving the score at 38-14. Kamiah then surprised nearly everyone in the Dome by kicking off deep. Mason Dalgliesh fielded the ball on 1 hop at the 8 yard line near the left sideline then turned and ran all the way back toward the right sideline and raced up the field for a 92 yard kickoff return that pretty much killed any good feelings Kamiah might have taken into the locker room at halftime as it was now 44-14 with just 21 seconds left in the half. Prairie received the second half kickoff and got big running plays of 17 yards by McWilliams and 18 by Bruner. Bruner then went back to pass and after completing his first 8 and 9 of 10 passes in the first half, threw his only bad pass of the game. He was going for Schlader but underthrew the ball and Whipple was able to intercept at the Kamiah 4 yard line. Kamiah looked to put together another long grind it out drive as they moved down to the Prairie 36 on 14 plays, only one of them a pass. With a first down at the 36 the Kubs went to a wide spread with only the center and one guard in front of Whipple. When Kamiah tried that in the first half Prairie called a timeout to discuss what to do, most likely to let the defenders figure out who the eligible receivers are. This time it appeared Kamiah was looking to spread the defense out so Whipple could find a running lane. Lucas Arnzen rushed and was blocked by the two lineman freeing up Hinkelman who rushed from the right side forcing Whipple to maybe make a decision sooner than he wanted. He wound up barely getting across the line of scrimmage before the ball was knocked loose with Dalgliesh recovering at the Prairie 35. As opposed to Kamiah’s grinding 15 plays that netted 61 yards, Prairie needed just 1 play for McWilliams to run a sweep around right end and break free for a 65 yard touchdown. The 2-point try failed but Prairie was now up 50-14. 
Kamiah looked to grind the ball downfield again but came up short when Bruner blitzed on fourth down and he and Bobby Hood combined to sack Whipple for an 8 yard loss giving Prairie the ball at their own 35. A 48 yard pass to McWilliams put the Pirates in Kubs territory and on the next play Bruner connected with Dalgliesh for 21 yards on a screen pass to the right. Dalgliesh was knocked out of bounds just shy of the goal line. Bruner ran in the ball on the next play for the touchdown. The 2-point try came up short but Prairie now led 56-14 with 9:57 left in the game. After a squib kickoff Kamiah took over on their own 40 and needed 10 plays to score their third touchdown of the game to cut the lead to 56-22. Prairie went to backups on offense with Devin Bruegeman taking over at quarterback. Bruegeman picked up 28 yards on a keeper and 4 plays later Tyson Schlader came in at halfback. He took a pitch from Bruegeman and then passed downfield to Hunter Chaffee who caught the ball at the goal line for a 22 yard scoring play to put Prairie up by 40 at 62-22 with 2:08 left. Kamiah scored 1 final touchdown with their backups in against Prairie’s backups to make the final score 62-28. Prairie wound up with another balanced game offensively with 284 yards rushing on 23 attempts and 300 yards passing on 14 completions. McWilliams had another big game with 164 yards on 10 carries. Bruner added 85 yards on 7 carries while Bruegeman had 27 yards on 2 carries and Hinkelman had 15 yards on 1 carry. Bruner complete 12 of 14 passes with 1 interception for 275 yards. Tyson Schlader was 1 for 1 for 22 yards and Bruegeman was 1 for 1 for 3 yards. Rhett Schlader had 6 catches for 185 yards while McWilliams had 2 catches for 70 yards. Dalgliesh had 2 for 16 yards, Chaffee 1 for 22, Hinkelman 2 for 4 yards and Brandon Anderson 1 for 3 yards. Kamiah had to have won the time of possession by a wide margin as they ran 81 plays compared to just 39 for Prairie. The Kubs had 290 yards rushing on 68 attempts and 81 yards passing. Taylor McAlister had 95 yards rushing on 23 attempts while Whipple had 83 yards on 27 attempts. Whipple was 8 for 13 passing with in interception for 81 yards. Arnzen led the Pirates defensively with 16 tackles. Hinkelman had 13½ tackles. Dalgliesh had 8½ tackles and a fumble recovery. Peery had 8½ tackles. Bruner had 7½ tackles and ½ a sack. Rhett Schlader had 6½ tackles and an interception. Ross had 4 tackles. John Mager had 3½ tackles. Dally Ratcliff and Raice Dalgliesh had 2 tackles each. McWilliams had 1½ tackles. Dereck Arnzen had 1 tackle and Anderson, Justin Schumacher and Jayce Huling had ½ a tackle each and Hood had half a sack. Prairie is now 11-0 on the season and will play Valley Friday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. at the Kibbie Dome for the State Championship.
