Pirates finish regular season with 2 more wins
The Prairie Pirates finished up their regular season at 18-2 with wins over Moscow, 79-64 on Senior Night at Cottonwood Wednesday, Feb. 11 and at Potlatch, 89-33 Saturday, Feb. 14.
Vs. Moscow
The Pirates celebrated senior night with a 15-point win over Moscow.
Seniors Rhett Schlader, Tanner Ross, Lucas Arnzen, Bryson Higgins and John Mager were honored prior to the game.
As in the first matchup at Moscow, Schlader and Jake Bruner were the big scorers as each had a double-double. Schlader had 23 points and 10 rebounds while Bruner had 18 points and 11 rebounds. Arnzen also scored in double figures with 12 and had a rare (for him anyway) 3-point field goal in the game.
Prairie took a 20-13 lead by the end of the first quarter and led 42-27 at the half.
Moscow came out in the third quarter and trimmed 3 points off the lead, making it 61-49 after 3 quarters. Prairie got those 3 points back in the fourth, outscoring Moscow 18-15 down the stretch.
In addition to the above, Ross scored 9 points, Terran Peery 6, Bryson Higgins 4, Mager 3, and Calvin Hinkelman and Brandon Higgins 2 each.
Bruner added 7 assists while Schlader had 5.
The win completed Prairie’s second straight perfect record at home at 9-0. They have now won 20 straight at home since a Jan. 24, 2013 home loss to Genesee.
The JV team edged the Bears 50-48.

At Potlatch
Bruner scored a career high-28 points and hit 12 of 14 shots from the field to lead the Pirates to a rout of the Loggers.Terran Peery comes up with a steal at Potlatch. Also shown are John Mager, Calvin Hinkelman and Rhett Schlader.
And he did all those in about 2 quarters of playing time as the Prairie subs picked up about half the playing time in the rout.
Bruner scored 10 of Prairie’s first 12 points as Prairie jumped out to a 14-3 lead.
Bruner wound up with 15 points in the opening quarter which included a dunk after a steal and a 3-pointer as he was 7 for 8 from the field.
Prairie led 26-11 at the end of the period.
Schlader and Hinkelman scored 7 points each in the second quarter as Prairie pushed their lead to 53-30 at the half.
Prairie opened the second quarter with a 15-0 run which concluded a 23-0 run that spanned the quarter break.
Potlatch’s one highlight of the game came at the end of the half as sophomore guard Devin Richards sank a 40-footer just before the buzzer.
That buzzer-beater didn’t give them any kind of momentum into the second half though as Prairie opened the third quarter with a 21-0 run and outscored the Loggers 26-3 in the quarter.
Bruner added 11 more points, 9 of them on 3-pointers as he was 4 for 4 from beyond the arc in the game.
When Bruner left the game with just under 4 minutes left in the quarter he had outscored the Loggers 28-20 all by himself.
Bench players got all the playing time in the running clock fourth quarter and still managed to play even with the Loggers as each team added 10 points.
The only real excitement in the fourth quarter was the Potlatch head coach, JR Buffington, picking up a pair of technical fouls in the final 2:30 of the game. That means he was unable to be on the sidelines for Potlatch’s play-in District game against Clearwater Valley on Monday.
In addition to Bruner’s big game, Schlader scored 16 points. Peery scored 11, Hinkelman 10, Ross 7, Brandon Higgins 6, Arnzen 4, Mager 3, Bryson Higgins 2 and Devin Bruegeman and Justin Schumacher 1 each as everyone on the roster scored.
Prairie dominated the boards 37-19 with Bruner pulling down 9 and Mager 7.
Peery had 5 steals while Schlader had 4 steals and 6 assists.
Lucas Arnzen puts up a jump shot at Potlatch.Prairie was 31 for 53 from the field, 58%, and 21 for 36 at the line, also 58%. Potlatch was 12 for 40 from the field, 30%, and 4 for 9 at the line, 44%.
Prairie ends their regular season with their second straight perfect 12-0 record in league and are 18-2 overall.
The JV game was just as one-sided as the varsity game as the JV’s finished their season wit a 68-24 rout of the Loggers.
Prairie came out with their press and allowed Potlatch just 7 first quarter shots as they forced 11 turnovers on their way to a 29-0 start to the game.
Brandon Higgins and Hunter Chaffee did most of the scoring damage in that run with 12 and 11 points respectively.
Potlatch finally got on the board with a pair of free throws at the 2:26 mark.  Prairie led 33-4 at the end of the period.
Subs played the entire second quarter and were outscored by Potlatch 12-15 as Prairie still led 45-19 at the half. Ryan Glimp and Nick Mager each scored 4 in the quarter.
The starters came back on in the third quarter and even without the press, outscored Potlatch 16-4 in the quarter as Chaffee, Higgins and Brandon Anderson scored 4 points each in the quarter.
The fourth quarter saw Prairie outscore Potlatch 7-1 under a running clock.
Chaffee wound up with 18 points to lead the team in scoring with Higgins adding 16. Luke Wemhoff scored 8 with Tyson Schlader and Glimp adding 6 each. Anderson and Mager scored 4 each while Justin Schumacher, Devin Bruegeman and Noah Arnzen added 2 each.
Prairie outrebounded Potlatch 40-25 with Schlader, Anderson and Bruegeman grabbing 5 each to lead the team.
Anderson had 4 steal and Higgins had 3 steals and 7 assists. Schlader added 4 assists.
The JV’s were 31 for 59 from the field, 53%, and 2- for 7 at the line, 29%. Potlatch was 10 for 41 from the field, 24%, and 3 for 12 at the line, 25%.
