The Prairie Baseball team split their first two games this season and had 2 more postponed due to weather. They opened the season with a shutout loss at Asotin and followed that up with a league win at Clearwater Valley. The games at Kamiah and Kendrick were called off due to weather. The game was called after 4½ innings on the 10-run mercy rule. Starting pitcher Devin Bruegeman gave up 3 runs in the opening inning and Terran Peery struggled in the second as Asotin scored 12 runs. Errors by the defense did not help Peery out any. Daniel Mager came on to get out of the inning and John Mager came on in the third and blanked the Panthers for 2 innings. Bruegeman again started and pitched all 7 innings to get the win, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits. The four runs scored in the final two innings when he was tiring. Prairie got on the scoreboard for the first time this season in the first inning when Bruegeman drew a 1 out walk, went to second on a passed ball and to third on a wild pitch. He scored on Prairie’s first hit of the season, a single up the middle by Calvin Hinkelman. Prairie added 3 more runs in the third. Jayce Perrin was hit by a pitch leading off the inning. Nick Mager followed with a walk and Jake Bruner singled to right center. Perrin was tagged out at the plate. John Mager singled to right to load the bases. Nick Mager scored on Dereck Arnzen’s walk. Bruner scored on Peery’s sacrifice fly to right and John Mager scored when the pitcher and second baseman collided as they were going after Bruegeman’s short fly ball. C.V. scored twice in the sixth to cut the lead to 4-2 but Prairie answered with 6 runs in the top of the seventh. C.V. added 2 more in the bottom of the seventh but their rally fell short. Prairie pounded out a dozen hits led by Hinkelman who had 2 doubles and a single. Bruner came up with 4 singles while John Mager had a pair of singles. Pirates compete at Battle of the Border Four Prairie players and both head coaches participated in the Battle at the Border All-Star Basketball Games held last Tuesday, March 17 at Clarkston High School. Kayla Schumacher competed on the Idaho girls team that won their game 62-57. Schumacher was the second leading scorer with 12 points behind Lewiston’s Calli Moscrip who had 15. Lori Mader and Lapwai’s Eric Spencer were the coaches. Rhett Schlader, Tanner Ross and Lucas Arnzen were part of the Idaho boys team that got beat 74-84 by the Washington team. Schlader scored 2 points, Ross 4 and Arnzen 8. Ross won the boys slam dunk contest just like he had in the District 2 game. Teel Bruner was one of the boys team coaches.
