have tough week
The Prairie baseball team had a tough week, playing 5 games and losing all of them. They lost league games to C.V. and Troy, both at Cottonwood and lost all 3 games played at the Glenns Ferry Wooden Bat Tournament. 
Prairie scored first in the bottom of the second when Terran Peery was hit by a pitch leading off the inning. He wound up at third on a botched pickoff attempt and scored when John Mager reached on an error on an infield grounder. C.V. tied it in the top of the third on a double and a single but Prairie tied it again in the bottom of the third. Devin Bruegeman reached on an error. He stole second and wound up scoring when the catcher’s throw went into centerfield and the centerfielder didn’t back up the play like he should have. C.V. took their first lead of the game in the sixth on 2 walks and 2 singles that led to 2 runs and made that stand up for the win. Brandon Anderson had a pair of singles for the Pirates while Bruegeman added a single. Bruegeman pitched all 7 innings and allowed 3 runs on 7 hits with 2 walks and 10 strikeouts. Mager started the game for Prairie and shut out the Dragons for four innings
then ran into trouble in the fifth giving up 3 walks and 2 singles worth
4 runs. Bruegeman came on in the sixth to try and finish off a 5-4 win
but struggled as he gave up 4 singles and 2 walks with 2 errors contributing
to the scoring as Malad rallied to win.
Prairie got off to a good start as Bruegeman walked to lead of the game. Peery followed with a bunt single. Anderson reached on an error with Bruegeman scoring and Peery was able to score on a passed ball for a 2-0 Prairie lead. In the third Anderson again reached on an error and Calvin Hinkelman followed with a double to left center to make it 3-0. Malad took the lead with their 4 run fifth but Prairie came back in the bottom of the inning. Peery looped a single into right and stole second. Anderson and Hinkelman walked but Peery got picked off third. Jace Perrin drew a walk to reload the bases and Nick Mager singled up the middle to score both Anderson and Hinkelman to give Prairie a 5-4 lead. At that point Malad changed pitchers and the reliever got them out of the inning and got the side out in order in the bottom of the sixth with the game ending on time limit. Prairie had 7 hits with Peery and Nick Mager each collecting a pair of singles. Hinkelman had a double while Bruegeman and John Mager each added a single. Nick Mager had 2 RBI while Hinkelman and Anderson each had 1. Daniel Mager gave up 4 runs on 4 hits with 6 walks and 3 strikeouts in 5 innings. Prairie again got off to a good start as Bruegeman walked to lead off the game. Peery reached on an error with Bruegeman going to third. A short popup to first resulted in a double play. Hinkelman then walked and he moved all the way to third on a passed ball as Bruegeman scored. Nick Mager then singled to left to score Hinkelman. Wendell’s pitcher settled down after that and didn’t give up any more runs. Wendell meanwhile tied the game with single runs in the third and fourth innings. In the fifth Prairie faced a new pitcher and Nick Mager greeted him by beating out an infield hit. A groundout moved him up and John Mager walked. Bryson Higgins then hit into a fielder’s choice with Nick Mager getting caught in a rundown as John Mager moved to third and Higgins to second. Dereck Arnzen then swung at a ball in the dirt for strike three but was able to beat the throw to first as the catcher, after retrieving the ball was more worried about John Mager coming into score than getting Arnzen at first. That put Prairie up 3-2. In the top of the sixth Prairie added a couple of insurance runs as Peery walked and Anderson reached on error. A passed ball advanced the runners and they both scored on Hinkelman’s single to left to give Prairie a 5-2 lead. Unfortunately Bruegeman, who had pitched the first 6 innings hit his innings limit when you added in the inning he pitched the day before. Jace Perrin was put in to try and hold the lead and faced four batters without getting an out. The defense didn’t help him out any as after a walk and a single he had a tailor-made double play ball to second but an error on the play left all runners safe. John Mager was then brought in and after walking in a run to cut the lead to 5-4, a fly ball to center was dropped that would have ended the game in Prairie’s favor but wound up tying the game. Another walk forced in the winning run. Prairie had 4 hits in the game. Nick Mager had a pair of singles and an RBI, Perrin had a double and Hinkelman had a 2 RBI single. Bruegeman gave up 3 runs on 4 hits with 1 walk and 6 strikeouts. Perrin gave up 4 runs on 1 hit with a walk and a hit batsman. John Mager faced 3 batters with no hits and 2 walks. John Mager started and didn’t have any more luck than he did in the final inning against Wendell. It was mostly control problems as he walked 4 of the 7 batters he faced and the only out came on a sacrifice. Peery came on in relief and struck out the first batter he faced then gave up 2 walks, a single and a triple as the Pilots scored 8 first inning runs. Prairie got out of the inning when the third runner to score on a bases loaded triple was called out for missing third base. Prairie was able to answer with a run in the second as Hinkelman led off with a double down the left field line. Nick Mager followed with an infield hit and Perrin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. John Mager grounded to short for a fielder’s choice but picked up an RBI as Hinkelman scored. Perrin was sent to the mound to start the second inning and gave up a walk and a single before getting a strikeout. A walk loaded the bases and then Perrin induced a potential double play ball but as in the Malad game, an error on the toss from the second baseman to the shortstop led to everyone being safe with a run scoring. Another run scored on a bases loaded walk. Perrin got out of the inning with a pair of forceouts, the first at home plate. Anderson pitched the third inning and despite an error, single and walk, got out of the inning with no runs scoring. He went out again for the fourth inning and didn’t fare as well as he walked 4 batters, hit another and gave up a bloop single. That led to 3 runs scoring as the Pilots took a 1-13 lead. Glenns Ferry subbed in a new pitcher for the fifth inning and Prairie was able to put some runs on the board. After an out, Bruegeman and Peery each walked. Anderson hit a grounder to short that was botched for an error with Bruegeman scoring. Hinkelman then grounded to third for another error as two more runs scored. The game was called after that half inning on the time limit. Prairie had 4 hits in the game, a double each by Hinkelman and Anderson and a single each from Nick Mager and Kevin Tillinghast. For Tillinghast we believe that was his first varsity hit. Against Prairie’s 4 pitchers Glenns Ferry had just 6 hits but took advantage of 16 free passes and 3 errors.
