The Prairie baseball team broke their 5 game losing streak with a win over Kamiah and wound up winning 4 of 6 games this past week. All were league games. Vs. Kamiah
Prairie broke their 6 game losing streak with a 10-0 win over Kamiah in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday, April 16 at Cottonwood and then pulled out a 32-30 win in a second game that was definitely not for lovers of pitching and defense.
Game 1
Devin Bruegeman tossed a 2-hit shutout in the opening game of the doubleheader that had been rescheduled from Tuesday, April 14 due to snow.
Bruegeman dominated the Kubs allowing just 2 singles and 4 walks with 6 strikeouts. Only 1 runner got as far as second base for the KubsCatcher Brandon Anderson catches a popup against Kamiah. At left is pitcher Devin Bruegeman..
Meanwhile the Prairie offense broke out of their doldrums with 9 hits and 10 runs. Bruegeman led off the game with a single to left. Terran Peery followed with a perfectly placed bunt single. Brandon Anderson walked to load the bases. Calvin Hinkelman also walked to force home Bruegeman with the game’s first run. Jace Perrin grounded into a forceout but picked up an RBI as Peery scored. Anderson wound up making it 3-0 when he scored on a wild pitch.
Prairie added 2 more in the second inning as Dereck Arnzen reached on a dropped popup by the second baseman. He went to second on an errant pickoff throw and scored on Bruegeman’s flare into short right field. Bruegeman advanced to second on a balk, went to third on Peery’s groundout and scored on Anderson’s single to left.
Perrin led off the third with a single to left and went to second when the leftfielder let the ball get by him. John Mager grounded out with Perrin going to third and Perrin scored on Jake Bruner’s fly ball out to right.
In the fourth the Pirates made it a 10-run margin with 4 more runs. After an out, Bruegeman doubled to the wall in right center. Peery single to left to score Bruegeman. Peery stole second and went to third on a passed ball. Anderson drew a walk and Hinkelman tripled over the left fielder’s head to score both runners. Hinkelman then scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-0.
When Bruegeman struck out the side after a leadoff walk, Prairie had a win on the 10-run mercy rule.
Bruegeman also led the hit paraded with a double and 2 singles and an RBI. Peery had a pair of singles and an RBI. Hinkelman had a triple and 3 RBI. Perrin had a single and an RBI and John Mager had a single. Bruner added an RBI.

Game 2
In the second game both teams scored at least 1 run in each of the 6 innings played with each team also scoring at least 10 runs in an inning. Prairie did it twice.
Calvin Hinkelman rounds second and head for third with a triple in the first Kamiah game. He hit for the cycle in the second game.Kamiah was the home team so Prairie got to bat first and took advantage of 7 errors, 2 walks, a hit batsman and just 2 hits to score 6 runs and 10 batters came to the plate. Hinkelman and Bruner each had a single in the inning while Bruegeman (twice) and Peery each reached on errors and Anderson and Arnzen each walked. Kevin Tillinghast was hit by a pitch. Bruegeman, Peery, Anderson, Hinkelman, Arnzen and Tillinghast each scored a run.
Kamiah answered with 2 runs without benefit of a hit as Bruner struggled to find the plate walking 3 batters. A muffed fly ball in right scored both runs in the 2-out bases loaded situation.
Prairie added a run in the second as Anderson walked, stole second and scored on Perrin’s single to left. John Mager followed with a single and Arnzen walked to load the bases but Prairie stranded all 3 runners.
Kamiah answered with a run on a 2-out walk, wild pitch and run scoring single.
In the third Prairie came up with their first big innings as they sent 16 hitters to the plate and scored 10 runs and still managed to leave the bases loaded as the inning ended.
Kamiah changed pitchers at the start of the inning and he started out with 4 consecutive walks. Bruner walked to lead off and Bruegeman followed. A double steal was attempted with Bruner scoring as Bruegeman was caught for an out. Peery and Anderson followed with walks and Hinkelman doubled to dead center to score both runners. Perrin walked and Mager singled home Hinkelman. Arnzen walked to load the bases and Daniel Mager, pinchhitting for Tillinghast, walked to force in Perrin. Bruner reach on an error with John Mager scoring. Arnzen scored when Bruegeman forced Bruner at second. Peery and Anderson both walked to force home Tillinghast, who had reentered to run for Daniel Mager. Hinkelman then singled to left to score Bruegeman and Peery to make it 17-3, which at the time looked like a safe lead.
The long inning got to Bruner, who had settled down in the second after a rough first inning. Bruner walked 3 and gave up a single to start the bottom of the third. Perrin then came on in relief and got a pair of quick outs before giving up 4 straight singles as Kamiah wound up scoring 7 to cut a seemingly safe 14-run lead down to 17-10.
Kamiah trotted in their third pitcher of the game and he had better success getting 2 quick outs before giving up a single to Bruner, who went all the way to third when the centerfielder let the ball get by. Bruner then scored on a balk to make it 18-7.This Kamiah runner is out by a mile as 2nd baseman Jace Perrin waits with the ball on a steal attempt.
After some success in the third, Perrin struggled in the fourth. Kamiah had 13 straight batters reach base before Perrin was able to record an out. The out came on a short fly ball to center that Bruner fielded on the bounce and threw to Bruegeman at second for a forceout. The 12th run of the inning scored on that play. Perrin then got out of the inning when Bruegeman fielded a short fly by at shortstop and doubled off the runner at first. With their outburst Kamiah had taken an 18-22 lead.
This time it was the Kamiah pitcher’s turn to be affected by a long inning on offense as Prairie’s first 7 hitters in the fifth all reached base and scored. Anderson led off with an infield single and stole second. Hinkelman followed with a triple to deep center to score Anderson. Perrin singled home Hinkelman. John Mager singled and Arnzen walked to load the bases. Bryson Higgins, in for Tillinghast, walked to force in a run. Bruner singled up the middle to score 2 more runs and went to second on the throw home. After an out, Peery doubled home Higgins with Bruner going to third as he had to hold up to make sure the ball wasn’t caught. After a second out, Hinkelman walked to load the bases. Perrin singled home Bruner and three straight walks to Mager, Arnzen and Higgins brought home 3 more runs to make it 28-22.
Anderson replaced Perrin on the mound and gave up 3 straight hits before getting a fielder’s choice for an out. Another hit followed then 2 straight errors that cut the lead to 28-27. A walk followed then the second out. A 2-run single gave Kamiah a 28-29 lead before Anderson got out of the inning with a strikeout.
Prairie faced another new pitcher to start the sixth with Bruegeman beating out an infield hit to start things off. Peery followed with a double to right with Bruegeman having to hold up at third. Anderson doubled to left to score 2 runs and give Prairie a 30-29 lead. Hinkelman then hit a long fly ball to deep right center that apparently hit one of the heating units next to the school building and bounced back into the field. At first it appeared he had a double but after the umpires discussed what they saw it was ruled a 2-run homer giving Prairie a 32-29 lead.
For the bottom of the 6th Prairie put Bruegeman on the mound as he still had 2 innings of availability.
He gave up a leadoff walk then got an out. A single to right plus an error on the play scored a run but then Bruegeman got a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.
They tried to start the seventh inning but after the second baseman lost a fly ball the game was called due to darkness with Prairie getting the win.
Anderson wound up as the winning pitcher with Bruegeman adding a save to his earlier win.
