School Board meets
Bus routes and a couple of new hires were approved at the August meeting of the school board Monday, August 17.
The bus routes for the 2015-16 school year were approved and are printed below.
A couple of resignations opened the way for the new hires. Jessica Vanderwall took a position in Grangeville and Kristi Bruegeman was moved from the Kindergarten position to take her place. Ashle’ Long was then approved for hire as the new Kindergarten teacher.
Amy Sigler resigned to take a position with the State Dept. of Education and Cheri Holthaus was approved for hire to fill her position as Administrative Assistant at the Prairie Jr./Sr. High.
Also approved was the resignation of the Center for Discovery Aide. This position is being advertised.
Also approved were the district and school handbooks, the Elementary and Jr./Sr. High schedules and the districts CIPA regulations. CIPA regulations deal with student access to the Internet and are a state requirement.
In the facilities update Superintendent Rene’ Forsmann said the high school roof upgrade has been delayed and may not get finished until sometime in September.
Avista’s work on the 3-phase power project has also been delayed due to Avista crews working on the fires in restoring electricity. They still hope to get this finished by the start of school.
Projects completed are the heating upgrade at the high school shop building and the BST upgrade at the Elementary School Parking Lot.
The new Blue Ribbon School sign and the state championships sign are expected to go up this week.
Also completed is the railing on the walkway to the Elementary Library.
In the administrative reports, Carrie Nygaard reported the FFA was involved in leadership retreat and have installed new officers. They are also growing a pumpkin patch  at the school. This is for agricultural education and eventually the pumpkins will be sold as a fundraiser.
She reported Prairie High School was recognized as a School of Excellence by the IHSAA. In addition Prairie received an Award of Excellence for sportsmanship as none of the coaching staff received a technical throughout the year.
The back to school sports meeting went well.
Eggen Signs is making a sign just like the one that will be posted near the football field that will hang in the gym showing all the state champions. They are also making new business sponsorship signs that are somewhat smaller than the ones they’ve had.
Glenn Poxleitner has a group of students that will run crosscountry. This will be a totally volunteer sport that will be funded by the families involved.
Forsmann noted that new custodian Denise Mager is busy getting the school ready for students and staff.
The Elementary open house is set for Thursday, August 27 at 6 p.m.
The Elementary staff will again provide a security and cleanup crew for the Idaho County Fair.
In her superintendent’s report Forsmann noted they have 48 open enrollment students and have had to turn a few away for a variety of reasons. Most are coming from either Craigmont or Grangeville.
She noted that for the most part Prairie students scored better than the state averages on the SBAC test.
She also wanted to thank Jerry and Janet Richardson for painting the football ticket booth.
The meeting adjourned to an executive session at 7:45 p.m. The next regular meeting will be Monday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.
