Pirates football opener is Friday
There are 31 players turned out for the Prairie football team this season with 12 of them being seniors.
Returning seniors are Isaiah Shears, Devin Bruegeman, Terran Peery, Jake Bruner, Calvin Hinkelman, Daniel Mager, Brandon Higgins, Bobby Hood, Justin Schumacher, Philip Spencer and Hunter Hasselstrom. Also a senior is Summit student Thomas Schwartz, who did not play last year.
There are 6 juniors: Tyson Schlader, Lucas Wemhoff, Brandon Anderson, Raice Dalgliesh, Ryan Glimp and Noah Arnzen.
There are 5 sophomores: Jace Perrin, Nick Mager, Hunter Chaffee, Jayce Huling and Dereck Arnzen.
There are 8 freshmen: Spencer Schumacher, Caleb McWilliams, James Rainwater, Carson Schmidt, Dylon Schumacher, Devin Ross, Michael Schwartz and Will Wimer.
Prairie is a little bit banged up as Shears and Peery may miss the first 3-4 games but the outlook is good for the defending state champions despite a heavy loss to graduation.
State player of the year Jake Bruner is back to lead the offense. Peery was likely the first choice for starting tailback but is out for several games with an injury. Shears, an all-state player at both wide receiver and linebacker is also out for 3 or 4 games after some cleanup surgery on the knee he injured in last year’s state playoffs. Hinkelman, who was projected to be the starting fullback, may get more carries with Peery out with juniors Brandon Anderson and Lucas Wemhoff also filling in.
Bruegeman may be the #1 passing target until Shears returns.
With the injuries it’s fortunate that most of the league heavyweights are towards the end of the season on the schedule. Genesee, their opening opponent this Friday at Cottonwood, is coming off an 8-0 win over Kendrick. After Genesee, Prairie has two non-league home games against Salmon River and Council before getting back into the league schedule with C.V., Lapwai, Troy, Potlatch and Kamiah.
Again this year 4 White Pine League teams plus Wallace will make it to the state playoffs. The first place team will host Wallace while the other 3 league teams will play against southern Idaho opponents in the first round with the higher seed hosting first round games.
