beat Lapwai by 40
What was supposed to be a competitive game quickly turned in the Prairie Pirates favor as the Pirates beat Lapwai 60-20 at Cottonwood Friday, Oct. 2. Lapwai received the opening kickoff and was forced to punt. 
Prairie took over at their own 30 and gained just 2 yards on the first two plays. On the third play quarterback Jake Bruner hit a wide open Isaiah Shears down the right side and the pair hooked up for a 68 yard scoring play. The two point pass play went incomplete with Prairie taking a 6-0 lead. Lapwai got a 41 yard kickoff return to set them up at the Prairie 41 but wound up turning the ball over on downs at the 35. Two plays later Shears appeared headed for another long score but was pushed just enough by a Lapwai defender that he stepped on the sideline after a 22 yard gain to the Lapwai 42. Four running plays netted 26 yards to move the ball to the 16. After an incomplete pass, Bruner found Calvin Hinkelman open on a little swing pass to the left side and Hinkelman took it to the end zone. Hinkelman then ran in the 2 pointer to give Prairie a 14-0 lead. Lapwai put together their first drive of the game with a pair of first downs plus a pass interference penalty setting them up at the Prairie 15. Prairie then sacked Lapwai quarterback Courage Lone Bear on consecutive plays with Shears getting the first and Bruner the second on a safety blitz. That pushed the Wildcats back to the 37. An intentional grounding penalty to avoid another sack and a false start penalty had Lapwai punting from the 48. Prairie was stopped on the ensuing possession for the only time in the first half as Bruner’s fourth down pass fell incomplete. Lapwai turned the ball right back as their fourth down pass also fell incomplete. Prairie took over on their own 42. A holding penalty on third and 4 set them back to the 38 but Bruner found Shears open on a misdirection pass out to the left as it appeared the play was going to the right. Shears gained 36 yards to the Lapwai 26. On third and 1 from the 17, Bruner passed downfield to Brandon Higgins who caught the ball at the 8, shook off a Lapwai hit just as he caught the ball and took the ball in for the score. Hinkelman added the 2-pointer to make it 22-0. A sack for an 8 yard loss by Brandon Anderson led to another Lapwai punt and a bad snap to the punter saw Prairie take over at the Lapwai 24. three plays later Bruner kept the ball on the option around the right side and went 22 yards for a touchdown. He passed to Shears for the 2-pointer to make it 30-0. Lapwai got a 37 yard kickoff return to the Prairie 42 but Saveon Henry fumbled at the Prairie 49 with Bruner being right there to scoop up the ball and take it 51 yards for another touchdown, just 31 seconds after the previous score.  Another
pass to Shears for the 2-pointer and Prairie was up 38-0.
Prairie tried an onside kick but Lapwai recovered and returned the ball to the Prairie 44. On fourth down and 10 at the 33, Justin Schumacher recovered a bad snap for the Pirates at the 35. A quick out to Shears gained 23 yards. Bruner then picked up 27 on a keeper around right rend. Finally Bruner connected with Hinkelman over the middle for 15 yards and the touchdown. The 2-point try came up short as Prairie took a 44-0 lead with 2:42 still left in the half. At that point Lapwai’s offense had generated just 9 total yards. Lapwai put together a final drive of the half but ran out of time at the Prairie 27. Prairie received the second half kickoff and set up at their own 39. On third and 8, Bruner connected with Shears on a short pass to the left side. Shears maneuvered his way downfield and picked up a key block from Wemhoff at about the 20 that led to a 59 yard scoring play. Hinkelman ran in the 2-pointer as Prairie went up 52-0 and sent the game into running clock mode. Lapwai came back with their first scoring drive of the game and their only one against the first team defense as they went 74 yards in 11 plays, more than doubling their entire first half yardage total. To give Prairie credit though, they had backed off on the furious pass rush that had led to 4 sacks in the first half. Prairie gave the ball right back to the Wildcats on a fumble and the Wildcats got down to the Prairie 12 before the Pirates ramped up the pass rush again and sacked the quarterback twice in 3 plays to give Prairie back the ball at the 27. On the first play after the change of possession, Bruner hit Hinkelman down the left side for 45 yards. He passed to Devin Bruegeman over the middle for 10 to move the ball to the 18. Two running plays set up a third and inches at the 8 and Bruner ran a keeper around right end for the touchdown. Wemhoff added the 2-pointer to make it 60-6 with 8:43 left to play. Prairie sent in the JV defense at that point and Lapwai burned them for a 55 yard touchdown. Lapwai then successfully executed an onside kick, getting the ball back at the Prairie 48. One play later they scored again. Anderson recovered another onside kick effort and Prairie’s JV offense was able to run out the rest of the clock. For the game Prairie gained 135 yards rushing and 335 passing. Bruner had 7 carries for 78 yards to lead the rushing attack and Wemhoff added 38 yards on 8 carries. Bruner complete 12 of 17 passes for 319 yards with Spencer Schumacher completing 1 of 2 for 16 yards. Shears caught 6 passes for 210 yards. Hinkelman caught 3 for 76. Bruegeman caught 2 for 16, Higgins 1 for 17 and Caleb McWilliams 1 for 16. Lapwai gained just 12 yards rushing on 34 attempts and added 263 passing. Lapwai quarterbacks completed 17 of 25 attempts. Defensively Prairie was led by Hinkelman who had 13 tackles and 1½ sacks. Bruner added 11 tackles, 2 sacks and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Anderson had 6½ tackles plus a sack. Shears had 4½ tackles and 2 sacks. Jayce Huling had 4 tackles. Bruegeman had 3½ tackles. Higgins had 2½ tackles. Bobby Hood had 1 tackle and ½ a sack. McWilliams, Raice Dalgliesh, Wemhoff and Philip Spencer each had 1 tackle and Justin Schumacher had a fumble recovery. With their 17th win in a row Prairie is now 5-0 on the season and 3-0 in league play.
