Pirates rout Wallace, Oakley next
A matchup between two teams with a combined 1 loss on the season turned out to be a total mismatch as the Prairie Pirates routed Wallace 72-6 in a state playoff game Friday, Oct. 30 at Cottonwood.Brandon Anderson is about to get past a Wallace defender being blocked by an unidentified Pirate for a long touchdown run. #75 is Philip Spencer and #11 is Jake Bruner. With the win Prairie will play Oakley Friday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow.
Prairie received the opening kickoff and needed just 6 plays to score the game’s first points. They started at their own 31 and picked up 13 yards on a pair of running plays. Terran Peery picked up the first down with a 9 yard run and Wallace was hit with a facemask penalty on the tackle which added 15 more yards and put Prairie on the Wallace 41.
Two more runs by Prairie resulted in 12 yards and another first down at the 16. Quarterback Jake Bruner ran a keeper on the next play for the touchdown. Calvin Hinkelman ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-0.
Wallace’s ensuing possession resulted in 2 running plays getting stopped for loss and an incomplete pass. They punted from their own 10. Brandon Anderson fielded the 23 yard punt at the Wallace 33 and lateraled to Bruner who was heading in the opposite direction and wound up going the distance for his second touchdown of the game. Bruner passed to Isaiah Shears for the 2-pointer to make it 16-0 just 3:28 into the game.
Wallace’s 3 plays on offense all went for loss and they were forced to punt again with Prairie taking over at the Wallace 41.

On Wallace’s next possession they finally got a positive yardage play on a 9 yard pass completion that set up fourth and 3. They decided to go for it on fourth down and the pass fell incomplete as Prairie took over at the Wallace 37.
Peery gained 20 yards on the first play to move the ball to the 17. A couple of penalties set Prairie back to the 28 but Bruner then found Shears open for a 28-yard touchdown. Bruner then passed to Shears for the 2-pointer to make it 32-0 with 3 minutes still left in the first quarter.
A holding penalty forced Wallace to punt again with Prairie taking over at their own 45 after a 5 yard return by Anderson.
Prairie faced a third and 3 from the Wallace 48 when Luke Wemhoff was given a chance to run the ball. He made the most of it as he raced 48 yards to the end zone. The 2-point try came up short as Prairie led 38-0 with 22 seconds left in the first quarter.

Wallace had a short free kick that Daniel Mager picked up to the Wallace 38 and returned 12 yards to the 26.

A false start set the Pirates back to their own 48. 3 running plays netted 11 yards setting up fourth and 4 from the Wallace 41. Bruner then picked up 25 yards to set up a first down at the 16. Peery carried the ball twice for 8 yards each to add another Prairie touchdown. The two-point pass attempt fell incomplete with Prairie leading 54-0.
Wallace was forced to punt again with Prairie taking over on their own 41.
Peery gained 32 yards on first down and after an incomplete pass, Wemhoff scored his second touchdown on a 27 yard run. The 2-point pass again fell incomplete to make it 60-0 with 4 minutes still to go in the half.
On Wallace’s first play after the kickoff Brandon Higgins intercepted a pass at the Wallace 42. On the next play Anderson went 42 yards for another Prairie touchdown. The 2-point pass again failed leaving Prairie with a 66-0 lead.
Wallace finally got on the scoreboard on the kickoff return as they ran it back 87 yards for a touchdown to make it 66-6.
Wallace’s kickoff went out of bounds giving Prairie the ball at their own 35. Bruner connected with Bruegeman for 63 yards with Bruegeman caught at the 2 yard line. Jayce Huling ran it in on the next play to make it 72-6 with 2:32 left in the first half.
Wallace finally got a first down on their next possession thanks to a Prairie penalty. They got one finally on offense 2 plays later on an 11 yard pass completion to midfield. They didn’t get any farther as Justin Schumacher sacked the quarterback for a 10 yard loss on the next play and a fumble ended the half.

The two teams traded possessions, each turning the ball over on downs.
On Prairie’s final possession they were able to run out the clock.

Hunter Chaffee, Bruner, Jayce Perrin and Nick Mager had 1 each.
Prairie is now 9-0 on the season and have racked up 21 straight wins.
The déjà vu state tournament run continues as they face Oakley in the second round in the Kibbie Dome for the second straight year. If they win that one they will get a new third round opponent in either Raft River or Notus. They would have to travel south for that matchup.
