26 turn out for boys basketball
The Prairie boys basketball team has their biggest turnout of players since before Teel Bruner took over as head coach with 26.
Prairie has won the last two state championships but have just 1 starter returning from last year’s team, senior Jake Bruner. Senior Terran Peery, who served as sixth man last year, and fellow senior Calvin Hinkelman are the only other returning players to see much playing time last season. Senior Brandon Higgins was a swing player last year between the JV and varsity and juniors Tyson Schlader, Luke Wemhoff, Brandon Anderson, Ryan Glimp and sophomore Hunter Chaffee were district tournament call-ups.
Another senior saw a lot of playing time last year but Thomas Schwartz got his playing time with Summit Academy last season.
Rounding out the squad is senior Isaiah Shears, who saw playing time as a sophomore on the varsity but missed all of last season with a knee injury.
Practicing with the varsity Monday evening was freshman Spencer Schumacher. Coach Bruner said he will play JV to start the year but he can see him being moved up later on.
Despite the roster turnover the White Pine League coaches see Prairie as finishing 2nd behind Lapwai. Lapwai, who took second to Prairie at state last year returns nearly everyone although they may be without Imani Mitchell all year due to a knee injury. Genesee looks like they may battle Prairie for second. C.V. could be a surprise contender as they lost just one player to graduation and apparently have a transfer in who is supposed to be a very good player.
In addition to Spencer Schumacher the JV roster includes juniors Grant Gehring, Todd Ott and Noah Arnzen, sophomores Luke Schwartz, Nick Mager, Anthony Karel and Brayden Wood and a whole bunch of freshmen: Dylan Schumacher, Devin Ross, Tayler Ott, Carson Schmidt, Michael Schwartz, Tanner Hibbard and Ray Zhang.
With that many players turned out there has been a couple of C games added (see below) and others may be added later.
Assistant coaches again this year are Kevin Chaffee, Scot Schlader and Pat Holthaus.

Prairie varsity players take part in a ballhandling drill as they dribble two basketballs each. Dribbling from left are Spencer Schumacher, Jake Bruner and Thomas Schwartz. Ryan Glimp, Terran Peery and Calvin Hinkelman wait their turn with the balls. Coach Teel Bruner can be seen behind Hinkelman.
Brandon Anderson tries a reverse lay-up as Brandon Higgins watches during Monday’s boys varsity practice.
