Schwartz receives honorable mention is statewide essay contest
The Idaho Forest Products Commission announces winners of the annual Forest Products Week Essay Contest. For their outstanding writing efforts, five Idaho students will receive a certificate and cash awards for themselves, plus $100 for their classrooms.
Winning essayists are Taylor Ailport, Colter Cates and Walker Rief of Selle Valley Carden School in Sandpoint; Natalie Ketcheson of Genesee School; and Isaac Mings of Deary High School. Teachers of these young writers are, respectively, Melissa Peck, Stacy Rief, Monte Sams and Stacie Reid.
First Honorable Mention was awarded to Olivia Graf of Falls Valley Elementary School in Idaho Falls.
Honorable Mentions included Mary Schwartz of Prairie Elementary School in Cottonwood in the 3rd-5th grade division.
In their essays, elementary students shared how forest products touch their lives, and secondary students wrote about whether using Idaho wood for building is a good environmental and economic choice.“Having sponsored this competition for a number of years, it’s been interesting to see students’ perspectives change over time -- about our forests, their renewability and their importance to young people’s lives, today and in the future.  Students have a fascinating point of view on this plentiful resource in their backyards,” said IFPC Director, Betty Munis.
The winning essays will be posted soon at www.idahoforests.org/essay_contest.htm.
The Idaho Forest Products Commission provides information and education programs about Idaho’s forests and the forest products sector.
