Football awards given

Prairie football awards were given out last Wednesday, Dec. 9. All but the Pirate awards are voted on by the players.

Pirates named to All-State football team
Several Pirates were named to the Idaho Statesman’s 1-A all-state football team which was announced in this past Sunday’s Statesman.
The 1-A team includes players from both Div. 1 and Div. 2.
Named to the first team offense were Jake Bruner at quarterback, Isaiah Shears at wide receiver and Philip Spencer at offensive lineman.
Named to the first team defense were Bruner at defensive back, Shears at defensive line and Calvin Hinkelman at linebacker. 
Lucas Wemhoff was named second team all-state at defensive back.

Pirates are 1-1 on the week
The Prairie Pirates split a pair of non-league games this past week, losing at home to Asotin, 66-74, on Tuesday, Dec. 8 and then winning at Kendrick 65-48, Thursday, Dec. 10.
The loss to Asotin is the Pirates’ first loss at their home gym since losing to Genesee on Jan. 24, 2013. They had won 19 straight home games in that span.

Asotin got off to a hot start against the Pirates as they opened up leads of 0-6 and 6-14 in the first quarter.

Asotin opened the second quarter with a 2-10 run that extended their lead to 18 points at 17-35. They led by as many as 18 on 3 different occasions, the least time at 40-22 with 2:44 left in the half.
From that point on Prairie started to rally. Jake Bruner got it started by converting a 3-point play. Bruner then fed Brandon Anderson on a basket and Bruner then closed the half with a pair of free throws and a tip-in in the final seconds to cut the lead to 31-40 at the half as Prairie ended the half with a 9-0 run.
Asotin pushed the lead back to 13 in the third quarter and still led 34-46 with 5:43 left in the third when Prairie put another run together.
Calvin Hinkelman scored inside and then added a free throw. Bruner scored on another tip-in to cut the lead to 7. Isaiah Shears scored on a feed from Terran Peery. Peery then scored on a drive to the hoop and Shears cut the lead to 1 with another drive to the hoop. Prairie was down just 45-46 with 2:25 left in the third quarter after an 11-0 run.
Asotin answered with the fifth 3-pointer of the game and scored the final 7 points of the quarter to push the lead to 45-53.
Prairie had just one 3-pointer through the first 3 quarters but went to the long bombs in the fourth to cut into the lead. A 3 by Shears and two more by Hunter Chaffee cut the deficit back down to 3 at 54-57 but that was as close as the Pirates would get. Asotin answered with their own 3-pointer and then connected on 10 of 12 free throws down the stretch to hold off the Pirates.
Prairie wound up hitting six 3-pointers in the final quarter as Peery added 2 and Tyson Schlader 1 as 18 of their 21 fourth quarter points came from long distance.
Bruner wound up with 18 points to lead the Pirates in scoring with Peery and Shears adding 12 points each. Chaffee scored 9 with Hinkelman and Schlader scoring 5 each, Brandon Higgins 3 and Anderson 2.
Isaiah Shears goes for a lay-up against Asotin.Bruner pulled down 24 rebound to lead Prairie to a 54-39 edge on the boards. Shears also had a double-double with 10 rebounds. The rebounding edge wasn’t enough to offset the turnover margin as Prairie had 25 turnovers to just 12 for Asotin.
Bruner added 5 assists and 2 steals while Peery had 3 assists and Higgins had 3 steals.
Prairie was 24 for 63 from the field, 38%, and 11 for 18 at the line, 61%. Asotin was 26 for 71 from the field, 37%, and 15 for 23 at the line, 65%.
In the JV game Prairie broke open a close game with a n 11-0 finish to the first half as they went on to win 62-48.
Prairie jumped out to an 8-2 lead but Asotin came back to take the lead at 13-14. Prairie took back the lead by the end of the period at 17-16.
The Pirates scored the first 7 points of the second quarter, 4 by Spencer Schumacher, but Asotin answered with 6 straight to pull within 2 at 24-22.
Prairie then finished the half with that 11-0 run as Nick Mager scored a 3-pointer and Brandon Anderson scored a pair of baskets. Schumacher and Luke Wemhoff each added a basket as Prairie took a 35-22 lead into the break.
Asotin scored to open the second half but Prairie then scored 6 straight to take a 41-24 lead.
Asotin scored the next 8 to pull within 9 but Prairie ended the third quarter with a 9-2 run to take a 50-34 lead into the final period. Prairie then held on for the win.
Schumacher scored 24 to lead the JV team in scoring with Mager adding 11 points. Anderson scored 8, Wemhoff and Anthony Karel added 6 each with Ryan Glimp scoring 5 and Brayden Wood 2.
Prairie had a 49-40 edge on the boards with Schumacher and Karel each grabbing 9 to lead the team. 
Schumacher, Glimp, Wemhoff and Karel each had 3 steals and Mager had 6 assists while Schumacher had 4 assists.
The JV’s were 25 for 62 from the field, 40%, and 11 for 20 at the line, 56%. Asotin was 16 for 55 from the field, 29%, and 16 for 21 at the line, 76%.
Prairie also won the C game by a score of 53-35.

At Kendrick
The Pirates bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 65-48 win at Kendrick.
Bruner scored a career high 38 points to lead the way. That is the most points scored in a game by a Prairie boys player in a long, long time.
After starting slowly in their previous 2 games, Prairie got off to a strong start this time as they took a 23-9 lead by the end of the first quarter.
They extended the lead to 37-20 by halftime and 54-35 after 3 quarters.
Bruner was 13 for 21 from the field and 9 for 10 at the free throw line and had three 3-pointers among his 13 field goals.
Schlader was Prairie’s second leading scorer with 9 points with Higgins scoring 6, Chaffee 5, Hinkelman 3 and Thomas Schwartz and Peery 2 each.
Chaffee and Schlader had 7 rebounds each while Higgins and Peery had 5 assists each.
Prairie is now 2-1 on the season, all non-league games.
The JV team also won big, 62-29.
