Pirates are 4-0 on the week
The Prairie boys basketball team had their busiest week of the season so far with 4 games scheduled and they won all 4. On Tuesday, Jan. 5 they beat Genesee 67-44 at Cottonwood. On Thursday Jan. 7, also at Cottonwood, they beat Moscow 66-43. On Friday, Jan. 8 they traveled to Kooskia where they beat Clearwater Valley 55-39. Finally on Saturday, Jan. 9, they beat Troy at Cottonwood 72-49. All except the Moscow game were league games.
Vs. Genesee
In the game against Genesee the Bulldogs ad the lead early on but an 11-0 run in the first quarter put Prairie on top for good. Jake Bruner goes high for a jump shot against Genesee. He scored  a total of 85 points in 4 games this past week for the Pirates, an average of 21.25 per game.
Prairie trailed 5-6 when Calvin Hinkelman scored on a feed from Brandon Higgins to put Prairie ahead. Hinkelman then took a feed from Jake Bruner and scored a lay-up and Higgins stole the ball which led to another basket by Hinkelman to make it 11-6.
Tyson Schlader tipped in a missed shot and a steal by Bruner led to a basket by Hunter Chaffee that made it 15-6. Bruner capped off the run by making the first of 2 free throws.
Genesee finally broke their scoring drought that last just over 4 minutes with a pair of free throws. That was answered by a 3-pointer by Schlader. Prairie wound up with a 21-10 lead at the end of the quarter.
Genesee was able to get back within 6 at 27-21 in the second quarter but Prairie closed the half with a 5-2 run to take a 33-23 halftime lead. Bruner wound up scoring 3 points in the final 4 seconds. He made the first of 2 free throws but Genesee committed a foul on the missed second free throw. That led to Bruner scoring on an inbounds play to give Prairie a 0-point lead.
A 7-0 run in the third quarter had Prairie up by 15 at 40-25 and they led 43-30 after 3 quarters. 
Prairie opened the fourth with an 8-0 run that put them up 51-30.
They kept adding to the lead in the fourth with their biggest lead being 26 points on 3 different occasions.
Bruner wound up with 23 points to lead the Pirates in scoring with Schlader adding 11, Hinkelman 10, Terran Peery and Hunter Chaffee 6 each, Isaiah Shears 4, Higgins 3 and Luke Wemhoff and Ryan Glimp 2 each.
Genesee was led by Connor Phillips who had 17 points. He had 14 of these by halftime and with Bruner having no fouls in the first half, he was put on Phillips defensively in the second half and held him scoreless until midway through the fourth quarter.
Prairie had a 38-22 advantage on the board with Bruner grabbing 15 to lead the team.
Bruner and Higgins had 5 assists each and Higgins had 2 steals.
Both teams handled the ball well as Prairie had just 7 turnovers in the game and Genesee had 8.
The Pirates were 28 for 56 from the field, 50%, and 8 for 14 at the line, 57%. Genesee was 16 for 43 from the field, 37%, and 9 for 14 at the line, 64%.
Prairie also won the JV game 48-22.
Genesee led 9-11 at the end of the first quarter but a 13-0 run in the second quarter put Prairie in control. Anthony Karel scored 8 of those 13 points as Prairie took a 24-13 lead.
Genesee scored the final 5 points of the half to cut the lead to 24-18.
Prairie took full control in the third quarter where they shut out Genesee 17-0 to take a 41-18 lead into the final quarter.
Prairie extended the run to 22-0 by scoring the first 5 points of the fourth quarter.
Karel wound up with 15 points to lead the team in scoring with Brandon Anderson and Ryan Glimp adding 8 points each. Spencer Schumacher scored 6, Luke Wemhoff 5 and Dylan Schumacher and Devin Ross 2 each.
Genesee had a 35-37 rebounding edge. Glimp had 8 to lead the Pirates.
Karel had 4 steals while Glimp, Wemhoff and Anderson had 3 each. Nick Mager, Dylan Schumacher and Anderson each had 3 assists.
Prairie was 21 for 55 from the field, 38%, and 6 for 17 at the line, 35%. Genesee was 8 for 44 from the field, 18%, and 3 for 6 at the line, 50%.

Vs. Moscow
In a non-league game at Cottonwood, Prairie broke open a close game with a 23-5 third quarter as they turned a 5 point halftime lead into a 66-43 runaway over Moscow.
Prairie led just 13-10 after one quarter and 30-25 at the half.
Bruner again led the scoring with 20 points and added 6 rebounds and 5 steals. Peery had his best scoring game of the season as he hit 6 of 8 shots and scored 13 points. Schlader scored 9 and had 5 assists while Higgins had 6 assists and 4 points. Chaffee and Brandon Anderson each scored 6 points while Wemhoff scored 5, and Hinkelman 3.
In the JV game Prairie fell in double overtime to Moscow 67-73 while in the C game Moscow won 36-48.

At C.V.
Brandon Higgins managed to avoid drawing an offensive foul as he goes for a lay-up at C.V.In a league game against Clearwater Valley at Kooskia, Prairie finally broke open a close game in the fourth quarter as they switched to a zone defense and outscored the Rams 15-4 for a 55-39 win.
It was a nip-and-tuck game throughout the first half as the lead changed hands 5 times with C.V. leading at the end of both the first quarter, 10-12, and at the half, 24-25.
Bruner got into foul trouble in the first half and was held scoreless with only 1 shot attempt. He went to the bench with 3 fouls with 6:12 left in the second quarter and didn’t return until the third quarter.
Schlader took over the job of guarding C.V.’s Grant Wallace and did an outstanding job while Bruner was on the bench.
Schlader also hit a pair of big 3-pointers in the second quarter to help keep Prairie in the game while Chaffee and Higgins scored 4 each in the quarter.
Prairie led 24-19 with 1:38 left in the half but C.V. ended the half with a 0-6 run to take the lead with Wallace hitting a pair of free throws with just 1 second left to give them the edge.
The third quarter was a scoring duel between Bruner and Wallace with Bruner hitting 5 of 7 shots for 10 points and Wallace 4 of 4 for 8 points for C.V. The difference was Higgins who scored 5 for Prairie as the Pirates took a 40-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
Through 3 quarters C.V. had hit 14 of 25 shots against Prairie’s man defense but the Pirates switched to a 3-2 matchup zone in the fourth and held the Rams to just 2 for 13 shooting in the final period.
C.V. opened the fourth quarter scoring with a basket by Wallace to cut the lead to 3 but Prairie then scored the next 13 straight points.
Chaffee opened the run with a basket from just inside the 3-point line. Peery then tossed an alley-oop pass to Bruner for a lay-up. Bruner then tipped in his own missed shot to make it 46-37. Chaffee then hit from the baseline on a feed from Bruner. A steal by Bruner led to a driving lay-up by Peery. 
On two consecutive inbounds plays against C.V.’s press, Bruner took a long inbounds pass and appeared headed for either a dunk, or at least a lay-up and got fouled both times by Wallace. Bruner made 1 of 2 free throws each time. Higgins finished off the 13-0 run with another free throw.
Bruner wound up as Prairie’s leading scorer with 18 points while Higgins added 12. Chaffee scored 8, Peery 7, Schlader 6 and Shears and Hinkelman 2 each.
C.V. had a 31-34 edge on the boards with Bruner grabbing 8 and Schlader 7 to lead the Pirates.
Higgins had 4 steals and 4 assists while Shears added 4 assists.
Prairie was 22 for 58 from the field, 38%, and 7 for 14 at the line, 50%. C.V. was 16 for 38 from the field, 42%, and 6 of 8 at the line, 75%.
Prairie had little trouble winning the JV game as they rolled to a 75-27 win.
They led 15-6 at the end of the first quarter as Anderson scored 5 and Karel 4. They had a 14-0 run in the second quarter that blew the game open and allowed them to take a 36-14 lead at the half. Glimp scored 6 of the 14 points in that run.
Karel scored 8, Todd Ott 6 and Wemhoff 5 in the third quarter as the Pirates continued to add to the advantage.
For the game Karel scored 15 to led the team with Wemhoff adding 9, Glimp and Ott 8 each, Grant Gehring 6, Dylan Schumacher, Anderson, Michael Schwartz and Luke Schwartz 5 each, Spencer Schumacher 4, Ross 3 and Brayden Wood 2 as everyone who played scored.
Prairie dominated on the boards 40-21 Spencer Schumacher and Karel each had 6 to lead the team.
Wemhoff had 5 steals while Spencer Schumacher had 4. Dylan Schumacher and Luke Schwartz each had 3 assists.
Prairie was 33 for 60 from the field, 55%, and 6 for 19 at the line, 32%. C.V. was 10 for 35 from the field, 29%, and 7 for 9 at the line, 78%.

Vs. Troy
The Pirates finished off their week with a dominating win over Troy at Cottonwood, winning 72-49.
Prairie never trailed in the game as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead on 2 free throws by Bruner and a basket by Peery.Brandon Anderson drove in from the corner for this lay-up against Troy. Behind him is Jake Bruner.
Troy trailed just 7-5 when Bruner and Higgins each scored putbacks to kick off a 12-4 run that gave the Pirates a 19-9 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Troy managed to get within 6 at 26-20 in the second quarter before another Pirate run of 12-3 that gave Prairie a 38-23 halftime lead. Schlader scored 8 of the 12 points in that run. Troy was limited to just 3 free throws over the final 2:50 of the half.
Prairie kicked off the second half with an 11-2 run as Hinkelman scored on a lay-up and a 3 pointer. 
Subs got a lot of playing time the rest of the way as Prairie cruised to the win.
Bruner scored 24 points to lead the scoring with Hinkelman adding 11 and Schlader 10. Peery scored 9, Wemhoff 5, Shears and Higgins 4 each, Anderson 3 and Chaffee 2.
Prairie held a 39-26 edge on the boards led by Bruner with 19.
Bruner also had 4 steals and 8 assists while Peery had 3 steals and Higgins had 3 assists.
Prairie was 27 for 49 from the field, 55%, and 15 for 20 at the line, 75%. Troy was 17 for 47 from the field, 36%, and 11 for 18 at the line, 61%.
Prairie is now 7-2 on the season and 4-1 in league play.
In the JV game Prairie rolled to a 65-32 win.
Troy scored first in the game and before they scored again, Prairie had a 22-2 lead. Dylan Schumacher scored 8 of those 22 points, most on transition lay-ups.
Prairie led 26-4 at the end of the quarter.
The offensive onslaught slowed in the second quarter as Troy cut into the Pirates lead but Prairie still led 35-21.
The third quarter was much like the first as Prairie had an 18-0 run to start the quarter with Anderson scoring 10 of those 18 points. That put Prairie up 53-21 with 4 minutes left in the quarter.
They backed off at that point and still led 59-26 after 3 quarters which led to the fourth quarter being played with a running clock.
About the only downside of the game is that Spencer Schumacher appeared to injure his ankle as he spent the varsity game with it elevated and iced.
Anderson led the scoring with 18 points with Spencer Schumacher scoring 10, Dylan Schumacher 8, Karel and Wemhoff 7 each, Glimp 6 and Gehring, Todd Ott, Michael Schwartz and Tayler Ott 2 each.
The JV’s dominated the boards 44-20 with Karel and Spencer Schumacher each collecting 7 rebounds.
Anderson had 3 steals and Dylan Schumacher had 3 steals and 3 assists.
Prairie was 27 for 62 from the field, 44%, and 10 for 24 at the line, 42%. Troy was 10 for 25 from the field, 40%, and 11 for 25 at the line, 44%.
