Pirates rally to beat Kamiah
The Prairie Pirates played just one game this past week overcoming a terrible first half to claim a 51-38 win over Kamiah at Cottonwood Friday, Jan. 22.
Kamiah ran a patient offense, trying to limit possessions for the Pirates and it worked in the first half.Terran Peery drives past a pick set by Tyson Schlader.
Kamiah scored first in the game but Terran Peery scored on a putback to tie it. Jake Bruner scored a free throw and then stole the ball and scored to make it 5-2 with 5:30 left in the opening period.
The pace of Kamiah’s offense saw the teams scored just 4 points each the rest of the quarter as Prairie took a 9-6 lead at the break.
In the second quarter Prairie’s shooting went ice-cold on the few possessions they had as they hit just 1 of 9 shots and the only points came with just 55 seconds left in the half when Brandon Higgins connected on a 3-pointer.
Prairie was 1 shot and done throughout the quarter as they had no offensive boards and saw the Kubs outrebound them 2-11.
Fortunately for the Pirates, Kamiah was burning up the nets either as Higgins’ 3-pointer put the Pirates on top 12-11.
Kamiah scored though 15 seconds later to take a 12-13 lead at the half.
The Kubs upped the lead to 12-18 in the third quarter before Higgins hit another 3-pointer.
Prairie was down 17-21 with 5:20 left in the third when their pressure defense started forcing turnovers that led to transition baskets.
One of those turnovers led to a putback by Bruner that he converted into a 3-point play.
Another Kamiah turnover led to a basket by Tyson Schlader that put Prairie ahead with 4:58 to play in the quarter. The Pirates would go on to score 13 unanswered points and take a 30-21 lead late in the quarter.
In addition to the defense forcing turnovers, the Pirates were able to get after it on the offensive glass which led to second chance opportunities.
Their shooting was still off as they hit 6 of 18 from the field but they were 5 of 6 at the line and limited Kamiah to just 6 shots in the quarter as they forced 7 turnovers.
Prairie finally found their shooting touch in the fourth quarter as they hit 8 of 10 from the field which helped offset the fouling they did on defense that led to the Kubs hitting 10 of 13 free throws. The Kubs were just 2 for 8 from the field though as Prairie led by as many as 17 points at 48-31 before settling for a 13 point win.
Bruner wound up leading the Pirates in scoring with 13 points and added 9 rebounds and 7 assists.
Higgins scored 10 with 6 steals and 4 assists. Schlader scored 10, all in the second half. Peery added 8, Calvin Hinkelman 5, Brandon Anderson 4 and Hunter Chaffee 1.
Kamiah held a 31-32 edge on the boards mostly due to the second quarter disparity.
Prairie was 19 for 52 from the field, 37%, and 11 for 18 at the line, 61%. Kamiah was 12 for 36 from the field, 33%, and 11 for 15 at the line, 73%.
Prairie is now 11-2 on the season and 6-1 in league play.

Nick Mager had 4 points with Spencer Schumacher adding a basket and Luke Wemhoff a free throw for a 32-22 halftime lead.
Kamiah got no closer than 7 in the third quarter as they trailed 44-37 heading into the fourth.
Twice they got within 5 in the fourth quarter, the second time at 47-42 on a 3-pointer. Just after that Kamiah lost their second player to fouls and with only 6 players, had to go the final 3:01 with just 4 players on the floor.
