Pirates win 2 of 3, finish 2nd in league
The Prairie Pirates won 2 of 3 games this past week and finished second in league play.
On Tuesday, Feb. 2, they beat Kendrick 60-37 in a non-league game at Cottonwood. On Thursday, Feb. 4, in what amounted to the league championship game, they struggled to score and fell 36-57 at Lapwai. Finally on Saturday, Feb. 6, they closed out their league schedule with a 63-43 win over C.V. on Senior Night.
Vs. Kendrick
In a matchup of the second place teams from Division 1 and Division 2 of the White Pine League, the Pirates dominated in the second quarter and went on to win 60-37 at Cottonwood.Brandon Higgins passes out of a double team to Isaiah Shears in the Kendrick game. In the background is Hunter Chaffee.
Kendrick got the jump on the Pirates in the opening quarter as they took a 4-10 lead and led 10-14 at the quarter break.
Kendrick’s high-scoring 6’7” post Wyatt Hardin scored 6 of the Tigers 10 first quarter points then left the game after rolling his ankle.
Prairie took advantage of Hardin’s absence to score the first 8 points of the second quarter with Isaiah Shears scoring 5 of those points, to take an 18-14 lead.
A 3-pointer by Kendrick cut the lead to 1 but Prairie outscored the Tigers 8-2 the rest of the quarter for a 26-19 lead. 
Hardin got his ankle retaped and came back midway through the quarter scoring Kendrick’s 2 points in that closing run.
In the third quarter Prairie got scoring from all 5 starters with Terran Peery scoring 6 and Jake Bruner 5 while it was the Hardin show for the Tigers as he had 9 of their 10 points. The 5 on 1 scoring loads went in Prairie’s favor as the Pirates outscored the Tigers 19-10 in the quarter to take a 45-29 lead into the fourth quarter.
Two free throws by Brandon Higgins in the fourth put Prairie up by 21 at 51-30 with 5:07 left. A 6-point flurry by Hardin cut the lead to 15 but Kendrick was held to just 1 point though in the final 3 minutes as Prairie closed the game with a 9-1 run.
Bruner led the Pirates in scoring with 18 points before fouling out with 6:01 left to play. Fortunately Prairie was up by 17 at that point.
Tyson Schlader, Peery and Higgins each scored 8 with Brandon Anderson scoring 7, Shears 5, Calvin Hinkelman 4 and Hunter Chaffee 2.
Prairie had a 38-24 edge on the boards with Bruner and Schlader each pulling down 8 rebounds to lead the team.
Higgins, Shears and Schlader each had 3 steals and Higgins had 3 assists.
Prairie was 26 for 58 from the field, 45%, and 6 for 10 at the line, 60%. Kendrick was 14 for 37 from the field, 38%, and 6 for 12 at the line, 50%. Hardin had 23 of Kendrick’s 37 points.
In the JV game Prairie rolled to a 54-28 win.
Kendrick took an early lead at 2-4 but a 17-4 run to end the first quarter put Prairie on top to stay. Brandon Anderson scored 7 and Spencer Schumacher 6 in the quarter to give Prairie a 19-8 lead at the quarter break.
Prairie started the second quarter with a 12-4 run to push the lead to 19. Anderson scored 8 more and Schumacher 6 to help Prairie take a 35-19 lead at the half.
The Pirates threatened to shut out Kendrick in the third quarter, scoring the first 13 points before Kendrick finally scored with 15 seconds left. That gave Prairie a 48-21 lead after 3 quarters.
A 3-pointer by Devin Ross with 3:59 left put Prairie up 53-23 and the rest of the game was played with a running clock.
Anderson wound up with 19 points to lead the scoring with Spencer Schumacher scoring 14. Ross added 8, Ryan Glimp 6, Luke Wemhoff 4, Tayler Ott 2 and Grant Gehring 1.
Prairie dominated the boards 40-24 with Spencer Schumacher leading the way with 9 rebounds. Glimp added 7.
Anderson had 5 steals and 4 assists while Wemhoff had 4 steals.
Prairie was 22 for 62 from the field, 35%, and 7 of 8 at the line, 88%. Kendrick was 12 for 32 from the field, 38%, and 4 for 10 at the line, 40%.

At Lapwai
The game at Lapwai was for a share of the league title and also for the #1 seed into District as Prairie had the tiebreaker on seeding if they wound up tied. It turned out to be a lopsided contest in favor of the hosts.
Prairie led 5-4 at the end of a low-scoring first quarter but Lapwai got things cranked up in the second quarter as they outscored the Pirates 8-22 to take a 13-26 lead at the half.
Lapwai got their turnover machine cranked up in that quarter which included a 0-11 run with much of the scoring on transition baskets.
Lapwai outscored the Pirates 7-12 in the third quarter and 16-19 in the fourth as they pulled away for a 21-point win.
The game saw the return of Imani Mitchell to Lapwai’s lineup after he had missed all of football season and most of the basketball season to a knee injury.
Bruner led the Pirates in scoring with 13 points, well below his season average. Chaffee and Anderson scored 6 each with Schlader scoring 5, and Peery and  Hinkeman 2 each.
It was Prairie’s first loss since the last time they played Lapwai. They had 11 straight wins in the interim.
The JV team also lost by a score of 43-50.

Vs. C.V.
Unlike the game at C.V., Prairie dominated the Rams on Senior Night at Cottonwood Saturday, Feb. 6.

Higgins then got the scoring started with a 3-pointers and Bruner added a pair of baskets to make it 7-0.
C.V. cut the lead to 7-4 before Chaffee hit a 3-pointer to make it 10-4 at the quarter break.
Prairie pretty much won the game in the first 4 minutes of the second quarter as they opened with a 13-0 run that featured three 3-pointers, two by Peery and the other by Higgins.
Peery opened the quarter with a 3 from the corner and Bruner then stole the inbounds pass and scored to make it 15-4. Consecutive 3’s by Peery and Higgins made it 21-4  with both coming after C.V. turnovers. Chaffee then finished off the run with a basket to make it 23-4.
C.V. got going with a 4-8 rally but Peery’s third 3 of the quarter kicked off a 9-0 run that pushed the lead to 36-12. Bruner added a basket and then Shears scored on a pair of reverse lay-ups and converted a 3-point play on the second one.
Prairie led 38-17 at the half.
The Pirates went cold in the third quarter, hitting just 2 of 11 shots, but they still led 43-26 after 3 as C.V. was just 3 for 20 in the quarter.
C.V. managed to cut the lead down to 14 a couple of times in the fourth quarter, the last at 52-38 with 3:00 left. 
Prairie then scored 7 straight to take a 21 point lead at 59-38 with Bruner scoring 5 straight points and Peery adding a pair of free throws.
Bruner wound up with 21 points and Peery added 18. Peery was 4 for 7 from 3-point range. Higgins scored 8, Shears and Chaffee 5 each and Schlader, Anderson and Spencer Schumacher added 2 each.
C.V. had the rebounding edge at 37-43. Bruner had 11 to lead the Pirates with Higgins adding 6.
Higgins and Bruner had 5 steals each and Schlader had 3 assists with Bruner, Higgins and Peery adding 2 each.
Prairie was 22 for 54 from the field, 41%, and 12 for 18 at the line, 67%. C.V. was 15 for 54 from the field, 28%, and 11 for 19 at the line, 58%.
Prairie finishes up league play at 10-2 and they are 15-3 overall.
In the JV game Prairie won easily 62-30.
C.V. jumped out to a 2-4 lead but Prairie then went on a 21-2 run to take control of the game. Spencer Schumacher scored 9 consecutive points in that run and Nick Mager added 8.
C.V. broke the run with a free throw to make it 23-6 at the quarter break.
Prairie then scored the first 9 points of the second quarter to take a 32-6 lead on their way to a 34-13 halftime lead.
In the third quarter Spencer Schumacher scored 9 points and Glimp added 6 as Prairie outscored the Rams 20-12 to take a 54-25 lead into the fourth quarter.
Michael Schwartz scored a free throw 28 seconds into the quarter to send the game into running clock mode. 40 seconds later he added a 3-pointer. Grant Gehring scored Prairie’s other 4 points in the final quarter.
Spencer Schumacher wound up with 18 points to lead the scoring with Glimp adding 10. Mager had 8, Anderson 7, Schwartz 6, Gehring 4, Anthony Karel 3, and Dylan Schumacher, Wemhoff and Ross 2 each.
Spencer Schumacher had 9 rebounds to lead Prairie to a 52-26 advantage on the boards. Todd Ott and Gehring added 6 rebounds each.
Glimp and Mager had 3 steals each and Ross had 3 assists.
Prairie was 25 for 49 from the field, 51%, and 11 for 18 at the line, 61%. C.V. was 11 for 45 from the field, 24%, and 8 for 31 at the line, 26%.
