Pirates out in 2 games at State
It was a disappointing finish to what had been a great season as the Prairie Pirates were eliminated in 2 games at the 1A-D1 State Tournament held at Vallivue High School in Caldwell March 3-4.
In Thursday’s opener the fell to District 4 champion Oakley by at 32-38 score. On Friday they were beaten by White Pine League foe Genesee 46-51.
Vs. Oakley
In the opener against Oakley the Hornets were able to play the game at their pace, which is to say really slow. A steal by Jake Bruner against Oakley at the start of the second quarter led to points for the Pirates.Oakley probably took at the very least 30 seconds per possession, working the ball around the perimeter until they could find an opening in the defense. Meanwhile when Prairie was on offense the Hornets were able to limit them to just 1 shot as they owned the defensive glass.
Jake Bruner scored the first points of the game as he won the top and then got the ball back for a spin move in the lane for a lay-up just 19 seconds into the game. That would be Prairie’s only points of the first quarter. Oakley didn’t fare a whole let better but were able to take a 2-4 lead by the end of the quarter.
Prairie tied it up early in the second as Bruner stole the ball and drove downcourt for a lay-up but it took over 3:30 for Prairie to score again as Oakley scored 7 straight to take a 4-11 lead before Brandon Higgins made the first of 2 free throws.
Calvin Hinkelman scored a midrange jumper and Bruner added another spin move for a lay-up as Prairie was able to score just 9 points in the first half.
They were still in the game though as Oakley scored just 19 for a 10 point halftime lead.
Oakley pushed the lead to 15 in the third quarter as they held Prairie scoreless until the 2:15 mark when Bruner scored after making a steal.
A basket inside by Tyson Schlader on a feed from Terran Peery and a 3-pointer in the final seconds by Hunter Chaffee cut the deficit to 16-24 after 3 quarters.
Prairie opened the fourth quarter showing a more intensity on defense and the defensive glass as they outscored Oakley 10-5 to get within 3 points at 26-29 with 2:30 to go.
Oakley then got a huge 3-pointer to swing the momentum back their way and the built the lead back to 8 at 28-36 with 38 seconds left.
Prairie was only able to added 4 free throws, 2 each by Chaffee and Bruner, as Oakley won by 6.
Bruner scored 15 and had 14 rebounds and 5 steals to lead the team in all 3 categories. The rest of the team struggled to score as bench player Chaffee was the second leading scorer with 5 and fellow bench player Brandon Anderson had 4 points. Schlader scored 3 with Peery and Hinkelman adding 2 each and Higgins 1.
Oakley had a 26-32 edge on the boards.
Prairie was just 11 for 40 from the field, 28%, and 9 for 20 at the line, 45%. Oakley was 13 for 32 from the field, 41%, and 10 for 19 at the line, 53%.
Oakley was led in scoring by junior Hewston Beck with 11 and senior Jordan Craney had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Pirates started well as Bruner and Peery each scored 4 points to stake Prairie to an early 8-2 lead.
Genesee trimmed the lead to 2 at 8-6 but Prairie answered with a 9-3 run to end the quarter with Peery scoring 5 and Bruner 4 as Prairie took a 17-9 lead.
Genesee got the lead back down to 4 at 19-15 but a basket by Peery on an inbound feed from Schlader and a 3-pointer by Chaffee with Schlader getting another assist, put Prairie up 24-15.
Tyson Schlader goes for a reverse lay-up against Genesee. #23 is Calvin Hinkelman.Genesee’s Trevor Stout answered with a 3-pointer but Bruner scored with 1 second left to make it 26-18 at the half.
In the third quarter Prairie was able to lead by as many as 10 at 32-22 with 6:10 left only to see Genesee answer with a 2-11 run to cut the lead to 1 at 34-33 with 3:34 left. Stout and Conner Phillips each had a 3-pointer for the Bulldogs in that run.
Hinkelman broke the run with a 3-pointer off a feed from Peery and then added another basket as the result of a steal by Higgins in the final minute as Prairie took a 39-33 lead into the fourth quarter.
That lead didn’t last long as Genesee opened the fourth quarter with a 2-8 run with Prairie’s only points coming on a putback by Schalder. Genesee then tied it on a 3-pointer by Stout.
Bruner scored following a steal to put Prairie back on top but the lead lasted just 16 seconds as Phillips was fouled and made both free throws to tie it with 4:54 left.
Neither team scored for nearly 2 minutes with Genesee’s Jake Demeerleer giving the Bulldogs their first lead of the game with a pair of free throws with 3:01 left.
Bruner broke a more than 4 minute scoring drought for the Pirates with a free throw with 56 seconds left that cut the deficit to 1 point. In that 4 minute scoring drought Prairie missed two point blank lay-ins after Genesee turnovers that could have swung the momentum back their way.
Genesee wound up outscoring Prairie 2-6 over the final 56 seconds with all 6 of their points coming from Stout at the free throw line.
Bruner wound up with 19 points in his final game for the Pirates to lead the team in scoring and also added 7 rebounds.
