Pirates win 2 of 4
The Prairie baseball team won 2 of 4 games this past week. They started with an epic bottom of the seventh comeback to beat Asotin 14-13 Tuesday, April 5 at Cottonwood. They then won 1 of 3 at the Glenns Ferry Tournament. They lost 3-5 to Malad on Friday, April 8, beat Soda Springs 6-5 and then lost to Nampa Christian 4-16 on Saturday, April 9.
Vs. Asotin
Asotin had shut down the Pirates in Prairie’s season opener and looked to be on their way to another big win as they led 3-12 going into the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Pirates plated 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 12-6. Asotin added a run in the top of the 7th to take a 6-13 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
Prairie then staged what is likely their biggest final inning rally ever. Prairie had only 2 hits in the inning but were helped with 4 errors and 3 walks and a hit batsman as they sent 12 batters to the plate with only 1 being put out.
The game ended when Devin Bruegeman’s hard grounder to second with the bases loaded was misplayed for the fourth error of the inning, allowing the winning run to score.
Spencer Schumacher, who pitched the final 2 innings wound up being the winning pitcher despite giving up 4 runs.
Prairie had 7 hits in the game with Dereck Arnzen collecting a double while Bruegeman, Terran Peery, Brandon Anderson, Jake Bruner, Daniel Mager and Schumacher each had a single.
Bruegeman started for the Pirates and went 3 innings, allowing 5 runs. Mager pitched the fourth and fifth and gave up 5 more runs. Schumacher pitched the final two innings and gave up 4 runs.

Vs. Malad
In their opener at the Glenns Ferry Wooden Bat Tournament, Prairie saw Malad score twice in the top of the sixth to break a 3-3 tie and were unable to score in the bottom of the inning. The game then was called on time limit.
Prairie jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and made it 3-0 after two innings.
Schumacher gave up a run in the third and then Malad scored 2 more off of him in the fifth before Bruegeman came on to finish the inning. Bruegeman then gave up 2 in the sixth and the 2 innings he pitched in turned out to be big on Saturday.
Prairie had 4 hits in the game with Bruner collecting a pair of singles. Arnzen and Bruegeman each added a single.

Vs. Soda Springs
In a game played at 8 a.m. Pacific time Saturday morning Mager got off to a rocky start on the mound as he walked 3 of the first four Daniel Mager makes a catch in left field against Nampa Christian.batters but got out of the inning with only 1 run scored as catcher Anderson nailed a runner trying to steal second and Mager then got a strikeout to end the inning.
An error and a single in the second inning put runners on second and third but Mager got out of that inning by inducing a ground ball to second.
In the bottom of the second, Calvin Hinkelman picked up his first hit of the season when he crushed a double to the wall in left. Arnzen moved him to third with a groundout and Hinkelman scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
Two more walks and a single led to another run by Soda Springs in the third as they took back the lead.
Mager then ran into trouble in the fourth as the Cardinals plated 4 runs on 2 walks and 3 singles. Mager got out of the inning when second baseman Jace Perrin made a juggling catch of a line drive and then doubled off the runner at second for an inning ending double play.
Prairie got back on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth with a 2 out rally. Arnzen reached on an error by the shortstop with 2 outs. Mager then helped his own cause with a single up the middle. Perrin followed with his own single up the middle to score Arnzen and when the ball got away from the centerfielder, Mager was able to score to cut the lead to 3-5.
Bruner came on to pitch in the top of the fifth and needed just 5 pitches to get a flyball out to left, comebacker to the mound and lineout to short.
Prairie then put together their own 4 run inning to take their first lead of the game. Bobby Hood started the inning by reaching on an error and then went to second on a balk. Bruegeman doubled over the left fielder’s head to score Hood. After an out, Anderson was hit by a pitch and the Cardinals changed pitchers. Bruegeman and Anderson pulled off a double steal to move to third and second. Hinkelman then greeted the new pitcher with a 2-run single on a 2-0 pitch that tied the game at 6-6. After the second out was made, Mager singled to right center to bring home Hinkelman with the go-ahead run.
In the sixth, Bruner needed just 6 pitches to get 2 groundouts and a flyball out to center.
Prairie went down in order in their half of the sixth.
In the top of the seventh Bruner got the first out on a first pitch groundout to third but then suddenly lost his control. After getting 7 outs on just 12 pitches, his next 8 pitches were all out of the strike zone leading to two walks. At that point Bruegeman was brought in to pitch. He got a foul popup to catcher Anderson and then a strikeout to end the game.
Prairie had 6 hits in the game with Hinkelman collecting a double and a single with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Mager had a pair of singles with 1 RBI and a run scored. Bruegeman had an RBI double and scored a run and Perrin had an RBI single. Anderson, Arnzen and Hood each scored a run.
Mager pitched 4 innings allowing 6 runs on 5 hits with 8 walks and 4 strikeouts. Bruner pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up no runs or hits with 2 walks. Bruegeman pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up no hits or runs with 1 strikeout.

Vs. Nampa Christian
Prairie’s final game at the Glenns Ferry Tournament was against perennial 2-A state contender Nampa Christian. It was a close game until Bruegeman ran out of innings.

Prairie came back to tie it when Bruegeman led off with a single to left and went to second on an error by the left fielder. After an out, Bruegeman scored on Anderson’s double down the left field line.
Nampa Christian answered with 2 more runs in the second. A passed ball on strike three let the leadoff batter reach and Bruegeman hit the next batter. After getting an out, a double scored both runners to make it 1-3.
Prairie came back in the third to take their first lead. Bruner beat out an infield single and Anderson and Hinkelman both walked to load the bases. Arnzen then singled to right to score both Bruner and Anderson with Hinkelman holding at second. A passed ball advanced both runners. Hinkelman then scored the go-ahead run when Mager grounded out to second. That gave prairie a 4-3 lead bat that was it for their scoring.
Nampa Christian took the lead back in the top of the fourth on a single, error and triple that scored 2 runs for a 4-5 lead.
With Bruegeman out of innings, Bruner went to the mound to start the fifth. He gave up 3 walks and hit a batter before being pulled in favor of Anderson. Anderson got a fielder’s choice for the second out of the inning then gave up a walk, single, walk, error and walk before he came out in favor of Perrin. Perrin walked the first batter he faced then gave up a single and a double before getting the final out. In all Nampa Christian scored 11 runs in the inning on 7 walks, 1 hit batsman, an error and 3 hits.
For Anderson and Perrin it was the first time either had pitched this season.
Prairie gave the Schwartz brothers each a chance to hit in the bottom of the fifth with Luke reaching on an error. He was then double off first when Thomas hit a short fly ball to the first baseman. The game then ended on the 10-run rule.
Prairie had 6 hits in the game with Bruegeman collecting 2 singles. Anderson had a double and Bruner, Arnzen and Schumacher each had a single. Arnzen had 2 RBI on his single while Mager and Anderson each had 1 RBI.
Prairie is now 3-3 on the season.
