Pirates take 2nd at District
The Prairie baseball team got off to a rocky start but bounced back to take second place and earn a trip to this weekend’s state tournament at Caldwell.
Prairie lot their District opener to Genesee 6-9 on Friday, May 13. They bounced back later in the day to eliminate Kamiah 11-0 in 5 innings. On Saturday, May 14 they met up with Genesee again and this time pulled out an 8-2 victory.
District Opener vs. Genesee
In their district opener against Genesee Prairie starting pitcher Devin Bruegeman, who has been the team’s ace pitcher the past two years, struggled to command his curveball and  gave up 3 first inning runs as he walked 2 batters and hit another before giving up a 2 run single.
He gave up another walk and hit batsman in the second inning but got out of the jam with a popup to third. He got the side out in order in the third before running into trouble again in the fourth.
He struck out the leadoff batter then gave up another walk. It appeared he would get out of the inning without any more scoring but a dropped fly ball in the outfield led to a run scoring and kept the inning alive. A single by the next batter made it 0-5 for Genesee.
In the bottom of the fifth Prairie finally got their bats going.  Their only threat in the first 4 innings came in the third when Jace Perrin singled and Spencer Schumacher followed with a double to open the inning. A walk loaded the bases with just 1 out but a strikeout and a groundout ended the inning with no score.
In the fifth Perrin again led off the inning with a double to left. After an out, Bobby Hood squared up a pitch and sent it nearly to the fence in left for a double that scored Perrin.
After a second out, consecutive errors allowed Jake Bruner and Brandon Anderson to reach with Hood scoring. Calvin Hinkelman then popped up a ball down the left field line that fell in about 6 inches fair and just out of the reach of 3 different fielders as both Bruner and Anderson scored to cut the lead to 4-5.
Genesee was able to bounce right back though with 3 runs in the sixth as a tiring Bruegeman gave up 4 singles and a walk.
Bruner went in to pitch the seventh and gave up another run as he walked 4 batters..
Prairie tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh. After two quick outs, Anderson drew a walk on 4 pitches. Hinkelman then hit a hard grounder to short that was mishandled for an error. Genesee changed pitchers and the new pitcher walked Dereck Arnzen. Daniel Mager then hit a grounder to second that was booted for another error allowing Anderson and Hinkelman to score. Perrin was walked to load the bases and bring the winning run to the plate in the form of Schumacher.
Schumacher wound up taking a 2-2 pitch that appeared to be low and outside but it was called a strike to end the game.
Prairie had 6 hits in the game with Perrin having a double and a single. Hood had an RBI double. Schumacher had a double. Hinkelman had a single with 2 RBI and Arnzen had a single.
Bruegeman gave up 8 runs on 7 hits in 6 innings with 5 walks, 2 hit batters and 7 strikeouts.

Vs. Kamiah
Later on Friday Mager went to the hill for the Pirates against Kamiah and pitched a 2-hit shutout.
He gave up a single and walk in the first inning but 2 ground balls to third with Arnzen able to scoop a couple of shorthopped throws to first getting the Pirates out of the inning.
Spencer Schumacher heads for third with a triple against Kamiah. In the bottom of the first Bruegeman led off with an infield single and Bruner followed with an RBI triple to the gap in right center. Bruner then scored on a wild pitch. Anderson walked and stole second, tagged and went to third on a fly ball to center by Hinkelman and scored on a groundball out by Arnzen to make the score 3-0.
Prairie doubled the lead in the second inning with 3 more runs. Schumacher led off the inning with a triple to right and scored on Bruegeman’s 1-out single to left. The leftfielder misplayed the ball allowing Bruegeman to go to second. He went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Bruner’s groundout to first. Anderson then doubled to left and scored on Hinkelman’s single up the middle.
Mager sailed through the second but got into a jam in the third with a 1 out double followed by a pair of hit batsmen. What followed was a strange way to get out of the jam. The next hitter swung for strike 3 at a curve ball in the dirt and took off for first even though he was automatically out with first base occupied and less than 2 out. The runner on first, not realizing that took off as well and catcher Anderson’s throw to first led to an easy double play for Arnzen, who tagged the runner coming back to the back to end the inning.
Mager gave up only 2 harmless walks the final two innings.
Prairie meanwhile added a 4-spot in the third against a new pitcher. Mager led off the inning by dropping a flare down the right field line for a double. He went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Perrin’s comebacker to the mound. Schumacher walked and Hood singled to right. After a second out, Bruner beat out an infield hit with Schumacher scoring. After Bruner stole second. Anderson singled up the middle to score both Hood and Bruner to make it 10-0.
Prairie added another run in the fourth when Arnzen led off with a double to left and scored when Schumacher reached on an error with 2 outs.
Mager allowed just 2 hits and no runs in 5 innings while walking 4, hitting 2 and striking out 2.

2nd Place Game vs. Genesee
Prairie got a second chance at Genesee on Saturday and caught them coming off a tough loss against Potlatch in the District championship game.
Schumacher pitched for the Pirates and gave up just 2 runs on 7 hits in 7 innings.Jake Bruner makes a great catch against Genesee to help stop a late rally in the second place game.
Genesee got him in a 2-out jam in the first inning with a bunt single and a walk but Hinkelman fielded a grounder well into the grass near third and threw out the batter for the third out.
In the bottom of the first Prairie got a pair of 2-out walks but a popup ended the inning.
In the second inning Schumacher gave up a leadoff single but then picked off the runner at first. A pair of strikeouts ended the inning.
In the bottom of the second Genesee’s pitcher walked the first 3 batters to load the bases. After an out, Bruegeman pounded a 2-run double to deep left field. Bruner followed with his own 2-run double to the gap in left. He then stole third and scored on Anderson’s single to right to make it 5-0 in favor of the Pirates.
Schumacher got the side out in order in the third and Mager led off the bottom of the third with a walk. Genesee then changed pitchers and a 1 out hit batsman and a 2-out error loaded the bases. Genesee then got out of the inning on a fielder’s choice.
Genesee mounted a 2-out threat in the fourth with a pair of singles but Schumacher got a called third strike to get out of the inning.
Prairie went down in order in the bottom of the fourth as did Genesee in the top of the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth Prairie put together a rally. Perrin had a 1-out single and went to second on a balk. After a second out, Hood drew a 4-pitch walk and Bruegeman beat out an infield hit to load the bases. Bruner then crushed a ball to the gap in left center for a bases clearing triple that made it 8-0.
Those 3 runs were big as Genesee finally got to Schumacher in the top of the sixth with a 2-out rally. After getting a pair of groundball outs, Schumacher gave up a double. A balk sent the runner to third and he scored Genesee’s first run on a wild pitch. A single and walk put runners on first and second. On the next play the batter grounded the ball to Perrin at second base who appeared to get the runner on a force at second for what would have been the third out. Both Perrin and shortstop Bruegeman wound up beating the runner to the bag and the umpire apparently thought Perrin was trying to get the ball to Bruegeman and neither had possession when the runner got there. A run scored on the play. Schumacher then struck out the next hitter to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh Genesee managed a 1-out single and a walk and the next hitter sent a pitch to the gap in left center with Bruner coming up with a great diving catch to save at least 1, if not 2 runs. The next batter also hit the ball hard but it went right to Hinkelman at third for the final out.
Schumacher allowed 7 hits and 2 runs in 7 innings with 3 walks and 8 strikeouts.
Prairie had 6 hits with Bruner having a triple and a double and 5 RBI. Bruegeman had a double and a single and 2 RBI. Anderson had a single and an RBI and Perrin had a single.
