Pirates win big in the mud
The Prairie football team got to play in the mud and came away with a big win at Potlatch Friday, Oct. 21, by a score of 76-20.Luke Wemhoff, his uniform caked with mud, takes off around right end for one of his 5 touchdowns.
The win clinched a share of the White Pine League football title for the Pirates, their third straight. They still have to beat Lapwai this Friday to have the league’s #1 seed into the state playoffs, which would mean an opening round game in the Kibbie Dome. Troy and Lapwai clinched the other two playoff spots with their wins last Friday. If Prairie wins Friday they would be the league champion. If they lose and Troy wins, there would be a 3-way tie and a drawing held last week would have Prairie as the #3 seed in that scenario and they would have to travel to Notus for their first round game. If they lose and Troy loses, they would be the #2 seed and would likely have to travel to Raft River.
In the game at Potlatch Lucas Wemhoff had another huge game as he rushed for 245 yards and had 5 touchdowns on just 10 carries.
Potlatch tried an onside kick on the opening kickoff with Brandon Anderson recovering at the Prairie 43. On the first play from scrimmage Wemhoff went around right end for 57 yards and his first touchdown. Anderson then ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-0.
Hunter Chaffee’s kickoff bounced off a Potlatch defender and Jake Stubbers recovered at the 50.
On the next play Wemhoff went around the left side this time for 50 yards and another touchdown. Spencer Schumacher passed to Chaffee for the 2-pointer to make it 16-0.
Wemhoff had carried the ball twice for 107 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Potlatch finally put the offense on the field and quarterback Bailey Clark broke loose for a 56 yard run with Anderson making the saving tackle at the Prairie 15.
A holding penalty set the Loggers back to the 25 and Prairie’s defense forced the Loggers to turn the ball over on downs at the 24.
Prairie needed 10 plays this time to travel 76 yards with Wemhoff scoring his third touchdown from 9 yards out. Wemhoff had carries of 18, 6 and 6 yards on the drive while Anderson had a 14 yard run and Schumacher a 20 yard run. Schumacher passed to Chaffee again for the 2-pointer to make it 24-0.
Prairie got the ball right back at the Loggers 40 on a fumble that was recovered by Anderson.
After an incomplete pass the Pirates went with what was working and Wemhoff scored his fourth touchdown on a 40 yard run. Anderson ran in the 2-pointer to make it 32-0.
Potlatch fumbled the ball away again on their own 37 with Caleb McWilliams recovering.
An incomplete pass started the drive then Wemhoff picked up 12 to the 25. Schumacher kept it himself around the left side for 25 yards and the touchdown on the next play. Schumacher then passed to Derik Shears for the 2-pointer that invoked the running clock mercy rule with 5 seconds left in the first quarter.
Potlatch took over after the kickoff at their own 35 and fumbled the ball twice in 2 plays with Anderson recovering the second fumble at the 32.
Shears went 22 yards on the first play to set up a first down just outside the 10. McWilliams carried the ball into the end zone on the next play. Shears scored the 2-pointer to make it 48-0.
Potlatch took over at the 15 after the kickoff and a bad snap on second down saw Jace Perrin recover the ball for Prairie at the 5. Schumacher scored his second touchdown on the next play. Michael Schwartz scored the 2-pointer to make it 56-0.
Potlatch finally got on the scoreboard on the ensuing kickoff. Chris Hamburg took the kick at the 14 yard line and took it all the way back for a touchdown. Clark add the 2-pointer to make it 56-8.
Prairie answered right back as they took over at their own 44 after a 10 yard return by McWilliams. Wemhoff scored his fifth touchdown on a 56 yard run around right end. Schwartz ran in the 2-pointer to make it 64-8.
Chaffee pinned Potlatch deep when the return man had to pick up the ball at the 1 and only got back to the 4.
On the first play from scrimmage Stubbers intercepted a pass from Clark at the 14.
4 plays later Anderson scored from the 3. For the first time Prairie couldn’t add the 2-pointer and they led 70-8 at the half.
Schumacher twice sacked Potlatch’s new quarterback, Cole Thompson, for losses of 8 and 20 yards to force the Loggers to punt.
Prairie fumbled the ball back 2 plays later. Potlatch didn’t keep the ball long though as they fumbled it back to Prairie 3 plays later with Owen Anderson recovering the ball at the Potlatch 35.
3 plays later Schwartz scored on a 15 yard weep to the left. The 2-point try failed leaving Prairie with a 76-8 lead.
Potlatch scored their first offensive touchdown on their next possession as Clark took the ball 70 yards for a touchdown to make it 76-14 on the last play of the third quarter.
The JV offense took over for Prairie in the fourth and couldn’t move the ball, fumbling it away twice.
Potlatch scored the only points in the fourth quarter with their only pass completion of the game, a 23 yard catch by Thompson from the Loggers’ third quarterback of the game, Brandon Morris.
Prairie wound up with 396 yards rushing on 31 carries, led by Wemhoff with 245 on 10 carries. Schumacher added 44 on 4 carries with Brandon Anderson adding 26 on 4 carries. Schwartz had 20 yards on 6 carries and Raice Dalgliesh had 17 yards on 1 carries.
Schumacher completed just 1 of 3 pass attempts for 2 yards. Devin Ross was 1 for 1 for 5 yards. Sam Mager caught 1 pass for 5 yards and Brandon Anderson caught 1 for 2 yards.
Potlatch gained 92 yards rushing on 29 attempts. Clark had 142 yards on 10 attempts but the Loggers had 11 running plays that lost yardage.
Potlatch quarterbacks were 1 for 6 for 23 yards and 1 interception.
Brandon Anderson and McWilliams each had 3 tackles to lead the defense. Schumacher and Mager had 2 each. Hayden Uhlenkott and Schwartz had 1.5 each. Carson Schmidt, Ross, Dalgliesh and Wemhoff had 1 each.
Prairie is no 7-1 on the season and 6-0 in league play. Their next game is this Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at home against Lapwai. It will also be Senior Night. There was supposed to be a 5th quarter JV game but that has been cancelled.
