win 2 of 3
The Prairie boys basketball team won 2 of 3 games played this past week after their long hiatus for Christmas break. On Tuesday, Jan. 3 they beat Asotin 72-55 at Cottonwood. On Thursday, Jan. 5 they traveled to Moscow and lost 29-44. They finished the week with a league win at Potlatch Saturday, Jan.6 by a score of 62-41. 
In the second quarter Hunter Chaffee got hot from the outside as he sank 3 of 4 three point attempts and had 11 points in the quarter. Also scoring in the quarter were Spencer Schumacher with 5 points including a 3-pointer and Luke Wemhoff with 4 as Prairie opened up a 43-23 lead by halftime. Chaffee sank a couple more 3’s in the third quarter with his 5th of the game giving Prairie a 53-25 lead with 3:33 left in the quarter. At that point Asotin’s Eli Engledow got hot from long distance sinking 3 straight 3’s of his own to cut the lead back to 19 at 53-34. 2 baskets by Schumacher and a basket by Wemhoff pushed the lead back to 25 by the end of the quarter, 59-34. Asotin was able to get the lead back down to 15 at one point late in the fourth quarter but that was as close as it got. Chaffee wound up with 21 points to lead the scoring. Schumacher was also in double figures with 10 points with Wemhoff scoring 8, Tyson Schlader and Brandon Anderson 6 each, Gavin Branson 5 and Todd Ott, Anthony Karel and Devin Ross 2 each. Prairie had a 32-25 edge on the boards. Anderson had 5 steals while Chmelik had 4 and Branson had 8 assists. Prairie was 28 for 51 from the field, 55%, and 9 for 11 at the line, 82%. Asotin was 21 for 54 from the field, 39%, and 7 for 10 at the line, 70%. The JV game was a much tighter contest with Prairie pulling out a 50-46 win. Prairie got a quick 2-0 lead when Dylan Schumacher sank a pair of free throws as Asotin was assessed a technical foul for a different player starting than was listed in the official scorebook. Devin Ross made it 4-0 on the ensuing possession. Asotin answered back with 7 straight points but Prairie managed to take a 16-13 lead by the end of the quarter as Ross connected on a 3, Derik Shears added a pair of baskets and Schumacher also added 3 points. 3 times Asotin pulled within 1 in the second quarter but couldn’t take the lead as Prairie held on to a 25-23 lead at the half. Shears scored 3 in the quarter while Schumacher, Ross and Carson Schmidt each added a basket. Asotin was able to take the lead in the third quarter at 27-28 but Michael Schwartz scored on a drive to the hoop to kick off a 6-0 run that gave Prairie a 33-28 lead by the end of the quarter. In the fourth Asotin was able to tie the score 3 different times but could never get the lead as Prairie always had an answer. When Asotin tied it at 35, Schmidt answered with a basket inside. When they tied it again at 37, Ross connected on a 3-pointer. When they tied it again, for the final time, at 42, Shears answered with a basket then made 4 straight free throws to put Prairie up by 6 with 56 seconds left. Tanner Hibbard then made a steal scored to make it 50-42 with 45 seconds left and Prairie held on for the win. Shears scored 15 to lead the team with Ross adding 10 points. Schumacher scored 7. Anthony Karel and Schmidt added 6 points each. Schwartz scored 4 and Hibbard scored 2. Prairie had a 34-27 edge on the boards with Karel and Shears each grabbing 8 rebounds while Ross and Schumacher each had 7. Karel and Ross each had 3 steals and Schumacher and Ross each had 3 assists. Prairie was 20 for 45 from the field, 44%, and 8 for 15 at the line, 53%. Asotin was 19 for 50 from the field, 38%, and 5 for 9 at the line, 56%. The Pirates used their size advantage inside with Chmelik and Schumacher helping them build their 7 point halftime lead. After the half though the Pirates scored just 3 points each in the third and fourth quarters. Chmelik had the only basket of the third quarter and a 3-pointer by Branson accounted for all of the fourth quarter points. Only 4 Prairie players scored in the game with Chmelik scoring 9, Chaffee and Branson 8 each and Schumacher 4. The JV team also picked up a loss as they fell 33-61. They were shorthanded as both Dylan Schumacher and Schwartz were out with injuries. The Pirates jumped out to a 10-2 lead as Chaffee sank a pair of 3’s and Anderson and Chmelik each added a basket, but Potlatch closed within 4 at 10-6. Chmelik closed out the quarter with a drive into the lane for a jump hook.  A
10-0 run to open the second quarter put the Pirates in control. Schumacher
opened the quarter with a basket. Wemhoff scored then picked up another
basket after a steal. Schumacher connected on the first of two free throws
then Chaffee drilled another 3 to make it 22-6.
Prairie outscored Potlatch just 10-8 the rest of the half for a 32-14 lead at the break. Schlader opened the second half scoring with a 3-pointer but Potlatch actually outscored the Pirates the rest of the quarter but still trailed by 15 heading into the final period at 48-33. Potlatch cut the lead to 11 at 48-37 with 6:56 to play but Prairie closed out the game with a 14-4 run that could have been more if Prairie could have connected from the free throw line. The Pirates were just 1 for 6 in the fourth quarter at the line. Chaffee finished off the scoring with his 6th 3-pointer of the game. He would up hitting 6 of 11 from long distance and scored 24 points. Chmelik and Wemhoff were both in double figures with 10 points each. Schumacher scored 7 while Schlader and Branson scored 4 each and Anderson scored 2. Prairie had a 36-24 edge on the boards as Chmelik had another double-double with 12 rebounds to go with his 10 points. Chmelik and Wemhoff each had a pair of steals and Branson had 7 assists while Schumacher added 4 assists. Both teams took care of the ball well as they each had just 9 turnovers in the game. Prairie was 23 for 46 from the field, 50%, And 8 for 25 at the line, 32%. Potlatch was 13 for 39 from the field, 33%, and 13 for 17 at the line, 76%. Prairie is now 6-2 on the season and 3-1 in league play. In the JV game Prairie trailed by 9 points with just over a minute to play and could’ve pulled out a win if a 3-pointer by Ross had found the mark at the buzzer. They wound up losing 51-53. Ross hit a pair of 3-pointers to help the Pirates get the game to just a 2-point deficit. He missed what could’ve been a tying 3 but Shears scored the putback to cut the lead to 51-52 with 30 seconds left. Potlatch was fouled and made 1 of 2 at the line setting up the final possession with 28 seconds left. Coach Seth Guyer called a timeout with 9 seconds left to set up the final play and it wound up with Ross putting up a contested 3-pointer from about 5 feet behind the arc. In the game Prairie trailed 11-15 at the end of the first quarter but led at the half 23-22 as Ross had 15 first half points including 9 from 3-point range, while Shears scored the other 8 points. Prairie hit just 1 of 9 from the field in the third quarter and trailed 30-31 after 3. A 0-7 run by Potlatch turned a 1 point deficit into an 8 point deficit at 38-46. A three and a pair of free throws by Ross cut it to 3 but Potlatch answered with 6 straight to push the lead to 9, their biggest of the game. Ross wound up with 30 points and was 6 for 20 from long distance. Shears added 14 points with Karel scoring 6 and Schmidt 1. Prairie had a 40-29 rebounding advantage as Shears and Ross each had a double-double. Shears had 12 rebounds and Ross had 10. Tanner Hibbard had 4 steals and 2 assists while Ross had 3 steals and 5 assists. Prairie was 17 for 54 from the field, 31%, and 11 for 24 at the line, 46%. Potlatch was 23 for 38 from the field, 60%, and 5 for 17 at the line, 29%. Prairie won a 2-quarter C game by a score of 25-14. Owen Anderson and Hayden Uhlenkott each scored 4 in the first quarter as Prairie took a 12-6 lead. In the second quarter Anderson added 6 more while Damian Forsmann scored 5 as Prairie pulled away for the win. Anderson wound up leading the scoring with 10 points with Forsmann scoring 7 and Uhlenkott and Sam Mager 4 each.
