Soil Health Workshop set for Tuesday at Ferdinand
A Soil Health Workshop is slated for Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at the Assumption Parish Hall, 514 Maple St., Ferdinand. Id. Registration will begin at 8:30 am with the program to begin at 9:00 a.m.
Featured speakers will be Johanna Phillips, Idaho Dept of Ag talking on organic certification requirement overview, including land requirements for transition of crop land for organic certification eligibility. Overview of USDA NOP organic certification requirements, as well as recordkeeping requirements. 
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will discuss organic agriculture through the Organic Initiative and Environment Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). Presentation will focus on the programs and technical services available to support the organic and transitioning to organic farmer including general practices used in the production of an organic crop. Discussion will be targeted toward farmers and ranchers in the North Central Idaho area focusing on practices and methods that have shown to be effective in this area. 
Jim Church, UI Extension, will share experiences with growers and problems associated with cover crops.
Tom Gehring and Ross Nielson discussing uses of manure and problems associated with manure fertility and pesticide carry over. Biological availability and uses in organic farming.
Dick Randall, Clearwater Seeds, will have different varieties of seed mixes for successful cover crops. 
A Grower Panel discussion on good experiences and lessons learned from cover crops, maintaining records of pesticides to accommodate different species of cover crops. How to integrate cattle/sheep and cover crops into your production to improve your nutrient management plan naturally and diversify your income.
Pesticide recertification credits and CCA credits have been applied for.
This educational workshop is hosted by the Lewis Soil Conservation District, Idaho Soil and Water Conservation District, and the Clearwater Soil and Water Conservation District.
