Pirates win twice
The Prairie Pirates finished up their regular season schedule with an impressive pair of wins on their home court. On Tuesday, Feb. 7 they hosted Moscow and avenged an earlier loss by a score of 72-60. On Thursday, Feb. 9, on Senior Night, they blew out Division 2 co-champion Kendrick by a score of 71-30.

It looked like that might be the case in the first half this time as Prairie fell behind the Bears 2-9 to open the game.
The 3-ball helped Prairie get back in the game as Brandon Anderson sank one at the 3:17 mark to cut the lead to 5-9. After a Moscow free throw Hunter Chaffee sank a pair of 3-pointers to give Prairie their first lead at 11-10 with 2:21 left in the quarter. 
Patrick Chmelik then put back his own miss to make it 13-10. After another Moscow free throw Chaffee hit Lucas Wemhoff, who was sprinting through the lane, for a lay-up that made it 15-11. Moscow hit a pair of free throws to make it 15-13 after one quarter.
In the second quarter Moscow took back the lead when Glen Gosse sank a pair of 3-pointers to make it 19-21. 
Prairie tied it at 21 on a hook shot in the lane by Chmelik but Moscow took the lead back at the 3:55 mark at 21-23. In the meantime Gosse picked up his third foul as did Tyson Schlader for Prairie. Both sat out the rest of the half.
Prairie tied it on a pair of free throws by Gavin Branson and took the lead on a basket by Chmelik. That kicked off a 12-1 run to end the half. Spencer Schumacher scored Prairie’s final 8 points of the half. He wound up scoring 12 in the quarter as he was 5 for 5 from the field and 2 for 2 at the line.
Prairie led 33-24 at the half.
Chaffee and Branson opened the second half with a 3-pointer each but Moscow then took over as they made a 2-15 run to cut the Prairie lead to just 2 points at 41-39.
Moscow was able to get within 1 at 45-44 but Chmelik made a pair of free throws that allowed Prairie to take a 47-45 lead into the fourth quarter.
Moscow made a 3-pointer to take their final lead early in the fourth quarter but Prairie then went on a 13-1 run to take control.
Chmelik scored 5 of those points with Wemhoff, Schlader, Branson and Schumacher each adding 2 as Prairie took a 60-49 lead with 3:20 left.
Prairie struggled to make free throws down the stretch but made enough of them to hold off the Bears as they were given plenty of opportunities. Prairie attempts 19 free throws in the fourth quarter alone, making 9 of them.
Moscow was able to get no closer thant 7 points at 67-60 in the final 3 minutes.
Chmelik wound up with 20 points to lead the scoring and added 14 rebounds to lead the team in that category a swell.
Schumacher scored 16, going 7 for 8 from the field and 2 for 2 from the line. He scored nearly all of his baskets on the low block, using the glass for lay-ins.
Chaffee and Schlader were also in double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively. Branson added 8, Wemhoff 4 and Anderson 3.
Gosse led Moscow with 27 points which included four 3-pointers.
Prairie had a 32-22 advantage on the boards.
Branson led the team with 8 assists, 5 of them to Schumacher. Schlader and Chaffee added 4 assists each. Wemhoff had 2 steals.
Prairie was 25 for 46 from the field, 54%, and 14 for 27 at the line, 52%. Moscow was 20 for 41 from the field, 49%, and 13 for 20 at the line, 65%.
Prairie’s JV team lost a close game 35-40. The C team also lost, no score available.

Vs. Kendrick
Prior to their final home game of the season, seniors Schlader, Chmelik, Branson, Wemhoff, Anderson, Todd Ott and Grant Gehring were all honored.
Once the game started Prairie took apart a good Kendrick team that finished tied for first in the White Pine League Division 2 standings at 9-1 and was 15-4 coming into the game.
Prairie jumped out to a 16-8 lead by the end of the first quarter and led 39-17 at the half.
They continued to pull away in the second half leading 55-26 after 3 quarters and outscoring the Tigers 16-4 in a fourth quarter run mostly under a running clock.
The Pirate defense shut down nearly everyone but 6’7” post Wyatt Hardin. Hardin had half of Kendrick’s 30 points with nobody else scoring more than 5.
Meanwhile Hunter Chaffee sank four 3-pointers and had 18 points while Schumacher had 16 points and 6 rebounds and Chmelik had 14 points and 7 rebounds. Schlader scored 5 points and led the team in rebounds with 8. Anderson added 5 points while Branson and Ott each scored 4. 
Prairie’s JV team ended their season on a good note as they won 56-24.
The Pirates were to open District play Tuesday, Feb. 14. If they won they would clinch and state berth and play in the District Champion game on Friday, Feb. 24. If they lost they would play on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7:30 against the Genesee-Troy loser.
Prairie finishes the regular season with a 16-4 record.
