Pirates win District on buzzer beater
Patrick Chmelik stole the ball under the Pirates basket and put it in as the buzzer sounded to give the Prairie Pirates a 50-49 win over Lapwai in the District Championship game Friday, Feb. 24 at the LCSC Activity Center in Lewiston.Hunter Chaffee didn’t get many open shots but when he did he made the most of them like on this 3-pointer.
The Wildcats helped give Prairie the chance by missing 3 of 4 free throws down the stretch.
Emmit Taylor, who wound up with 22 points for the Wildcats, missed the second of 2 free throws with 27 seconds left leaving Lapwai with a 1-possesion lead at 46-49.
Spencer Schumacher rebounded the missed second shot and got the ball to Gavin Branson who was fouled driving into the lane on the other end. Branson made both ends of the bonus to cut the deficit to 48-49 with 18 seconds left.
Ivory Miles-Williams was fouled on Lapwai’s ensuing possession and went to the line for a double-bonus situation with 10 seconds left. He missed both shots and Schumacher again rebounded the missed second shot. Prairie moved the ball downcourt and Tyson Schlader put up a shot with about 5 seconds left from just outside the free throw line. It just rimmed out and Miles-Williams grabbed the rebound. Chmelik then took the ball right out of Miles-Williams’ hands and put the ball in for the game-winner as the buzzer sounded and all the Prairie players and fans went crazy.
The final score was the only time Prairie led the entire game.
It was Prairie’s first win over Lapwai since the 2015 state championship game.
Lapwai scored first in the game but Prairie quickly tied it on a lay-up by Chmelik.
Lapwai took a 7-12 lead in the opening quarter after a 3-pointer by Taylor but Prairie answered with a 7-2 run as Chmelik scored inside again, Branson hit a 3-pointer and Schumacher tied it at 14 with a lay-up.
Taylor put Lapwai back on top though with a 3-pointer and a short jumper to make it 14-19 at the quarter break.
Lapwai took a 17-24 lead in the second quarter but Prairie got back within 2 on a 3-pointer by Hunter Chaffee and a basket inside by Schlader who made a great move to get an open look.
Lapwai again pushed the lead to 5 at 24-29 but Schumacher closed out the half with a buzzer beating 3-pointer from about 25 feet out to make it 27-29 at the half.
Brandon Anderson opened the second half scoring with a basket to tie the score but Prairie was just unable to grab a lead.
They tied it again at 32-32 when Lapwai got a 3-pointer each from Peyton Sobbota and Taylor for a 32-38 lead.
It was 34-40 at the end of the third quarter.
Schlader opened the fourth quarter scoring when he sank a shot as he was being fouled but missed the free throw.
After a Lapwai basket, Chmelik scored on a feed from Schlader.
At the other end Chaffee made a steal that led to a lay-up by Schumacher. With 4:09 left Prairie tied it again on a basket by Schlader who missed the chance to put Prairie when he couldn’t complete the 3-point play.
To that point Prairie had made just 2 of 9 free throws in the game.
Lapwai took back the lead on a driving lay-up by Miles-Williams. Chmelik tied it again with a putback of his own miss.
A basket by Sobotta and 2 free throws by Miles-Williams put Lapwai up 44-48 with 2:02 left to play.
With 1:34 left Branson was fouled and made both ends of the bones with 1:34 left to cut the lead to 46-48 setting up the final minute of action described earlier.
Prairie ran a patient, efficient offense in the game, working the ball around for a good shot that they made more often than not. They had some turnovers but made enough shots to keep the game close and give themselves the chance to win at the end.
There most efficient quarter was the second where they had 10 possessions. They turned the ball over 4 times but made 5 of 6 shots from the field on the other 6 possessions, including a pair of 3-pointers.
In the fourth quarter they were nearly as efficient with 13 possessions. They had just 2 turnovers and were 6 for 9 shooting the ball plus 4 of 6 at the line.
Chmelik wound up with a double double to lead the team with 15 points and 10 rebounds and 1 huge steal. Schlader had 9 points on 4 for 6 shooting and Schumacher scored 9 and was 4 for 4 from the field. Branson scored 7 and was 4 for 4 at the line. Chaffee sank a pair of 3’s for 6 points and Anderson scored 4.
Rebounding was very close with Lapwai holding a 22-23 edge.
Schlader had 8 assists and Branson had 5 as Prairie had 17 assists on 20 made baskets.
Schlader had 2 steals.
Prairie was 20 for 33 from the field, 61%, and 6 for 13 at the line, 46%. Lapwai was 16 for 39 from the field, 41%, and 8 for 14 at the line, 57%.
