Principal Nygaard to retire
At the February meeting of the school board Prairie Jr./Sr. High School principal Carrie Nygaard submitted a letter announcing her retirement from the position.
Board members commended her for all she has done for the district before accepting her retirement letter.
The amount for the override levy was discussed with Superintendent Rene’ Forsmann stating that it won’t be over $350,000. A motion was made and passed to seek that amount.
Prior to that discussion funds transfers were approved of $37,000 from the Federal Forest Fund and the last amount from the sale of the former Kindergarten-1st grade building to the general fund to help keep the levy amount where it’s at.
Three trustees are up for election this year. They are Pat Alfrey, Aaron Hinkelman and Tara Rowland.
An early graduation request by Calli Perrin was approved by the board.
Kyle Westhoff has resigned as baseball coach due to other obligations and the board approved elevating assistant coach David Shears to the head coaching job. Seth Guyer was then approved for hire as the new assistant coach.
In the facilities report Forsmann noted there were some roofing issues due to the weather. Insurance will cover most of them. Also Suzi Quintal’s room will get some new carpet and also some used cabinets from the BLM.
They did not get the grant that would’ve paid for new track equipment.
Section 5 of the Policy Manual was approved.
Review of Section 6 was postponed to next month.
In her principal’s report, Forsmann said she will advertise for a new second grade teacher. Numbers show there is a need. She has also started working on next year’s schedule.
She also reported they are having some issues with people being in the building after hours and not watching their children. She presented a letter to the women’s volleyball teams regarding concerns and it appears to have been handled.
In her superintendent’s report she reported she will be advertising the principal position at the jr./sr. high.
She is also working on another approach to finding a solution for the old Elementary building. Either selling or finding an occupant(s). There will be an upcoming public meeting regarding what the building could be repurposed for.
Bus bids are in and after discussion with David Shears, the low bid from Western Bus Sales was accepted.
She reported she attended a meeting put on by the Idaho County Democrats to discuss school issues.
She is working through the teacher evaluations.
She also reported the cross country team is asking to use a bus. They have a driver, just requesting a bus for approximately 5 trips plus a state meet in Boise.
Nygaard reported the girls basketball team was named academic champions and finished 2nd on the court.
Mr. Chapman will be taking students on an art field trip.
Jr. High volleyball tournament was to be held Feb. 25.
8th graders will be taking the NAEP test on March 7.
The FFA will be holding their annual banquet soon.
Plans are underway for the Spring Showcase set for Tuesday, March 28 in conjunction with parent/teacher conferences, which will also be held on the 29th.
Spring Break is March 31-April 9.
The board adjourned to an executive session at 6:55 p.m. The next regular meeting will be Monday, March 20 at 5:30 p.m.
