Pirates take second at State
The Prairie Pirates took second at the State 1-A, Division 1 basketball tournament held March 2-4 in southern Idaho.
On Thursday, March 2 at Vallivue High School in Caldwell they beat Wilder 69-25. On Friday, March 3, also at Vallivue they knocked off Valley 44-32. Finally on Saturday, March 4 at the Idaho Center in Nampa they fell to Lapwai 49-57 in the state championship game.Tyson Schlader blocks the shot of a Wilder player at State.
Vs. Wilder
Prairie was expecting to play Genesee in their opening round game after knocking off Lapwai in the district championship game but Wilder edged out the Bulldogs in a play-in game. Wilder then started out against Prairie like they were going to pull another upset as they jumped out to a 0-6 lead.
Patrick Chmelik got the Pirates on the board with a putback at the 5:13 mark of the opening quarter and added another a minute later. Hunter Chaffee tied it on a feed from Gavin Branson at the 3:51 mark. 
Chmelik scored inside with an assist from Tyson Schlader a minute later to give Prairie their first lead.
Prairie wound up scoring 15 straight points to take a 15-6 lead by the end of the quarter.
Two baskets by Schlader and a lay-up by Brandon Anderson made it 21 straight points and a 21-6 lead by the 5:27 mark of the second quarter.
Wilder finally broke the run with a 3-pointer. After a basket by each team made it 23-11, Chmelik scored on an alley-oop pass from Branson to kick off a 14-0 run that ended the half with Prairie up 37-11.
Prairie had outscored Wilder 37-5 after falling behind 0-6.
In the second half Wilder tried, unsuccessfully, to shoot their way back into the game from 3-point range as they wound up connecting on just 2 of 12 attempts from long range and 7 of 32 overall.
Prairie meanwhile just kept pulling away as they converted 6 of 10 in the third quarter and 8 of 13 in the fourth.
Chaffee and Chmelik wound up with 18 points each to lead the team in scoring. Anderson added 11 points with Schlader scoring 9, Spencer Schumacher 4, Devin Ross 3 and Lucas Wemhoff, Dylan Schumacher and Derik Shears 2 each.
Schlader had 13 rebounds to lead Prairie to a 54-19 domination of the boards over the smaller Wildcats.
Branson had a great game at the point with 15 assists while Schlader and Spencer Schumacher each had 2 steals. Schlader and Chmelik each had 3 blocked shots.
Prairie was 31 for 59 from the field, 53% and 1 for 3 at the line, 33%. Wilder was 12 for 56 from the field, 21%, and 0 for 2 at the line. There were just 10 total fouls called in the game, 6 on Prairie and 4 on Wilder.

Vs. Valley
The second round game against Valley was a lot tougher than their first round game.
PHunter Chaffee shoots 1 of 5 3-pointers against Valley. With 11 3-pointers at the state tournament he had 63 on the season which has to be a new school record.rairie took a 5-3 lead on a basket by Anderson and a 3-pointer by Chaffee but the Vikings came back to take a 5-10 lead.
A free throw by Spencer Schumacher and 2 free throws by Branson cut the lead to 8-10 by the end of the first quarter.
Valley’s Ben Christensen sank his second 3-pointer of the game to open the second quarter but Prairie responded with a basket inside by Schlader, a 3 from Chaffee and 2 free throws by Branson to take a 15-13 lead.
Christensen hit another 3 to give Valley back the lead but Spencer Schumacher answered with a basket to give Prairie back the lead.
Two free throws by Valley were answered by a 3 from Chaffee. Valley then scored 2 more free throws to tie it at 20-20 at the half.
Schlader came out strong in the third quarter scoring Prairie’s first 2 baskets for a 24-20 lead.
Valley answered with a basket but Schlader responded with a 3-point play to make it 27-22.
Valley cut the lead to 3 then Chaffee got the ball on the wing and for whatever reason the 2 Valley defenders close to him sagged back toward the lane giving Chaffee a wide open 3-pointer. 
Chaffee then stole the ball which led to a fast break lay-up by Chmelik.
After a Valley putback Branson hit a pair of free throws and Chaffee sank his 5th 3-pointer of the game to make it 37-26 after 3 quarters.
Valley twice got within 9 in the fourth quarter but Prairie responded each time as they worked the ball around until getting fouled and then converted at the line.
Chaffee wound up with 15 points, all on 3’s, to lead the team in scoring. Branson added 11 with 9 of those coming at the line in 10 attempts. Schlader scored 9, Spencer Schumacher scored 5 and Chmelik and Anderson added 2 each.
Chmelik pulled down 14 rebounds to lead Prairie to a 30-28 edge on the boards.
Branson had 7 assists and Chaffee had Prairie’s only steal.
Prairie was 13 for 29 from the field, 45%, and 13 for 20 at the line, 65%. Valley was 11 for 49 from the field, 22%, and 6 for 7 at the line, 86%.
Of note, Christensen, who was 3 for 4 from 3-point range in the first half was 0 for 7 in the second. As a team Valley was 5 for 27 in the second half, 0 for 10 from 3-point range.

Vs. Lapwai
Two regular visitors lately to the state championship game met Saturday at the Idaho Center. Prairie was playing in their third title game in 4 years and Lapwai in their third straight. Prairie won their two previous appearances while Lapwai lost each of the past two years, including the 2015 game against Prairie.
The Wildcats came out strong in this game jumping to a 0-7 lead.
Prairie was able to gather themselves though and got back within 2 at 6-8 on a pair of baskets by Chaffee and a turn-around shot in the lanBrandon Anderson drives past Lapwai’s Cameron Shawl in the championship game.e by Schlader.
A 3-by Peyton Sobotta made it a 5-point margin but Schlader cut it back to 3 with another turn-around shot in the lane that made it 8-11 at the quarter break.
Prairie twice got within 3 in the second quarter at 13-15 on a 3-point play by Spencer Schumacher and 16-18 on a 3-pointer by Chaffee.
At that point Lapwai put together a 0-10 run to take a 16-28 lead. Prairie was able to get back within 9 by halftime on a basket by Anderson, a 3 from Chaffee and a 15 foot jumper by Spencer Schumacher that made it 23-32 at the half.
Prairie opened the third quarter with an 8-3 run that got them back within 4 at 31-35. 
Chaffee and Chmelik each scored a basket to get within 5. After an Emmitt Taylor 3, Chmelik scored on an inbounds play and Spencer Schumacher scored 2 free throws to get within 4. That run was helped by Ivory Miles-Williams injuring a finger and leaving the game for most of the third quarter.
The two teams traded baskets with Branson sinking a 3 to answered a Kendall Leighton 3 and make it 36-40.
Another 3 by Taylor and 2 free throws by Sobotta pushed the lead to 9 at 36-45. Chmelik scored on a tip-in at the buzzer to make it 38-45 after 3 quarters.
Five times in the fourth quarter Prairie was able to get within 4 points but couldn’t get any closer.
Chmelik got them back within 4 early when he was fouled on another tip-in and converted the 3-point play.
Lapwai answered with a pair of free throws by Cameron Shawl.
Chmelik scored a pair of free throws with 5:46 left to cut the deficit to 43-47.
Miles-Williams was fouled and missed the 1 and 1 chance but Prairie couldn’t capitalize when they turned the ball over leading to 2 free throws by Sobotta as Chmelik fouled out of the game.
Branson answered with a driving lay-up to cut the lead to 45-49 with 2:15 left.
Miles-Williams was fouled again and this time made both free throws.
Schlader scored on an inbounds play to get within 4 again at 47-51 with 1:02 left.
A Miles-Williams lay-up was answered by a Schlader putback to make it 49-53 with 42 seconds left.
Lapwai then sank 4 of 6 free throws for the final scoring of the game.
Prairie had some chances to cut further into the lead but untimely turnovers and missed shots hurt.
Chmelik scored 13 and had 14 rebounds to lead Prairie in both categories. Chaffee added 12 points with Spencer Schumacher scoring 9, Schlader 8, Branson 5 and Anderson 2.
Sobotta led Lapwai with 15 points with Taylor and Miles-Williams each scoring 13.
Prairie had a 30-23 edge on the boards.
Branson had 5 assists while Schlader and Spencer Schumacher each had 3. Chaffee, Schumacher, Branson and Anderson each had 1 steal.
The Pirates were 20 for 48 from the field, 42%, and a perfect 6 for 6 at the line. Lapwai was 18 for 40 from the field, 45%, and 15 for 20 at the line, 75%. 13 of those 20 free throw attempts were in the fourth quarter when Prairie was fouling to try and come from behind. Lapwai made 10 of those 13 attempts.
Prairie ends the season with a 20-5 record.
