Pirates rally to beat C.V.
Prairie managed to get just 1 game played this past week due to weather conditions and umpire availability.
The game against C.V. was moved from Cottonwood to Kooskia and from Thursday to Wednesday due to weather forecasts and field conditions. Prairie going to play Nezperce at Kamiah prior to that but they couldn’t get umpires. The Nezperce game was rescheduled until Friday at Cottonwood but an afternoon rain shower cancelled that.
Prairie dug themselves an early hole as starting pitcher Owen Anderson fought command problems walking 3 batters and hitting another. An error behind him didn’t help either. Add in a 2-run double and a run scoring single and it meant the Rams had 4 runs on the board. C.V. had the bases loaded with just one out when the #9 hitter hit a short fly ball toward first base that Dereck Arnzen caught and then stepped on first for a double play to end the inning.
Prairie got 2 of those back in the bottom of the inning. Sam Mager was hit by a pitch leading off and Jace Perrin reached on a 1 out error. A groundout to second by Spencer Schumacher scored Mager and with 2 outs Arnzen crushed a double to the gap in right center that scored Perrin and made it 2-4.
Arnzen then took over on the mound in the second inning and promptly hit the leadoff batter with his first pitch.  That runner was erased when shortstop Brandon Anderson made a great diving catch in short left field and then got up and doubled off the runner at first as the baserunner made it all the way to second before the catch. After a walk, Arnzen got out of the inning when Luke Schwartz made a great running catch in deep left field.
Prairie went out in order in their half of the second but Arnzen came back to strike out the side in the third.
Prairie got within a run in the bottom of the third when Brandon Anderson doubled to the gap in left. He stole third and then scored on Perrin’s single to left.
Arnzen walked the leadoff batter in the fourth but 2 strikeouts and a fly ball to second got him out of the inning.
Prairie was unable to score in the fourth or the fifth.
In the top of the fifth Arnzen gave up a walk and then an error led to runners on first and third with no one out. Schumacher then came on to pitch and just absolutely dominated the Rams hitters. He struck out the next 3 hitters on 12 total pitches to get out of the inning with no runs scored.
He struck out the side on just 10 pitches in the sixth.
The bottom of the sixth started with a strikeout then Arnzen drew a walk. After another strikeout Owen Anderson lofted a fly ball to no-man’s land behind first base and wound up with a double with Arnzen advancing to third. Luke Schwartz worked a walk to load the bases. Damian Forsmann was then walked on 4 pitches to bring home Arnzen with the tying run. C.V. changed pitchers and Sam Mager was walked on 5 pitches to scored Owen Anderson and put the Pirates up 5-4.
In the top of the seventh Schumacher continued his dominance by striking out the side again to give Prairie the win. Schumacher struck out all 9 hitters he faced.
Arnzen turned the momentum Prairie’s way by giving up no runs or hits in 3 plus innings with 3 walks and 1 hit batsman.
Owen Anderson gave up 4 runs on 2 hits with 3 walks and 1 hit batsman.
Prairie had 4 hits, 3 of them doubles. Arnzen, Brandon Anderson and Owen Anderson each had a double and Perrin had a single. Mager, Perrin, Schumacher, Arnzen and Forsmann each had an RBI.
Prairie is now 3-3 in league play and 4-5 overall.
