Vs. Nezperce
Monday at Cottonwood, Prairie and Nezperce finally were able to play their often-rescheduled second game against each other and Prairie pulled out a win with a run in the bottom of the seventh in cold, drizzly conditions.
Nezperce had their best pitcher take the mound and Prairie wasn’t able to do much against him. Fortunately Prairie’s assortment of pitchers were also able to hold down the score on the other side.
Brandon Anderson pitched the first two innings for Prairie and gave up just 1 hit with 5 strikeouts.
Prairie took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Brandon Anderson led off the inning with a single to left. He stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. He scored on Arnzen’s single to the gap in right center.
Arnzen took over on the mound in the third inning  and got into and out of trouble. In the fourth he gave up a leadoff infield single and then got an out. He was then pulled in favor of Luke Schwartz. Both Anderson and Arnzen’s short stays on the mound were so they would be able to pitch again if needed in Tuesday’s doubleheader against Kendrick.
Schwartz struck out the first batter he faced then gave up a single that scored the tying run. He then got another strikeout to end the inning.
In the fifth Schwartz ran into control trouble and walked the bases loaded. A sacrifice fly scored the go-ahead run but a pickoff play got Prairie out of the inning with no further damage. The pickoff went for the runner on first but they wound up getting the runner who then took off from second for third base.
In the bottom of the sixth Prairie put a rally together to tie the score. Nick Mager hit a 1-out double to the fence in right center. Brandon Anderson was intentionally walked. Carson Forsman laid down a sacrifice but to move up both runners. Dereck Arnzen then hit a grounder to short that was bobbled for an error allowing the Mager to score and Arnzen to reach first base safely. Nezperce then pulled their starter to set up a lefty-lefty matchup and got out of the inning with a strikeout.
Schwartz walked the leadoff hitter in the seventh and was then pulled in favor of Sam Mager. Mager had started the game at catcher but got injured early on. He got a forceout at second then a strikeout. Nezperce’s #3 hitter was then walked intentionally and Mager got out of the inning with a strikeout, leaving the go-ahead runner stranded at third.
In the bottom of the inning Owen Anderson led off and drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch. Schwartz executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Owen to second. An errant pickoff throw by the pitcher sent him to third. Jake Stubbers then hit a hard grounder to second and beat it out for an infield hit as Owen scored the game-winning run.
Prairie had 5 hits in the game. Stubbers had 2 singles with neither getting out of the infield as his earlier hit was a bunt single. Nick Mager had a double and Brandon Anderson and Arnzen each had a single. Anderson and Stubbers each had an RBI.
Brandon Anderson gave up 0 runs and 1 hit with 5 strikeouts in 2 innings. Arnzen gave up 1 run on 1 hit with 2 walks and a hit batsman in 1 inning. Schwartz gave up 1 run on 1 hit with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts in 3 innings. Finally Sam Mager gave up no runs and no hits with 1 intentional walk and 2 strikeouts in 1 inning.
Prairie is now 7-7 on the season and 6-5 in league play.
